Book Synopsis Genetic Approaches in the Prevention of Mental Disorders by : Victor Bulyzhenkov
Download or read book Genetic Approaches in the Prevention of Mental Disorders written by Victor Bulyzhenkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least 40 million people in the worId suffer from the most severe forms of mental disorder such as schizophrenia and some 300 million more are affected by less severe but still incapacitating forms of these conditions, including, for example, drug and alcohol dependence and the consequences of brain trauma. The enor mous magnitude of human suffering and the economic losses usually linked of these disorders make them a problem of major public health importance. Recent years have brought with them scientific discoveries which have made it possible to successfully treat most mental disorders and to prevent many others. Some of them, however, cannot be prevented on the basis of today's knowledge, and their treatment remains palliative: further progress in their management awaits an improvement in our understanding of mechanisms by which they come into existence and of factors which influence their course. Recent years have also seen a significant increase in knowledge about genetic factors influencing the occurrence and course of a variety of diseases, for example, cystic fibrosis, Duchenne type muscular dystrophy, thalassemia, and hyperten sion. Some of this knowledge and some of the methods that have been developed to obtain it could have direct relevance to the search for a c1earer comprehension of the pathogenesis of mental disorder.

Book Synopsis Serotonin Receptors in Neurobiology by : Amitabha Chattopadhyay
Download or read book Serotonin Receptors in Neurobiology written by Amitabha Chattopadhyay and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-05-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of developments spanning a multitude of techniques makes this an exciting time for research in serotonin receptors. A comprehensive review of the subject from a multidisciplinary perspective, Serotonin Receptors in Neurobiology is among the first books to include information on serotonin receptor knockout studies. With contributions from leading experts in their fields, the book explores serotonin receptors from a broad-based, multidisciplinary approach. The approaches described vary from molecular biological techniques to fluorescence microscopy and imaging, to genetic manipulation in animal models, providing a wide range of tools to study serotonergic phenomena. While each of these approaches has its own advantages and limitations, the synthesis of information and knowledge achieved from studies using multiple approaches will result in a comprehensive understanding of the underlying complex phenomena involved in serotonergic signaling and its implications in health and disease. The book provides an overall understanding of these receptors based on currently used methodologies and techniques. It describes specific experimental procedures that will be of use to researchers interested in addressing similar problems involving other G-protein-coupled receptor signaling systems.

Download or read book Mind-Body written by Adrian Moulyn and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-03-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative work, Moulyn examines some of the most fundamental questions arising from human experience: Why do we feel and behave as if mind and body are separate entities? What is the actual relationship between them? Dissatisfied with the common philosophic view that categorically separates body and mind by placing one in space and the other in time, he proposes an objective and subjective timespace to explain mind-body interaction and create a basis for unity and inner harmony. Choosing a point at which body and mind intersect, the author focuses on the neuromuscular and psychological nature of movement and distinguishes between two kinds of movement: mechanical and purpose-striving. He places mechanical movement in objective timespace while purposeful movement, which is linked to mental activity, he assigns to subjective timespace. This schema is used to explore a range of physical/psychological phenomena, including the reasons for the human tendency to separate mind from body and time and space; the implications of human foreknowledge of death; the evolutionary development of body-mind interaction; mental processes; the concepts of self, ego, and soul; and the question of creativity. Providing a new perspective on a fundamental human dilemma, this work is relevant to studies and classes in neurophysiology, philosophy, humanism, and the philosophy of science.
