Book Synopsis Social Influence, Power, and Multimodal Communication by : Isabella Poggi
Download or read book Social Influence, Power, and Multimodal Communication written by Isabella Poggi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Influence, Power, and Multimodal Communication reveals how democratic leaders and dictators exploit multimodal communication to convince or seduce their audiences, using words, voice, gesture, face, gaze, and posture to boast about their merits or insult and ridicule rivals. Poggi and D'Errico explore questions such as what is charisma, and how do we perceive it in a leader? And how do politicians display their dominance over opponents, or discredit them in TV debates and social media? Starting from a sociocognitive model of social interaction, observational studies reveal the rhetoric of words, hands, and faces, explaining how to see beyond their literal meanings, while experimental studies test their uses and persuasive effects. The authors affirm that multimodality helps others to influence us through displays of dominance, and by undermining our power through comments, insults, irony, ridicule, and parody. The devices of social influence and its multimodal management are illuminated, giving readers insight into how people influence others’ lives by using body language and verbal communication, either explicitly or in subtle but inexorable ways. This fascinating text is a superb resource for students of psychology, communication, pragmatics, and political sciences, as well as for school teachers, politicians, spin doctors, active citizenship workers, and anyone seeking to understand how communicative power is managed, both in politics and everyday social contexts.

Book Synopsis Digital Hampi: Preserving Indian Cultural Heritage by : Anupama Mallik
Download or read book Digital Hampi: Preserving Indian Cultural Heritage written by Anupama Mallik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book represents the culmination of a hugely successful heritage preservation project initiated by the Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology. It presents extensive research on the digital preservation of the history, mythology, art, architecture and culture of the world heritage site Hampi in Karnataka, the seat of the Vijayanagara dynasty in medieval India. Further, the book introduces readers to a range of techniques developed by Indian technical research groups for digitally preserving both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the region. These techniques are sufficiently generic to be applied in heritage preservation efforts for other historical sites around the world as well. Technological advances have made it possible to not only create digital archives of these heritage artifacts, but to also share these resources for people to view, explore, experience, and analyze. This book showcases how cutting-edge technology can be combined with cultural and historical research to digitize and preserve heritage. It is the consolidation of work conducted under the Indian Digital Heritage project, a unique initiative of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. The project involved collaboration between researchers in the areas of Technology, Computer Science, Architecture and the Humanities for the digital documentation and interpretation of India’s tangible and intangible heritage. It highlights the art, architecture, and cultural legacy of the world heritage site of Hampi in Karnataka, the medieval capital of the 14th-16th century Vijayanagara dynasty. The contributors to this book are scientists and technology experts from prominent academic institutes in India such as the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), NIIT, and NID (National Institute of Design) working in collaboration with some of India’s top architects, art historians, anthropologists, heritage groups and multi-disciplinary cultural institutions such as the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS). Their papers will introduce readers to cutting-edge technologies from research areas such as computer vision, 3D modeling and artificial intelligence as they are employed to preserve art and culture in the digital domain. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 details efforts and techniques for modeling and representing the tangible heritage of Hampi, such as the reconstruction of damaged structures, realistic walk-throughs, and haptic rendering. Part 2 includes chapters detailing the analysis and digital restoration of artifacts such as mural paintings, inscriptions and sculptures, as well as mobile-based visual search for artifacts. Part 3 includes chapters on conjectural re-constructions of the architectural life, social life and traditions of Hampi. Lastly, Part 4 addresses the knowledge-based archiving and exploration of cultural heritage.
Book Synopsis Digital Heritage Reconstruction Using Super-resolution and Inpainting by : Milind G. Padalkar
Download or read book Digital Heritage Reconstruction Using Super-resolution and Inpainting written by Milind G. Padalkar and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage sites across the world have witnessed a number of natural calamities, sabotage and damage from visitors, resulting in their present ruined condition. Many sites are now restricted to reduce the risk of further damage. Yet these masterpieces are significant cultural icons and critical markers of past civilizations that future generations need to see. A digitally reconstructed heritage site could diminish further harm by using immersive navigation or walkthrough systems for virtual environments. An exciting key element for the viewer is observing fine details of the historic work and viewing monuments in their undamaged form. This book presents image super-resolution methods and techniques for automatically detecting and inpainting damaged regions in heritage monuments, in order to provide an enhanced visual experience. The book presents techniques to obtain higher resolution photographs of the digitally reconstructed monuments, and the resulting images can serve as input to immersive walkthrough systems. It begins with the discussion of two novel techniques for image super-resolution and an approach for inpainting a user-supplied region in the given image, followed by a technique to simultaneously perform super-resolution and inpainting of given missing regions. It then introduces a method for automatically detecting and repairing the damage to dominant facial regions in statues, followed by a few approaches for automatic crack repair in images of heritage scenes. This book is a giant step toward ensuring that the iconic sites of our past are always available, and will never be truly lost.

In this book, we consider the most significant and emergent research topics in this domain, addressing major issues and challenges in IoT-based solutions proposed for the smart grid. The chapters provide insight on comprehensive topics in IoT-based smart grids, combining technical aspects with the most up-to-date theory. It investigates the grid under varying and potential emerging paradigms such as edge/fog computing, in addition to big data aspects considerations in the IoT era. With comprehensive surveys and case studies, this book explores basic and high-level grid aspects in the emerging smart city paradigm, which makes it especially attractive to researchers, academics, and higher-level students. This authored book can be used by computer science undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners, city administrators, policymakers, and government regulators.
Book Synopsis Artificial Intelligence in Data and Big Data Processing by : Ngoc Hoang Thanh Dang
Download or read book Artificial Intelligence in Data and Big Data Processing written by Ngoc Hoang Thanh Dang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents studies related to artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications to process and analyze data and big data to create machines or software that can better understand business behavior, industry activities, and human health. The studies were presented at “The 2021 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Digital Era” (ICABDE 2021), which was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, during December 18-19, 2021. The studies are pointing toward the famous slogan in technology “Make everything smarter,” i.e., creating machines that can understand and can communicate with humans, and they must act like humans in different aspects such as vision, communication, thinking, feeling, and acting. “A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing that it was human” —Alan Turing
