Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of Thomas Hathaway and His Family, Formerly of New Bedford, Massachusetts: With Incidents in the Life of Jemima Wilkinson Thomas hathaway, who emigrated to Western New York in 1790, was a native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, a son of Jonathan and Abigail Hathaway. He was born in the year 1732; other wise of his early history, no record is kept. Thomas being their oldest son, inherited by will the principal part of his father's large landed estate, as was the custom of that period. A few extracts from the curious will of the ancestor, Jonathan Hathaway, dated 1759, mav not be uninteresting as a comparison with the customs of the present day. He says, I give my soul to God, my body to the dust, and order that my funeral expenses shall be paid out of my live stock. I bequeath to my beloved wife Abigail, (at the time of his death-e was quite aged, ) as long as she remains my widow, the use of one half of the lower rooms of my own dwelling house, the use of the little pantry closet and the use of one half of What is called the big closet, the use of the two drawers in the big chest in the kitchen, the use of one third of the puter dishes, the wool from six sheep every year, half the apples of the orchard every year, and two pairs of stout leather shoes every year. It is to be understood that all this is for my wife Abigail as long as she remains my widow. I also Will, that my son Thomas shall live with and be clever to his mother, keep a horse and pillion, and see that his mother goes to meeting. The details of daily living, of the marrying, working, and dying of the neighbors and kin in the photo album from New Bedford, demonstrate the personal side of the development of this famous whaling capital through its transition to a strong mill economy. These details also show how the financial and intellectual capital of the city fueled development throughout the United States. This album with its very small cast of neighbors and kin thus unfolds to offer a glimpse of the rich panorama of nineteenth-century New Bedford. The biographical sketches of the onstage and offstage players combined with the histories presented (of New Bedford, of nineteenth-century social media, and of the album itself) reveal a snapshot of New Bedford’s citizens, New Bedford’s history and industries, and, importantly, New Bedford’s part in the Civil War. Frozen in Time presents local history in the broader context of the United States and can be seen as well as an example of petite histoire – an account of particular households and neighborhoods, reminding readers of the continuing importance of both family and neighborhoods, real or virtual. The discussion of nineteenth-century social media also shows those in the twenty-first century that Facebook can be seen as old social media on a new platform. The photographs from the time of the Civil War underscore the arc of photography from its first use capturing images of war to its present use to record violence perpetuated on and perpetuated by police and others at home and around the world. Lukesh was entrusted with the family album that is the basis for Frozen in Time and used her experience in research, artifact interpretation, and writing to develop the narrative of the book. She hopes readers will take away the importance and value of both family and history, as well as the part of the family in history.

Book excerpt: Amid political innovation and social transformation, Revolutionary America was also fertile ground for religious upheaval, as self-proclaimed visionaries and prophets established new religious sects throughout the emerging nation. Among the most influential and controversial of these figures was Jemima Wilkinson. Born in 1752 and raised in a Quaker household in Cumberland, Rhode Island, Wilkinson began her ministry dramatically in 1776 when, in the midst of an illness, she announced her own death and reincarnation as the Public Universal Friend, a heaven-sent prophet who was neither female nor male. In The Public Universal Friend, Paul B. Moyer tells the story of Wilkinson and her remarkable church, the Society of Universal Friends. Wilkinson’s message was a simple one: humankind stood on the brink of the Apocalypse, but salvation was available to all who accepted God’s grace and the authority of his prophet: the Public Universal Friend. Wilkinson preached widely in southern New England and Pennsylvania, attracted hundreds of devoted followers, formed them into a religious sect, and, by the late 1780s, had led her converts to the backcountry of the newly formed United States, where they established a religious community near present-day Penn Yan, New York. Even this remote spot did not provide a safe haven for Wilkinson and her followers as they awaited the Millennium. Disputes from within and without dogged the sect, and many disciples drifted away or turned against the Friend. After Wilkinson’s "second" and final death in 1819, the Society rapidly fell into decline and, by the mid-nineteenth century, ceased to exist. The prophet’s ministry spanned the American Revolution and shaped the nation’s religious landscape during the unquiet interlude between the first and second Great Awakenings. The life of the Public Universal Friend and the Friend’s church offer important insights about changes to religious life, gender, and society during this formative period. The Public Universal Friend is an elegantly written and comprehensive history of an important and too little known figure in the spiritual landscape of early America.
