Book excerpt: A Cyclops is popularly assumed to be nothing more than a flesh-eating, one-eyed monster. In an accessible, stylish, and academically authoritative investigation, this book seeks to demonstrate that there is far more to it than that - quite apart from the fact that in myths the Cyclopes are not always one-eyed! This book provides a detailed, innovative, and richly illustrated study of the myths relating to the Cyclopes from classical antiquity until the present day. The first part is organised thematically: after discussing various competing scholarly approaches to the myths, the authors analyse ancient accounts and images of the Cyclopes in relation to landscape, physique (especially eyes, monstrosity, and hairiness), lifestyle, gods, names, love, and song. While the man-eating Cyclops Polyphemus, famous already in the Odyssey, plays a major part, so also do the Cyclopes who did monumental building work, as well as those who toiled as blacksmiths. The second part of the book concentrates on the post-classical reception of the myths, including medieval allegory, Renaissance grottoes, poetry, drama, the visual arts, contemporary painting and sculpture, film, and even a circus performance. This book aims to explore not just the perennial appeal of the Cyclopes as fearsome monsters, but the depth and subtlety of their mythology which raises complex issues of thought and emotion.

Book excerpt: In his semiautobiographical novel, Cyclops, Croatian writer Ranko Marinkovic recounts the adventures of young theater critic Melkior Tresic, an archetypal antihero who decides to starve himself to avoid fighting in the front lines of World War II. As he wanders the streets of Zagreb in a near-hallucinatory state of paranoia and malnourishment, Melkior encounters a colorful circus of characters—fortune-tellers, shamans, actors, prostitutes, bohemians, and café intellectuals—all living in a fragile dream of a society about to be changed forever. A seminal work of postwar Eastern European literature, Cyclops reveals a little-known perspective on World War II from within the former Yugoslavia, one that has never before been available to an English-speaking audience. Vlada Stojiljkovic's able translation, improved by Ellen Elias-Bursac's insightful editing, preserves the striking brilliance of this riotously funny and densely allusive text. Along Melkior’s journey Cyclops satirizes both the delusions of the righteous military officials who feed the national bloodlust as well as the wayward intellectuals who believe themselves to be above the unpleasant realities of international conflict. Through Stojiljkovic's clear-eyed translation, Melkior’s peregrinations reveal how history happens and how the individual consciousness is swept up in the tide of political events, and this is accomplished in a mode that will resonate with readers of Charles Simic, Aleksandr Hemon, and Kundera.

It is a brilliant dramatisation of the famous story from Homer's Odyssey of how Odysseus blinded the Cyclops after making him drunk. The play has much to teach us, not just about satyr-drama, but also about the reception and adaptation of Homer in classical Athens; the brutal savagery of the Homeric monster is here replaced by an ironised presentation of Athenian social custom. Problems of syntax, metre and language are fully explained, and there is a sophisticated literary discussion of the play. This edition will be of interest to advanced undergraduates and graduate students studying Greek literature, as well as to scholars.

Book excerpt: The Cyclops is an Ancient Greek satyr play by Euripides, the only complete satyr play that has survived. It is a comical burlesque-like play on a story that occurs in book nine of Homer's Odyssey. Odysseus has lost his way on the voyage home from the Trojan War. He and his hungry crew make a stop in Sicily at Mount Aetna, which is inhabited by Cyclopes. They come upon the Satyrs and their father Silenus, who have been separated from their god Dionysus and enslaved by a Cyclops.

Book excerpt: A new translation of Cyclops, a Satyr play by Euripides. Cyclops is the only Satyr play to have survived in full. The Satyr plays took as their theme a well-known mythological story: here, the story is of Odysseus? encounter with the Cyclops, Polyphemus. Satyrs and their elderly leader, Silenus (whose sole desire is to spend an easy life honouring Bacchus with wine and pursuing nymphs) are introduced into the story, the Satyrs forming the chorus. In Cyclops, Silenus and his satyrs have already come into contact with Polyphemus and been enslaved by him. The Satyrs were not heroic, but are always ready to join in witty repartee ? from a safe distance. Silenus provides much of the humour, derived in large measure from his insatiable desire for alcohol. The play follows the traditional storyline and reaches the traditional conclusion ? with the escape of Odysseus and the remnants of his crew, accompanied in this case by the joyful Silenus and his Satyrs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its ribald chorus of ithyphallic, half-man / half-horse creatures, satyr drama was a peculiar part of the Athenian theatrical experience. Performed three times each year after a trilogy of tragedies, it was an integral part of the 5th- and 4th-century City Dionysia, a large festival in honour of the god Dionysus. Euripides: Cyclops is the first book-length study of this fascinating genre's only complete, extant play, a theatrical version of Odysseus' encounter with the monster Polyphemus. Shaw begins with a look at the history of the genre, following its development from early 6th-century religious processions up to the Hellenistic era. He then offers a comprehensive analysis of the Cyclops' plot and performance, using the text (alongside ancient literary fragments and visual evidence) to determine the original viewing experience: the stage, masks, costumes, actions and emotions. A detailed examination of the text reveals that Euripides associates and distinguishes his version of the story from previous iterations of the myth, especially book nine of Homer's Odyssey. Euripides handles many of the same themes as his predecessors, but he updates the Cyclops for the Athenian stage, adapting his work to reflect and comment upon contemporary religious, philosophical and literary-musical trends.

Book excerpt: Featuring a most unusual protagonist, Cyclops of Central Park dares readers to be brave and explore the world because, really, you never know what you might find... Late at night, just before he closed his eye and went to sleep in his Central Park cave, Cyclops counted his sheep. When the sun rose, he counted them again, and that's when he noticed--". . . sixteen, seventeen . . ."--one of them was missing. He knew who it was, of course. "Eugene?" It was always Eugene. Cyclops knows the world is a scary place: the grass is too sharp, the carousels are too twirly, and not all restaurants serve spaghetti. If the world isn't safe for a cyclops, it certainly isn't a safe place for a missing sheep! And so he sets off to face the many "dangers" lurking in New York City to bring Eugene home. To do so, he will have to face his fears and call for some reinforcements--his other fluffy sheep friends back at the cave. Together, they just might find Eugene and have a fun time in the city. Which goes to show, there is no place like home, but sometimes new experiences make our world a bigger and brighter place.

A Lesson for the Cyclops brings back fan-favorite character D'Arbignal, the charming and handsome swashbuckler who first captured our hearts in Shara and the Haunted Village. In this fantasy novella, we follow the lonely and miserable existence of Maria, a woman horribly disfigured and living in a traveling circus freak show. But when D'Arbignal stumbles into the circus, wounded and feverish, Maria sees a glimmer of hope. As D'Arbignal recovers and stays on at the circus, a friendship blooms between the two. However, the cruelty and jealousy of others, including the wife of the circus's Master Fencer, threatens to tear them apart. Can Maria find the strength to fight for a future filled with love and acceptance, with D'Arbignal by her side? Filled with wit, sexual tension, and a heartwarming message about the true meaning of beauty, A Lesson for the Cyclops is a must-read for fans of fantasy and romance. Author Ryk E. Spoor praised the book saying, "This is a story of what beauty means, of what simple acts can do to change the course of a life. It flows effortlessly from our first meeting with the Cyclops to the wonderful, heartwarming ending of the story—which is, itself, clearly the beginning of something grander," and author Connie J. Jasperson says, "A terribly disfigured woman whose pain and suffering is handled with compassion by the author, a circus with many wonderful minor characters, jealousy, romance and revenge—all combine to make this novella true classic. I must confess, I am a bit in love with D'Arbignal and I am now champing at the bit to get my hands on the next tale of my favorite swordsman." Don't miss this exciting addition to the Bryanae series and the continuation of D'Arbignal's story. Order your copy today!
