Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myths of the Odyssey in Art and Literature F OR English readers my book is in intention some what novel; it may be well therefore at the outset clearly to define its purport. By two voices the tales of Homer have been told us: to one of these we too often neglect to listen. Because the myths of Homer himself are told in words that are matchless, is it well that the story which art has left us should remain unread? The vase -painter and the gem engraver are indeed humbler artists than the great epic poet; sometimes they are mere craftsmen, and their work little beyond the rudest symbolic word painting; but they are Greeks, and they may help us to understand some what better the spirit of their mighty kinsman. We who are so far removed, by time, by place, by every condition of modern life, must refuse no aid whereby we may seek to draw the nearer: our eyes must learn to see as well as our ears to hearken. We read enough of the writings of scholiast and grammarian, who have striven in all ages to elucidate the text of Homer. Thereby we acquire, it is true.

Book Synopsis The Life and Work of Jane Ellen Harrison by : Annabel Robinson
Download or read book The Life and Work of Jane Ellen Harrison written by Annabel Robinson and published by Oxford : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rebel against Victorian mores, Jane Ellen Harrison (1850-1928) became one of the first women to hold a research fellowship at Cambridge. A friend of such distinguished figures as Gilbert Murray and Francis Cornford, she was renowned for her public lectures on Greek art, for her books on Greekreligion and mythology, and for her unconventional and outspoken views. In her application of anthropology to classical studies, Harrison stirred up controversy amongst her academic colleagues, while, at the same time, influencing many writers, including Yeats, D. H. Lawrence, and Virginia Woolf. Driven by the conviction that the study of primitive Greek culture was anintensely practical enterprise, addressing the fundamental emotional needs of all people, she set her academic research in the broader context of human life. Her work on Greek religion is really a critique of all religion.Although she was a powerful role model for academic women and addressed issues which were central to the women's movement, when it came to women's rights, her own views were not always in keeping with those of her suffragist contemporaries. Harrison wrote not to champion any cause, but out of apassionate desire to share what she believed to be important and true. In so doing, she both opened up new possibilities for academic women and made a considerable contribution to classical studies.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion by : Pooyan Tamimi Arab
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion written by Pooyan Tamimi Arab and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion places objects and bodies at the center of scholarly studies of religious life and practice. Propelling forward the study of material religion, the Handbook first reveals the deep philosophical roots of its key categories and then advances new critical analytics, such as queer materialities, inescapable material entanglements, and hyperobjects that explode the small-scale personal view on religions. The Handbook comprises thirty chapters, written by an international team of contributors who offer a global perspective of religious pasts and presents, divided into four thematic parts: Genealogies of Material Religion Materializing the Terms of the Study of Religion Entanglements, Entrapment, Escaping Hyperobjects, or How Ginormous Things Affect Religions In these four parts, the study of material religion is redirected towards systematic, critical interrogations of the imbrication of religious structures of power with racial, economic, political, and gendered forms of domination. From Spinoza’s political theology to African philosophies of ubuntu; from the queer materialities of Mesoamerican religion to the Satanic Temple of the United States; from Islamic love and sacrifice in human-animal entanglements to Shia militants’ attachment to weaponry; from epidemic cataclysm in Latin America to vast infrastructures and the gathering of millions in India’s Kumbh Mela, the study of material religion proves to be the study par excellence of the human condition. The Handbook is essential reading for students and researchers in religious studies, anthropology, history, and media studies, and will also be of interest to those in related fields such as archeology, sociology, and philosophy.
