Book excerpt: Most of the effort was devoted to a study of the weak interactions of long lived neutral kaons. One of the most fundamental experiments in elementary particle physics was completed by discovering the existence of a charge asymmetry in the muonic decay of the long lived neutral kaon. It resulted in the first prima-facie demonstration that there is a particular charge bias in nature. A large multiplate spark chamber and an exceedingly accurate timing system to determine the neutral kaon energy by the time of flight from the target. A new technique for rapid on-line handling of data was developed to compute all of the direction cosines of the spark chamber tracks while actually taking data. A first prototype module was constructed. It is a generalized data shifter and sorter with access to the outside through front panel connectors enabling transfer of blocks of information at high speed from one set of locations to another, either inside or outside of the system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, the first of what have come to be known as "strange particles" were detected. As the number and variety of these particles proliferated, physicists began to try to make sense of them. Some seemed to have masses about 900 times that of the electron, and existed in both charged and neutral varieties. These particles are now called kaons (or K mesons), and they have become the subject of some of the most exciting research in particle physics. Kaon Physics at the Turn of the Millennium presents cutting-edge papers by leading theorists and experimentalists that synthesize the current state of the field and suggest promising new directions for the future study of kaons. Topics covered include the history of kaon physics, direct CP violation in kaon decays, time reversal violation, CPT studies, theoretical aspects of kaon physics, rare kaon decays, hyperon physics, charm: CP violation and mixing, the physics of B mesons, and future opportunities for kaon physics in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: The neutral K meson or neutral kaon, K0, and its antiparticle, K(bar)0, form a remarkable quantum-mechanical two-state system that has played an important role in the history of elementary particle physics. Indeed, ever since the discovery of K0 half a century ago, neutral kaons have been a rich source of unique and facinating phenomena associated with their production, decay and propagation in both vacuum and matter. This overview conveys the unique beauty of a quantum-mechanical system that contains so many of the aspects of modern physics. WICHTIGE INFO: Satzanweisung!!! bitte setzen Sie bei K0 das Zeichen "0" als hochgestellte Null. K(bar) ersetzen Sie bitte, indem Sie über das K einen Querstrich setzen und das "(bar)" dann bitte löschen. Danke, jlenz(Tel. 307)

Book excerpt: Particle physics is the science that pursues the age-old quest for the innermost structure of matter and the fundamental interactions between its constituents. Modern experiments in this field rely increasingly on calorimetry, a detection techniques in which the particles of interest are absorbed in the detector. Calorimeters are very intricate instruments, their performance characteristics depend in subtle, sometimes counter-intuitive ways on design details. This book, written by one of the world's foremost experts, is the first comprehensive text on this topic. It provides a fundamental and systematic introduction, in which many intriguing calorimeter features are explained. It also describes the state of the art, both for what concerns the fundamental understanding of calorimetric particle detection and the actual detectors that have been or are being built and operated in experiments. In the last chapter, some landmark scientific discoveries in which calorimetry has played an important role are discussed. This book summarizes and puts into perspective work described in some 600 scientific papers, listed in the bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model of elementary particle physics was tentatively outlined in the early 1970s. The concepts of quarks, leptons, neutrinos, gauge symmetries, chiral interactions, Higgs boson, strong force, weak force, and electromagnetism were all put together to form a unifying theory of elementary particles. Furthermore, the model was developed within the context of relativistic quantum field theory, making it compatible with all of the laws of Einstein's Special Relativity. The successes of the Standard Model over the years have been tremendous and enduring, leading up to the recent discovery and continuing study of the Higgs boson. This book is a comprehensive and technical introduction to Standard Model physics. Martin and Wells provide readers who have no prior knowledge of quantum field theory or particle physics a firm foundation into the fundamentals of both. The emphasis is on obtaining practical knowledge of how to calculate cross-sections and decay rates. There is no better way to understand the necessary abstract knowledge and solidify its meaning than to learn how to apply it to the computation of observables that can be measured in a laboratory. Beginning graduate students, both experimental and theoretical, and advanced undergraduate students interested in particle physics, will find this to be an ideal one-semester textbook to begin their technical learning of elementary particle physics.
