When Eugene Mast leaves his Amish community in Worthington, Indiana, to teach in faraway Kalona, Iowa, he also must leave the love of his life, Naomi Miller. For the next nine months of the school term, Eugene and Naomi keep their romance alive through love letters from his heart to hers, and from hers back to his. Eugene writes of his concern that in his absence Naomi may find the attractions of another suitor to her liking. Naomi worries that Eugene may fall prey to the “liberal” Mennonite beliefs in the community where he now lives. Both can hardly wait until the school year is up and they’re finally reunited. A poignant and tender love story that will warm the hearts of readers everywhere.

Johanna Van Veen is a force to be reckoned with and will stain your thoughts a brilliant shade of crimson." — Rachel Gillig, New York Times bestselling author of One Dark Window Spirits are drawn to salt, be it blood or tears. Roos Beckman has a spirit companion only she can see. Ruth—strange, corpse-like, and dead for centuries—is the light of Roos' life. That is, until the wealthy young widow Agnes Knoop visits one of Roos' backroom seances, and the two strike up a connection. Soon, Roos is whisked away to the crumbling estate Agnes inherited upon the death of her husband, where an ill woman haunts the halls, strange smells drift through the air at night, and mysterious stone statues reside in the family chapel. Something dreadful festers in the manor, but still, the attraction between Roos and Agnes is undeniable. Then, someone is murdered. Poor, alone, and with a history of 'hysterics', Roos is the obvious culprit. With her sanity and innocence in question, she'll have to prove who—or what—is at fault or lose everything she holds dear. "A Sapphic séance of preternatural proportions, My Darling Dreadful Thing summons a stunning new literary voice to be reckoned with. Johanna van Veen reaches beyond the veil to conjure up a gothic shocker like no other." — Clay McLeod Chapman, author of What Kind of Mother and Ghost Eaters

Download or read book My Dearest Suicide, written by Onuwabuchi Ayozie and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-08-14 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Dearest Suicide captures an individuals' mental battle over how to perceive the numerous unavoidable ails in life. The dialogue expressed by the individual is unstable as the position of perceiving each of these numerous unavoidable ails through a natural viewpoint, as opposed to a spiritual viewpoint gets teeter-tottered multiple times due to selfish and then unselfish thinking. As the individual selfishly scrutinizes the events experienced (Evil Spirit), a familiar but fairly used perspective that separates the identity of the individual from the unavoidable ail (Holy Spirit) becomes visible and dominate. The Holy Spirit and the Evil One in the individual are the source for the two conflicting perspectives that leave the individual torn. The intent of this book is for those whose thinking is formed from a spiritual orientation who have met with seemingly unavoidable ails of this world described by the individual in this poetic sonnet.

Book Synopsis The Wind in the Willows by : Kenneth Grahame
Download or read book The Wind in the Willows written by Kenneth Grahame and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.' So says Rat to Mole, as he introduces him to the delights of the river and his friends Toad, the spirit of rebellion, and Badger, the spirit of England. But it is a world where the motor-car is about to wreck the gipsy caravan, the revolutionaries in the Wild Wood are threatening the social fabric, the god Pan is abroad, and the warm seductive whispers of the south are drifting into the English lanes. An international children's classic, The Wind in the Willows grew from the author's letters to his young son, yet it is concerned almost exclusively with adult themes: fear of radical changes in political, social, and economic power. Mole's acceptance into the conservative world of the River Bank, and Toad's wild attempts to escape from it, are narrated in virtuoso language ranging from lively parody to elaborate fin-de-siècle mysticism. A profoundly English fiction with a world following, it is a book for adults adopted by children, a timeless masterpiece, and a vital portrait of an age. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Synopsis The Real Kenneth Grahame by : Elisabeth Galvin
Download or read book The Real Kenneth Grahame written by Elisabeth Galvin and published by White Owl. This book was released on 2022-01-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He wrote one of the most quintessentially English books, yet Kenneth Grahame (1859 – 1932) was a Scot. He was four years old when his mother died and his father became an alcoholic, so Kenneth grew up with his grandmother who lived on the banks of the beloved River Thames. Forced to abandon his dreams of studying at Oxford, he was accepted as a clerk at the Bank of England where he became one of the youngest men to be made company secretary. He narrowly escaped death in 1903 when he was mistaken for the Bank’s governor and shot at several times. He wrote secretly in his spare time for magazines and became a contemporary of contributors including Rudyard Kipling, George Bernard Shaw and WB Yeats. Kenneth’s first book, Pagan Papers (1893) initiated his success, followed by The Golden Age (1895) and Dream Days (1898), which turned him into a celebrated author. Ironically, his most famous novel today was the least successful during his lifetime: The Wind in the Willows (1908) originated as letters to his disabled son, who was later found dead on a train line after a suspected suicide. Kenneth never recovered from the tragedy and died with a broken heart in earshot of the River Thames. His widow, Elspeth, dedicated the rest of her life to preserving her husband’s name and promoting his work.
