Book excerpt: The inside story from one of our true music legends - pianist, teacher, arranger and bandleader, Doug Caldwell MNZM. In My Life In The Key Of Jazz, Doug provides a fascinating and entertaining journey through the world he knows so well - a place of high-browed auditoriums, and low and smoky late-night jazz clubs, a world of eccentric punters, fans and the musicians who made it their own. Through more than 65 years of professional performance Doug has worked with a veritable who's who of acclaimed musicians and entertainers including: Henry Mancini, Mavis Rivers, Wild Bill Davison, Ronnie Scott, Sir Harry Secombe, Georgie Fame, Al Cohn, Cal Collins, Scott Hamilton and Don Rader, together with a wealth of New Zealand greats. Whether from the concert stage and piano bar or through his compositions and arangements on radio and television, Doug has left a formidable legacy. One of the few jazzmen of his generation still standing, still performing, still able to tell the tales - tall and true.

Book excerpt: Global Jazz: A Research and Information Guide is an annotated bibliography that explores the global impact of jazz, detailing the evolution of the African American musical tradition as it has been absorbed, transformed, and expanded across the world’s historical, political, and social landscapes. With more than 1,300 annotated entries, this vast compilation covers a broad range of subjects, people, and geographic regions as they relate to interdisciplinary research in jazz studies. The result is a vivid demonstration of how cultures from every corner of the globe have situated jazz—often regarded as America’s classical music—within and beyond their own musical traditions, creating new artistic forms in the process. Global Jazz: A Research and Information Guide presents jazz as a common musical language in a global landscape of diverse artistic expression.

Book excerpt: Bringing to life the musical worlds of New Zealanders both at home and out on the town, this history chronicles the evolution of popular music in New Zealand during the 20th century. From the kiwi concert parties during World War I and the arrival of jazz to the rise of swing, country, the Hawaiian sound, and then rock'n'roll, this musical investigation brings to life the people, places, and sounds of a world that has disappeared and uncovers how music from the rest of the world was shaped by Maori and Pakeha New Zealanders into a melody, rhythm, and voice that made sense on these islands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jazz Thornton first attempted to take her own life at the age of 12. Multiple attempts followed and she spent time in psychiatric wards and under medical supervision as she rode the rollercoaster of depression and anxiety through her teenage years - yet the attempts continued. Find out what Jazz learned about how her negative thought patterns came to be, and how she turned those thoughts - and her life - around. Who and what helped, and what didn't help. The insights she gives will help create greater understanding of those grappling with mental illness, and those around them who desperately want to help. Jazz went on to attend film school, and to co-found Voices of Hope, a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping those with mental health issues and show them there is a way forward. She creates online content to provide hope and help. Her first video Dear Suicidal Me has had over 80 million views all around the world. She went on to create Jessica's Tree, a web series that follows the 24 hours between a friend, Jess, going missing and the discovery of her body. It provides insights into Jessica's struggles, to help people better understand those suffering from depression. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QFU_qg7Msk Jessica's Tree was viewed more than 230,000 times in the two months following its release in March 2019 and immediately began winning international recognition and awards. The process and the delicate decisions that had to be made to create Jessica's Tree have themselves been documented in a film about Jazz called The Girl on the Bridge, due for release early in 2020.

Book excerpt: Vibrant and compelling, this jazz biography plots the life of one of New Zealand’s greatest musicians: Mike Nock. From Nock’s childhood in Ngaruawahia and Nelson in the 1940s and his teenage adventures on the road with the Fabulous Flamingoes to his gigs with music legends—including John Handy, Yusef Lateef, and Dionne Warwick—and his founding of the pioneering fusion band the Fourth Way, this account not only tells the story of a volatile and creative man, but also highlights Nock’s stellar international career. Containing an analysis of the pianist's compositions and recordings as well as an accompanying DVD, this chronicle offers rich insights for musicians and fans alike.

Book excerpt: Jazz Diaspora: Music and Globalisation is about the international diaspora of jazz, well underway within a year of the first jazz recordings in 1917. This book studies the processes of the global jazz diaspora and its implications for jazz historiography in general, arguing for its relevance to the fields of sonic studies and cognitive theory. Until the late twentieth century, the historiography and analysis of jazz were centred on the US to the almost complete exclusion of any other region. The driving premise of this book is that jazz was not ‘invented’ and then exported: it was invented in the process of being disseminated. Jazz Diaspora is a sustained argument for an alternative historiography, based on a shift from a US-centric to a diasporic perspective on the music. The rationale is double-edged. It appears that most of the world’s jazz is experienced (performed and consumed) in diasporic sites – that is, outside its agreed geographical point of origin – and to ignore diasporic jazz is thus to ignore most jazz activity. It is also widely felt that the balance has shifted, as jazz in its homeland has become increasingly conservative. There has been an assumption that only the ‘authentic’ version of the music--as represented in its country of origin--was of aesthetic and historical interest in the jazz narrative; that the forms that emerged in other countries were simply rather pallid and enervated echoes of the ‘real thing’. This has been accompanied by challenges to the criterion of place- and race-based authenticity as a way of assessing the value of popular music forms in general. As the prototype for the globalisation of popular music, diasporic jazz provides a richly instructive template for the study of the history of modernity as played out musically.

Book excerpt: Jay Thomas looks back at his life playing jazz. From an early teenage jazz phenom in 60's Seattle, to musical and life adventures in New York, San Francisco, Japan, and back to Seattle, this book chronicles the ups and downs of a life without navigational control. Although sometimes precarious it also has a lot of humor and life. Active addiction isn't always pretty. Jay Thomas has a thousand stories, and they are the stuff of a jazz life, which he has lived to the fullest for over 55 years-sometimes for better, sometimes worse. The book explores his fall into addiction and the roadmap to his recovery, and how under these difficult situations Jay was still able to forge ahead musically. So, this is really a primer on how a working, recording, and teaching musician makes a living in jazz. For readers of this book, especially musicians, Jay talks about the music recording industry, high school jazz programs, cruise ship gigs, and jazz opportunities in Japan. All in all, an inspiring story of a musician who never lost his love for music. Jay appears on 100s of recordings and his relationship in these musical situations with the famous and the infamous are springboards for many of his stories. Of the famous; Machito, Slim Gaillard, Chet Baker, Herb Ellis, Billy Higgins, Cedar Walton, George Braith, Conti Condoli, Roy Hargrove, and Elvin Jones. Throw in Jay's involvement in the N.W. musical scene in the 6os and 70s, and include his 23-year membership in one of Japan's top jazz organizations and that adds another layer of interesting tales.

Book excerpt: Birmingham-born Tommy Adderley was a working-class lad who started singing in New Zealand in the late 1950s when he was still in the Merchant Navy. By the early 1970s he was one of the owners of Granpa's (entertainers' club) in Auckland. Overseas musicians considered him to be the main man in the parish and all the greats including Keith Richards and John Mayall visited the club when they were in town. Those were the halcyon days. After a well-publicized drug bust and nineteen months in jail, Tommy devoted all his waking hours to music: as a jazz singer, event organiser and promoter. He performed to the end, and died, in abject poverty in February 1993 less than twenty-four hours after his last performance. "A highly personal account of a thoroughly personable man. This work rightly acknowledges Tommy Adderley's broader contribution to the New Zealand entertainment industry.... Christine...provides angular glimpses into a life as filled with generosity as it was fraught with personal challenges." Richard Thorne, New Zealand Musician Magazine.
