Excellent for all women's studies programs as well as for the mystery hound. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr. Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II’s name before he became the pontiff in 1978) published Love and Responsibility in 1960. It revealed his fully formed philosophy of marriage and sheds light on the dynamics between men and women. Some consider his analysis of the true meaning of human love as life changing and practical, shedding light on real issues between men and women. This updated and expanded edition of Edward Sri’s classic meditation on Pope John Paul II’s Love and Responsibility includes a new introduction, new chapters for single people and engaged couples, and maybe most importantly the stories of people whose lives have been transformed by Pope John Paul II’s foundational teaching on relationships. “Edward Sri is a gifted teacher and an equally talented writer. This book shows why. He breaks open Karol Wojtyla's great text, Love and Responsibility, in a way that's clear, engaging and very practical for the challenges of daily life.” – Charles J. Chaput, OFM, Archbishop of Philadelphia. In Men, Women and the Mystery of Love, Edward Sri breaks down the contents of John Paul’s epic work, making it more accessible to the reader. It isn’t a manual on sexual ethics, more so a no-nonsense discussion on issues we face as couples. He emphasizes the down-to-earth nature of Love and Responsibility, giving readers actionable advice on issues like: How to determine if a relationship is one of authentic love or is doomed to failure; The problem of pornography; The meaning of friendship; How to achieve greater intimacy in marriage; The difference between feeling “I’m in love” and love itself; and so many other valuable questions. While this book is a great personal resource, it also can be used in a variety of situations like small group studies, marriage preparation classes, and other parish settings. It offers valuable advice for just about everyone, from young single adults and engaged couples to newlyweds and couples celebrating their 35th anniversary. Study questions with each chapter make this a valuable resource not only for individual personal reading, but also for small group study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What emerges in this second book of the trilogy is that the very “ground” and content of experience is richer than what can be reduced to a particular account of it. As such, dialogue develops from the “natural” diversity of what is “of” faith and what is “of” reason. Neither faith nor reason, however, originates “from” experience; rather, both are “witnessed” in experience. In other words, taking up questions about the nature of man, whether philosophically, psychologically or in terms of social structures, manifests both a variety of points of departure and, at the same time, the manifold conversations that are possible in the “field of culture”.Focusing particularly on the work of St. John Paul II, the first essay examines the answer of reason and the answer of faith to the same question: What is man? Conversion, too, entails an “unexpected” relationship to natural truth, which, in its own way, is both adequate and inadequate to salvation. Communication, as it were, runs throughout these essays; however, in particular, there is a need to enrich our human understanding of the process of “coming to ourselves” with the insights of spiritual discernment. Axiomatically, however, it is possible to say that just as we come to exist through a relationship to others, so our healing and holiness are manifest through our relationship to others in the “Other”. Furthermore, while it is ultimately true that we exist as individually rooted in the social structure of our origin and the times in which we live, we need to critically participate in the dialogue which identifies our common “reality” and not live our lives covered in “psycho-social” labels of one kind or another. As a whole, then, there is an incomparable range and depth to “dialogue”. Indeed, given the many critical situations in the world, it is increasingly indispensable and essential that humanity choose the incredible wealth of dialogue in contrast to the possibility of a “polarised” and “conflictual” structure between people and peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book addresses the good black woman in general, no celebrity stuff, just the day to day general life of a Good black woman. The title can be very confusing when you read on but thats exactly what I want each and every reader to be: Confused. Why Good and why Black? Good is an Adjective that can mean different things to different people, it replaces other much more weighty adjectives such as Outstanding, Excellent, Fabulous etc. Good is having admirable, pleasing, superior, or positive qualities.(Collins Dictionary) Good means morally excellent, virtuous, righteous, suitable or efficient for a purpose. I can go on and on describing the word Good. Good is just good. Black is symbolic to me in the following way: Ethnically I am black but also African Black may denote a Race for people whose skin colour ranges from light to darker shades of Brown. Interesting! (Wikimedia) In Western fashion Black creates a stylish, sexy, and powerful fashion statement Several bad incidents have been named Black e.g. .Black Thursday, Black Friday, Black December, Black November etc. I live in a country where people are sensitive to being called black, others are confused as to whether they are black or not Black symbolizes secrecy, ambiguity or the unknown e.g. .Black market, Black magic, Blackmail etc. Black is just Black. The book intends to highlight the challenges that are faced by all Good black women, I get into their minds, their bodies, their souls and in their lives, be it Church life, Married Life, Family life ,Relationships to name a few. The book looks at good black women now and is aimed at being interesting to read five to ten years from now on. Life has definitely changed for every Good black women now, there are so many liberties and yet so many constraints. This is rhetoric, as the new independent woman generation does not apply across the board. There is so much competition to succeed in the corporate world and so much greed such that other things are compromised i.e. the family, children, relationships, time to play, and so forth. The Good black woman delivers an extra-ordinary juxtaposition of women seen as good yet suffering regardless. Chapter One explores men as a Mystery to women in that men is unique and women fail to understand their uniqueness. It also provides insight as to how men view women and how women will like to be viewed by men. Chapter Two is about woman aspiring to be normal in a rather dysfunctional society. It explores how some working women struggle to survive and thus resort to being mistresses amongst other things. It also looks at raising children in the midst of all the social ills being witnessed today. Chapter Three looks at how some women make sacrifices and marry thinking marriage will be a bed of roses only to find that its a bed of thorns mainly because of abstract reasoning abilities that cause conflict in marriages. It also looks at that the way Chapter Four looks at how women regard divorce as a nightmare in that when they marry they think life will be blissful. However, certain circumstances force women to divorce. Note that the writer mentions other causes of divorce other that physical abuse. Chapter Five is about women who have feelings for other women, feelings that they sometimes explore wrongly. It also looks at the different reasons why women get into such unions that do not last though some do. Chapter Six reveals the other side of women, when they betray each other for various reasons. One or two women have encountered one or two forms of betrayal form their friends, family, spouse and so on. Understanding the cause of the betrayal may cause other women to wary of it. This chapter deals with the harsh realities of betrayal. Chapters Seven is about the fear of Loneliness. Need I mention that the more a woman stays in an unhealthy relationship the difficult it is to let go, but the latter happens becaus

Book excerpt: The steward of Willingford Hall was murdered in the Dell on 12 March 1919. I found his body because I'd been thrown by a horse. It's difficult to say which event was more unlikely. Willingford Hall stable lad Harry Green is about to make a discovery even more unlikely than a corpse. With the estate near bankruptcy and the rise of automobiles fast replacing horse travel, Harry, a young woman passing as a lad, will soon be out of a job. Facing the knowledge she has no skills in the service positions open to women, Harry resolves to discover who murdered the steward, thus becoming a woman who can determine her own future. But as her investigation proceeds, a second murder demonstrates just how dangerous her knowledge is. Soon, no matter where she rides, she finds that somebody is following her. Part coming-of-age and part cozy mystery, All Men Glad and Wise confronts a time of tremendous social change: the inequities of service jobs, the quandaries of grooms as technology advances, and the patriarchal assumptions that exclude women from both valued work and riding astride. Harry, like horsemanship, and like England, is on the cusp of a world looking forward.

Lassner questions prevailing approaches to women's war writing by exploring the complex range of pacifist and activist literary forms of women who redefined such pieties as patriotism and duty and heroism and victimization.

Book excerpt: This volume of the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women completes the four-volume project and contains more than 400 biographies of women active in the Tang through Ming dynasties (618-1644). Many of the entries are the result of original research and provide the only substantial information on women available in English. Of note is the inclusion of a large number of women who reached positions of authority during this period as well as women artists and writers, especially poets, during this period of increased female literacy and more liberal social attitudes to women's cultural roles. Wherever possible, entries incorporate translations of poems and sometimes prose works so as to let the women speak for themselves. The book also includes a multitude of entertainers and actresses. The volume includes a Guide to Chinese Words Used, a Chronology of Dynasties and Major Rulers, a Finding List by Background or Fields of Endeavor, and a Glossary of Chinese Names. It will prove to be a useful tool for research and teaching.
