Book excerpt: Explores ancient beliefs about life after death, highlighting the fact that the early Christians' belief about the afterlife belonged firmly on the Jewish spectrum, while introducing several new mutations and sharper definitions, forcing readers to view the Easter narratives not simply as rationalizations, but as accounts of two actual events: the empty tomb of Jesus and his "appearances." This led me to fail to use many a good book’s contents, for fear that some of my members should have a copy of it. This book and its contents can be freely drawn upon without any such fear. The articles in this book have, most of them, been out of print for half a century. There are only a few of this generation that have ever seen them. Besides, they are not private property, but the legacy of us all.” —From To the Recipient by Z. T. Sweeney

Book excerpt: For the church fathers the Gospels did not serve as resources for individual analysis and academic study. They were read and heard and interpreted within the worshiping community. Among such sermons on Luke that have survived, this ACCS volume includes selections from Origen and Cyril of Alexandria as well as church fathers who addressed exegetical issues in theological treatises, pastoral letters, and catechetical lectures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of these thirty-one essays by Richard Bauckham, a well-known New Testament scholar, were first published between 1979 and 2015 in journals and multi-authored volumes. Two are previously unpublished and one has not been published in English before. They range widely over early Christianity and early Christian literature in both the New Testament period and the early patristic period, reflecting the author's conviction that the historical study of early Christianity should not isolate the New Testament literature from other early Christian sources, such as the apostolic fathers and the Christian apocryphal literature. Some of the essays develop further the themes of the author's books on aspects of the Gospels, such as the intended audiences of the Gospels, the way in which Gospel traditions were transmitted, the role of the eyewitnesses in the origins of the Gospels, the importance of Papias's evidence about Gospel traditions, and the relationship between canonical and Gnostic Gospels. Some of the essays relate to important persons, such as Peter, Barnabas, Paul and James. These include a full investigation of the evidence for the martyrdom of Peter and an attempt to locate the estate of Publius where Paul stayed on Malta. There are studies of the Sabbath and the Lord's Day in both the New Testament and patristic periods. There are studies that survey most of the main categories of apocryphal Christian literature, including apocryphal Gospels and Acts, and with a special focus on the non-canonical apocalypses, such as the Apocalypse of Peter and the Latin Vision of Ezra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B. J. Oropeza offers the most thorough examination in recent times on the subject of apostasy in the New Testament. The study examines each book of the New Testament with a fourfold approach that identifies the emerging Christian community in danger, the nature of apostasy that threatens the congregations, and the consequences of defection. Oropeza then compares the various perspectives of the communities in Christ in order to determine the ways in which they perceived apostasy and whether defectors could be restored. In this second volume of a three-volume set titled Apostasy in the New Testament Communities, Oropeza focuses on the Christ communities of the undisputed and disputed Pauline Letters.

During the latter days of his life he organized and incorporated the New Testament Christianity Book Fund as a means of carrying on the work he had undertaken, and other volumes will be issued as planned by Mr. Sweeney. The first volume was given a most cordial reception, and the interest so enthusiastically expressed by recipients was a great inspiration, not only to Mr. Sweeney, but to his associates in the Book Fund.” —From the Foreword by Mrs. Z. Book excerpt: This survey textbook by two respected New Testament scholars is designed to meet the needs of contemporary evangelical undergraduates. The book effectively covers the New Testament books and major topics in the New Testament, assuming no prior academic study of the Bible. The authors pay attention to how the New Testament documents fit together as a canonical whole that supplements the Old Testament to make up the Christian Scriptures. They also show how the New Testament writings provide basic material for Christian doctrine, spirituality, and engagement with culture. Chapters can be assigned in any order, making this an ideal textbook for one-semester courses at evangelical schools. This is the first volume in a new series of survey textbooks that will cover the Old and New Testaments. The book features full-color illustrations that hold interest and aid learning and offers a full array of pedagogical aids: photographs, sidebars, maps, time lines, charts, glossary, and discussion questions. Additional resources for instructors and students are available through Textbook eSources.

Book excerpt: The English translation of the three-volume Exegetisches Wrterbuch zum Neuen Testament, this monumental work by an ecumenical group of scholars is first of all a complete English dictionary of New Testament Greek. Going beyond that, however EDNT also serves as a guide to the usage of every New Testament word in its various contexts, and it makes a significant contribution to New Testament exegesis and theology. EDNT's thorough, lengthy discussions of more significant words and its grouping of words related by root and meaning (with alphabetical cross-references) distinguish it from simpler Greek-English lexicons. Advancing the discussion of the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, EDNT summarizes more recent treatments of numerous questions in New Testament study and takes into consideration newer viewpoints of linguistics.

Book excerpt: WHO ARE YOU, CHRISTIAN? This question is as old as the New Covenant itself. From the moment Christ died, all of humanity was given the opportunity to know God in a way unlike ever before. Jesus' death sealed the deal, but when He came back to life, every person on the planet now had the chance of God making His home inside of them-permanently. By grace through faith in what Jesus did for our sins, we Christians get a brand new identity from the moment we first believe. No longer living by rules, wasteful efforts, or people-pleasing, we now live and breathe by way of a supernatural relationship with the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, religious hierarchies who extort Christians, our main enemy, Satan, and the power of sin, all want nothing more than for us to not know what the Cross has truly done. The spiritual identity of every believer has become heaven-ready! On the inside, we are currently brand new creations! Not when our physical bodies die, but right now, we are new! My name is Matt McMillen, and over the next thirty days I'll take you on a daily devotional adventure of discovering who you really are as a child of God. Christian, you will be amazed at what the Cross has done to your identity! Thanks for joining me! Let's go!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightful work, the author explores the fundamental Christian virtue of 'agape.' Spicq's genius is the way he combines fine linguistic analysis, exegesis, and theological insight. The three volumes cover most of the New Testament books: Volume 1: 'Agape in the Synoptic Gospels' Volume 2: 'Agape in the Epistles of St. Paul, the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles of St. James, St. Peter, and St. Jude' Volume 3: 'Agape in the Gospel, Epistles and Apocalypse of St. John' In the writings of St. John there is one aspect of 'agape' which is brought out in singular relief--the aspect of manifestation and proof. Most of St. John's uses of the word should be translated 'manifest love,' 'love which proves itself,' or 'the economy, the development of the divine love.' --from the Introduction
