Book excerpt: This book is an Esoteric interpretation of Emanuel Swedenborg’s spiritual writings. It is written from a sinner’s perspective as a personal memoir meant to impart spiritual guidance by example. It is a hands-on self-help book on how to "birth" the Divine Feminine Essence of Love from within. The author traces the Divine back to its original source as Essential Love and Essential Innocence, which begins in the body as a sensual feeling of love, and through the process of regeneration it becomes the Word of God. By sharing the spiritual feeling of the "Word" as love, it becomes a blissful union with the Divine within as the feeling of the "New Church." The "New Church" is the perception of an influx of spiritual love flowing from within as happiness. But it also has a two-fold purpose: For when the feeling of love from a sensual life has been transformed into the spiritual feeling of love, and when done on a mass scale, it ultimately manifests as the true purpose of the New Church, Swedenborg’s "New Jerusalem," the Brotherhood of Mankind as the feeling of Heaven on Earth.

Book excerpt: A Theory of Feelings examines the problem of human feelings, widely understood from phenomenological, analytic, and historical perspectives. It begins with an analysis of drives and affects, and pursues the nature of "feeling" itself, in all of its variability, through a close study of the distinctive categories of emotions, emotional dispositions, orientive feelings, and the passions. As such, the starting point of the analysis entails an examination of the characteristics of human involvement, or our ways of being in the world. Building upon this assessment of the conditions of human involvement, the philosophical history and emotional economy characteristic of modern relationships is treated, and the nature of expression, social division, suffering, and responsibility is evaluated in light of the theory of feeling presented here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Affinitive Life: Part 1 in Conjunction: The Book of Life is mainly about life on Earth concerning the invited signals of love that create addictions and eventually transcend into affinitive life. It is commonly characterized in the world as a passion, hobby, or bond to someone or something; and it is practiced or lived by means of a habitual lifestyle or habit by virtue of signal responsiveness in response to behavior in interaction with whom or what affinitive life centers on. The surprisingly interesting spiritual fact about the love signal is that it lies beyond ordinary experiences and supernaturally transcends into an acquired spirit that is grafted into your natural spirit as an integral part, which is then potentially lived as affinitive life, and in turn, a passion, hobby, or bond to someone or something. Affinitive life as a passion, hobby, or bond is actually unknown to the world as such. That is because it is spirit-based and all spiritual lives are physically based. First Corinthians 2:14-15 says, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." That means scientists could never use genetic engineering to find the true meaning of passions, hobbies, or bonding to someone or something as an affinitive life because it is foolishness to them. Genetic engineering is the direct manipulation of an organism's genome, which means its genes are used by biotechnology, also called genetic modification, which is genetic manipulation of the genes of an organism's genome. This book is the book of affinitive life, part 1, to the natural side of life and the book of life to the spirit side of life of invited signals of love. For that reason, the name of this book is The Book of Affinitive Life: Part 1 in Conjunction: The Book of Life. It is called The Book of Affinitive Life as it refers to and relates to the natural side of life first, and then to the same degree, it relates to the spirit side of life. Additionally, it characterizes the Book of Life, which no natural or ordinary man could write; there had to be a spiritual component. All affinitive lives are lived optionally as a habitual lifestyle or habit in natural life, in conjunction with natural life as an integral part.

Book excerpt: In this richly nuanced assessment of the various dimensions of mutuality in psychoanalysis, Aron shows that the relational approach to psychoanalysis is a powerful guide to issues of technique and therapeutic strategy. From his reappraisal of the concepts of interaction and enactment, to his examination of the issue of analyst self-disclosure, to his concluding remarks on the relational import of the analyst's ethics and values, Aron squarely accepts the clinical responsibilities attendant to a postmodern critique of psychoanalytic foundations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard Brady has given us a rare, delightful, and thought-provoking book—a volume that belongs on the desk or the bed-stand of anyone in search of the rich and varied dimensions of Christian love. Christians are taught that God is love and are commanded to love, their neighbors and their enemies. These truths are not controversial. What is controversial and, indeed, has been controversial throughout the history of Christianity is the meaning of this love. This book explores the tradition of Christian reflection on the meaning, and experience of love, loving, and being loved. Many books have been written about Christian love, but no book has gathered together this kind of primary source material and covered such a wide range of perspectives, allowing the reader to engage directly with the thought and experience of some of the greatest Christian minds on the topic of love. Bernard Brady covers with remarkable clarity the breadth and depth of discussions on Christian love from the Bible to contemporary experience to create this-a survey of how Christians through the ages have understood love. Beginning of course with the Bible, Brady examines the key writings and thinkers on the nature of Christian love: St. Augustine; mystics such as Bernard of Clairvaux, Hadewich, and Julian of Norwich; the great tradition and literature of courtly love, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, Sören Kierkegaard, and others. In addition, Brady devotes chapters to several 20th century figures whose lives seemingly embodied Christian love: Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Pope John Paul II. Finally, Christian Love addresses contemporary deliberations over the meaning of love with an analysis of the modern writings of Martin D'Arcy, Reinhold Niebuhr, Jules Toner, Gustavo Gutiérrez, Gene Outka, Margaret Farley, Edward Vacek, and Don Browning. In a synthesizing concluding chapter, Brady offers his own insightful and introspective understanding of the substance of Christian love, suggesting that it is an affective affirmation of another, that it is both responsive and unitive, and that it is steadfast and enduring. As a beautiful contemplative companion to one's own spiritual understanding, or as a thoughtful and meaningful gift, Christian Love is in every sense a treasure to behold, read, and share with those you love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years-especially the past decade, in sharp contrast to preceding decades-knowledge in the field of emotions has been steadily increasing. This knowledge comes from many different specialties: Emotion is a truly interdisciplinary subject. Workers in the fields of physiology, neurology, ethology, physiological psychology, personality and social psychology, clinical psychology and psychiatry, medicine, nursing, social work, and the clergy are all directly concerned with emotion. Professions such as law and architecture have an obvious concern with emotions as they affect human motives and needs. The various branches of art, especially the performing arts, certainly deal with the emotions, especially with the expression of emotions. Constantine Stanislavsky, the Russian theatrical genius, revolu tionized modem theater by developing a training method for actors and actresses that emphasized creating genuine emotion on the stage, the emotion appropriate to the character and the life situation being depicted. Indeed, one can hardly think of any human activity that is not related in some way to the field of emotion. Since the contributions to the subject of emotions come from so many different disciplines, it is difficult to find the important common themes that can yield an understanding of the field as a whole. This volume will attempt to make that task easier, but I recognize that no one can treat all of the diverse material expertly and in detail. My aim will be to represent all important types of contributions and perhaps point the way for further and more intensive study of special topics.
