It is about my struggles to make sense of a dysfunctional family and to break free from the influences of my Mother and to become my own person and the best Mother I could be for my own children. It is about my struggles against the bureaucracy and the supposed infallibility of both the ChildCare and Mental Health Systems. It is also about how life has become something worth living and how good the future can be for my family. About the AuthorDonna was born in Essex and moved to Australia when she was 5. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID years. A time of constriction, of staying at home, of restricting our breathing and our voices with masks, of limiting our travel and leisure experiences, of narrowing our social lives to those who live with us in our suddenly cramped and crowded houses. When our lungs suddenly didn’t seem wide enough for our needs. When we quarantined, and then again, and sometimes again. Welcome to the Narrow Place. In these personal essays and stories, Rabbi Philip Graubart ranges through his extensive rabbinic career and paints moving portraits of characters, both real and imagined, who find themselves stuck in narrow places, and then, through grace or dogged effort or luck, manage to widen their circumstances and find a measure of redemption. A Palestinian friend yearns for companionship with Jews. An inspiring young baker wrestles with a deadly disease. A straying holy man struggles with his conscience. High school students rage against their confinements. And the author shares his battle with a confining illness. In each of these tales of restriction, expansiveness lurks in the background, and then, blessedly, breaks through.

Out of these concerns, Investors Syndicate was born, one of the first of a new type of financial institution designed to meet the savings needs of the average person. Here is the story of this financial pioneer, whose innovation has today grown into one of the nation's largest financial services companies, American Express Financial Advisors. The book draws on Tappan's diaries, business correspondence, and various family oral histories. Tappan's life, work and ideas chronicle the changes in spending and savings, work and leisure, the culture of politics and money, that have given rise to our modern notions of consumer finance.

Book excerpt: In this bestselling tour de force of a culinary manifesto, Great British Bake Off alum and former Guardian columnist Ruby Tandoh will help you fall back in love with food—from a great selection of recipes to straight-talking, sympathetic advice on mental health and body image “I read it greedily.” —Nigella Lawson Ruby Tandoh implores us to enjoy and appreciate food in all of its many forms. Food is, after all, what nourishes our bodies, helps us commemorate important milestones, cheers us up when we're down, expands our minds, and connects us with the people we love. But too often, it’s a source of anxiety and unhappiness. With Eat Up!, Tandoh celebrates one of life’s greatest pleasures, drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as Julia Child to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, flavor memories to jellied eels. She takes on the wellness industry and fad diets, and rejects the snobbery surrounding “good” and “bad” food, in wide-ranging essays that will reshape the way you think about eating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A German princess who married a decadent and lazy Russian prince, Catherine mobilized support amongst the Russian nobles, playing off of her husband's increasing corruption and abuse of power. She then staged a coup that ended with him being strangled with his own scarf in the halls of the palace, and herself crowned the Empress of Russia. Intelligent and determined, Catherine modeled herself off of her grandfather in-law, Peter the Great, and sought to further modernize and westernize Russia. She believed that the best way to do this was through a ravenous acquisition of art, which Catherine often used as a form of diplomacy with other powers throughout Europe. She was a self-proclaimed "glutton for art" and she would be responsible for the creation of the Hermitage, one of the largest museums in the world, second only to the Louvre. Catherine also spearheaded the further expansion of St. Petersburg, and the magnificent architectural wonder the city became is largely her doing. There are few women in history more fascinating than Catherine the Great, and for the first time, Susan Jaques brings her to life through the prism of art.

This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a revitalised account of the study of children’s drawing by outlining a departure from existing approaches privileging developmentalist accounts and presenting drawing as a specialised human endeavour separated from other material entanglements constituting children’s everyday experiences. The book takes on current developments in the fields of early childhood arts and early childhood literacies to advocate for process-oriented, new materialist and decolonial approaches that re-conceptualise the study of children’s drawing. It proposes a future-oriented approach, centred on thinking experimentally with a focus on nonrepresentational elements, such as movement, sensation, intensity, rhythm, story and place, which singularly assemble in drawing events. Thus, the book discusses drawing as a process of sense-making that is not enclosed in the individualised body of the child and that unfolds corporeally in time and space. It revises the relation of drawing with symbolisation by suggesting that the use of language and signs in drawing form in entanglement with matter and sensation in processes of creative speculation connected with the movement of thought. Presenting a series of contributions by internationally recognised scholars and artists, the book aims to create synergies between theory and practice that speak of everyday realities interconnecting children, learning and sense-making.
