Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This e-book will review special features of the cerebral circulation and how they contribute to the physiology of the brain. It describes structural and functional properties of the cerebral circulation that are unique to the brain, an organ with high metabolic demands and the need for tight water and ion homeostasis. Autoregulation is pronounced in the brain, with myogenic, metabolic and neurogenic mechanisms contributing to maintain relatively constant blood flow during both increases and decreases in pressure. In addition, unlike peripheral organs where the majority of vascular resistance resides in small arteries and arterioles, large extracranial and intracranial arteries contribute significantly to vascular resistance in the brain. The prominent role of large arteries in cerebrovascular resistance helps maintain blood flow and protect downstream vessels during changes in perfusion pressure. The cerebral endothelium is also unique in that its barrier properties are in some way more like epithelium than endothelium in the periphery. The cerebral endothelium, known as the blood-brain barrier, has specialized tight junctions that do not allow ions to pass freely and has very low hydraulic conductivity and transcellular transport. This special configuration modifies Starling's forces in the brain microcirculation such that ions retained in the vascular lumen oppose water movement due to hydrostatic pressure. Tight water regulation is necessary in the brain because it has limited capacity for expansion within the skull. Increased intracranial pressure due to vasogenic edema can cause severe neurologic complications and death.

Book excerpt: Neuroscientists from various disciplines have given extraordinary attention to the role of neurotransmitters in the field of neuronal injury. This volume summarizes the original oral and poster contributions which were presented at the symposium, "The Role of Neurotransmitters in Brain Injury," in Key West, Florida, between June 7-9, 1991. This symposium was the official Satellite of Brain-91, the Fifteenth International Symposium on Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, held in Miami the previous week. The two principal goals of the Key West satellite meeting were to document recent progress and, more importantly, to explore future directions for investigative studies of the role of neurotransmitters in brain injury. To achieve these goals we assembled participants from diverse scientific fields and specialties who brought their collective expertise to discussions on the importance of neurotransmitters in neuronal and vascular injury following brain ischemia, trauma, and epilepsy. Their contributions are reflected in this volume. An important section of this volume is devoted to the role of glutamate and glutamatergic receptors in the development of ischemic neuronal damage. Topics covered include the mechanisms of glutamate and other excitatory amino acids, and the role of underlying injury-induced release different glutamatergic receptors in brain injury, including the NMDA and the non-NMDA receptors. The involvement of other neurotransmitters in the process of ischemic brain injury is well established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook covers the entire subject of the regulation of cerebral blood flow, with special emphasis on neurogenic mechanisms, and relationships with physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. Both research and clinical aspects are covered. Established authorities in the field of cerebral circulation and metabolism, backed up by other internationally known neuroscientists, have prepared this in-depth text-book review of cerebral circulation and its control, together with the necessary background information in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, pharmacology and vascular physiology. Techniques of investigation of cerebral circulation and metabolism are dealt with in a comprehensive manner, allowing the reader to evaluate approaches to a particular research problem and to assess the reliability of published results. Particular emphasis is given to the role and effects of neurotransmitters and neural systems -- extrinsic and intrinsic -- in controlling cerebral blood flow, while two chapters deal with related clinical disorders. A carefully selected reference list allows further personal research by the interested reader. Eminently readable (number of text references limited), well illustrated, seriously documented and up-to-date. This is a suitable reference book for graduate level onwards, and should be of special interest to all those in or entering this field of research. It should be of interest to researchers in physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy, neuroscience, as well as clinicians, especially neurologists, neurosurgeons and nuclear medicine specialists of the brain.
