Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography and Reminiscences of Theophilus Noel This volume is so different from any other you ever read, as all else I have done has been, and is different from the ordinary. To follow in the path and well beaten road, as others love to do, never had any charms for me. The ways of others have never been my ways; and that mine was popular is attested by the great number of thieves and imitators, counterfeiters and apes, who have sought to make - because I do - by following on my trail, as the hyena follows the trail of the lion, or the coyote that of the trapper and guide. It is to and from the criticism of the smart set, the educated apes and baboons, that I owe the greater part of my success in life, in all the many and varied paths and ways of my own blazing in new and unexplored lands and enterprises that have resulted in public benefaction. Egotism came to me with old age and from looking back ward and seeing the thousands of favored and educated ones I had deemed as being my superiors, left far in the rear in the race of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Distinguished Men: With an Autobiography Two motives conspire to induce me to offer this book to the public: The first is to acquire the means of subsistence; the second is to add something to the stock of human knowledge and thereby increase human happiness; and while I do not expect to present any new truths, for that would imply a sepa rate creation, yet the manifestations of old truths are as various as the ever varying phases of nature; and these possess the interest of new truths. Man is said to be the universe in miniature; that there is no form of which he is not the type, no tone to which his being is not the response. The proper study then of mankind is man. Observation is the first fruitful source of knowledge regarding men, because in addition to the five senses which are channels of communi cation, we are endowed with spirit or mind, which is etherial, all-pervasive, and eternal. Biography is the next best source of information. It is not only the written life of man, it is also a record of human character. In the hands of a skillful artist it is a living image. Self-knowledge is the key to unlock the hidden knowledge of others. I shall therefore commence my work with an autobiographical sketch, adorned only with simple truth, which will constitute its chief merit. I am con scious of no desire for notoriety, I have outlived the love of fame, and if I had acquired fame when young, it would have killed me, as it has killed thousands in every age of the world. Autobiography is the highest source of personal knowledge, reminiscences next, biography third. And history last. In the first, we have the consciousness of our secret thoughts and actions; in the second, the visible form and apparent life; in the third, the record of human character; and in the fourth, a narrative of human events, the causes of whichare frequently left to conjecture. I shall endeavor to show that there are but few elementary principles in the character of man; that during the last two thousand years, but two individuals, Julius Caesar and George Washington, have pos sessed them in an eminent degree; that they are alike in all men, differing only in degree; and that there are but four such elementary principles: first, honesty of purpose second. Practical common sense; third, self-knowledge; fourth, self-government. In these elementary principles there is un varying unity; in their manifestations to the world. Under the in uence of surrounding circumstances, there is endless variety. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Carroll The writer of these pages was born in Henderson County, Tennessee, Nov. 28th, 1841, near 57 years ago. My earliest recollections of life-are those of absolute pleasure, associated as they are with the remembrance of one of the kindest of mothers, a father who looked after my interest, a doting grand father, who lived' just across the farm half a mile from our house, who had me believe I was one of the grandest of boys, two grandmothers who thought I was quite a hero generally, one of whom, Grandmother Burns, made her home-part of the time at my father 's house. Here I was not scolded or petted but dealt with as though I were a real gentleman, which -i appreciated very much. When I did wrong, which I frequent ly did the matter was discussed with me as one of the auditors and frequently I thought before the conversation ended that, should I be naughty again, grandpapa, whom I dearly loved, would hardly ever speak to me again. Thus I was deterred from a repetition, but perhaps did other mischief equally wrong. Of our immediate family there were seven children - three boys and four girls - I, being the eldest; J. C: Carroll of this county, next; _dr. J. R. Carroll, now of this town, youngest. Of my sisters, Martha, the eldest, many years since dead; Emily next, now living; Cynthia Ann died five years ago; Virginia, the youngest, died in infancy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife: An Autobiography To tell my own story is to tell that of my famous husband, General John A. Logan. Our marriage was a real partner ship for thirty-one happy years. I shared his thoughts and plans no less when he was a senator than when he was a pros ecuting attorney in southern Illinois. We were working in the harmony of a common purpose, whether I was in the kitchen improvising a meal for his friends when he was run ning for the legislature, or entertaining in Washington after his fame was secure and his influence nation-wide. With him I witnessed the stirring events in which he was a leader on the borderland of the Confederacy, where he raised his Union regiment. We were together whenever possible dur ing the war. I travelled with him on his political campaigns after the war. Thus I came to know not only the eminent soldiers and public men of his time, but the men in the ranks who believed in him and followed him, whether to Vicksburg and Atlanta or in his political battles. Pollak, St. Louis, Mo My parents' names Were Jacob and Sarah Pollak, both Bohemian by birth. Father was a hightoned, honorable and much honored and successful merchant. He dealt largely and chiefly in wool, which was consigned to him in thousands of bales from Hungary. He had a large establishment, employing several hundred men in picking, assorting, baling and compressing the wool ready for transporta tion to Leipzig, the greatest mart for all staple products in Europe at that time. The transportation was made in very large wagons, with broad-tired wheels, and drawn by twelve to twenty-four horses, according to the grade on the most beautiful turnpike roads. He was very prosperous in business, but a great invalid, suffering from a cancer in his stomach. He died in Carlsbad in 1826. He was an inveterate chess player. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Memoirs, Vol. 1: 1802 to 1821 In its limitation to his years of youth, the Me'moz'res of Dumas resemble that equally delightful book, the long autobiographical fragment by George Sand. Both may contain much Die/dung as well as at least we see the youth of the great novelists as they liked to see it them selves. The Mémoz'res, with Mes Bétes, possess this advantage over most of the books, that the most crabbed critic cannot say that Dumas did not write them himself. In these works, certainly, be was unaided by Maquet or any other collaborator. They are all his own, and the essential point of note is that they display all the humour, the goodness of heart, the overflowing joy in life, which make the charm of the novels. Here, unmixed, unadulterated, we have that essence of Dumas with which he transfigured the tame copy drawn up by Maquet and others under his direction. He told them where to find their historical materials, he gave them the leading ideas of the plot, told them how to block out the chapters, and then he took these chapters and infused into them his own spirit, the spirit which, in its pure shape, pervades every page of the Mémoz'res. They demonstrate that, while he received mechanical aid from collaborators, took from their hands the dry bones of his romances, it was he who made the dry bones live. He is now d'artagnan, now Athos, now Gorenflot, now Chicot, - all these and many other personages are mere aspects of the immortal, the creative Alexandre. The troops had been ordered to the Mississippi to build forts and occupy that country, and my brother was to go along as clerk for the troops. He told me that I would have to wait until Mr. Devotion, the owner, went to New York and got a supply of goods, and came back, before I could go, and I must try and accompany him through the journey. I passed the sum mer with my books, and kept the store in order, until Mr. Devotion returned, when we started for the Mississippi.
