Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many 19th and 20th century historians have argued that Northern slavery was mild and that master/slave relations were relatively harmonious. Yet, Northern slavery, like Southern, was characterized by the conflict between the masters' desire to control their slaves and the slaves' resistance to this domination. For a variety of political, social, and intellectual reasons, 19th and 20th century historians ignored this inherent conflict in discussions of Northern slavery. Fitts' research focuses on how and why historians sanitized the history of slavery in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and then shows the inadequacy of these interpretations by examining several of the planters' and slaves' conflicting strategies of control and resistance. Topics include how planters used physical punishment, legislation, and the threat of sale in an attempt to control their slaves, and how slaves resisted through violence, running away, and non-violent crime. Fitts also examines the plantation landscape as a site of symbolic contestation and includes a chapter on slave names. (Ph.D. dissertation, Brown University, 1995; revised with new preface)

If people had really thought him in earnest when he spoke ill of matrimony, that was their look-out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Narragansett Planters: A Study of Causes In the southern corner of Rhode Island there lived in the middle of the eighteenth century a race of large landowners who have been called the Narragansett Planters. Unlike the other New England aristocrats of their time these people derived their wealth from the soil and not from success in mercantile adventures. They formed a landed aristocracy which had all the peculiarities of a landed aristocracy to as great an extent as did that of the southern colonies. Nevertheless, these Narragansett magnates were not planters in the usual and commonly-accepted meaning of the word. It is true enough that they lived on large isolated farms surrounded by all the pomp and apparent prosperity that a horde of slaves could supply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first settlements within New England, the developing colonies of British North America became inextricably linked to slavery. The region supplied critical goods to the sugar plantations established by British planters in the West Indies. The northern colonies established their own slave plantations to supply the growing demand for goods that led to unparalleled growth in commerce and to the subsequent involvement in the triangle trade. As these northern plantations diminished at the close of the eighteenth century, the rise of textile manufacturing continued to tie the region to slavery. Historian Robert A. Geake explores the familial and economic ties that bound New England and the South into the Civil War.
