Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is a lesson. Unconscious life experiences teach us lessons every day and we need to learn from those lessons. Whatever experience I am going through I need to maintain myself worth. My life experiences and struggles may cause society to perceive myself worth indifferent but I know who I am, and with that being said there is no room for inferiority by others. Others may be confused about their perception of me but I know I am beautiful and fearlessly made. Everyone must feel appreciated and valued. However, there is a catch to developing self worth, inner peace, and joy in order to become an individual with purpose. Having someone tare down your character by being ridiculed within your own race confirms that we need healing from slavery.

Book excerpt: Reveals the troubling intimacy between Black women and the making of US global power The year 1968 marked both the height of the worldwide Black liberation struggle and a turning point for the global reach of American power, which was built on the counterinsurgency honed on Black and other oppressed populations at home. The next five decades saw the consolidation of the culture of the American empire through what Erica R. Edwards calls the “imperial grammars of blackness.” This is a story of state power at its most devious and most absurd, and, at the same time, a literary history of Black feminist radicalism at its most trenchant. Edwards reveals how the long war on terror, beginning with the late–Cold War campaign against organizations like the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and the Black Liberation Army, has relied on the labor and the fantasies of Black women to justify the imperial spread of capitalism. Black feminist writers not only understood that this would demand a shift in racial gendered power, but crafted ways of surviving it. The Other Side of Terror offers an interdisciplinary Black feminist analysis of militarism, security, policing, diversity, representation, intersectionality, and resistance, while discussing a wide array of literary and cultural texts, from the unpublished work of Black radical feminist June Jordan to the memoirs of Condoleezza Rice to the television series Scandal. With clear, moving prose, Edwards chronicles Black feminist organizing and writing on “the other side of terror”, which tracked changes in racial power, transformed African American literature and Black studies, and predicted the crises of our current era with unsettling accuracy.

Book excerpt: Everybody has a story. When I was 21 years old, I thought I should write my life story. Why? Because I believed that I had experienced so much as a young woman, and to me, I had seen it all. Being raised in a loving church, being on TV, attending the Grammy's and music award shows, etc., little did I know that I would end up using drugs and being involved with someone who would beat me as a sport until he was satisfied. And when that satisfaction needed more fuel, the beatings escalated to threats of death. This book has been hard to get out of me. Some things are absolutely too painful or shameful for me, but here I share in-depth; so that you, my readers, may know that you, too, can overcome your past and that you are not alone. I share a lot of my entire life, my family, and events that played major roles in my life. The title, Beat Up, Beat Down and STILL STANDING, has a REAL meaning to me. I have literally been beat up, with black eyes, busted head, bumps and bruises to prove it. Beat down, well, that's a term I've used for the legal system that let me down beginning in 1986 through THE PRESENT-I'm STILL waiting on my pardon. At the time of my arrest, there was no law to protect me against someone who said he was going to kill me (now it's called a terrorist threat). From then till now, "I'm still standing," and having done all to stand, I STAND. I write this book also for several additional reasons: 1) I desire inmates to be empowered through my story and gain hope for their lives life, contributing members of society. 3) I want society to know from the pages of this book and my personal experience that the legal system can fail, and if they have a loved one locked up, not to give up on them or the legal system-because all things are possible: 4) to wake up the effects of domestic violence and to bring awareness to this issue. 5) to literally show the process of "a life saved by grace" and how I "walked it out in."

Hope was molested, raped, and mentally and physically abused by the tender age of five. Hope ran away, only to find refuge on a street corner. At fifteen, she was scouted by an agent and quickly became a professional high-fashion model. Her newfound career took her off the streets but transplanted her into another dimension of international child sexual exploitation. Hope married the same type of man she ran away from as a child, except he was from a very prominent family. She found herself living in a coveted environment known only to the elite of society, enduring the same types of abuse she had experienced on the streets. A divorced mother of two children and without a college education, Hope ended up in a battered women’s shelter in an attempt to rebuild her life and stop the cycle of abuse. She graduated from USC with her master’s degree while on welfare. Hope radiates inspiration! Her story is one that you will never forget! Soup kitchen to socialite and back again, Hope’s resilience is remarkable! “Her positive energy lit up the room”. — D. Evans, OC Register “Effervescent and stunning”. — A. Gutierrez, OC Register “This book has been added to the California state mandated Domestic Violence Advocate Training curriculum. Still Standing will speak to survivors, family, friends, and experts”. — M. Presley, Laura’s House “We are so proud of Hope Concordia and her selfless desire to help others. As I recount my life’s journey, His presence has been with me through it all. According to Romans 8:28 (AMP), “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good.” Hope and trust in God always, and you, too, will find yourself still standing.
