Military technological changes decisively shaped geopolitics and the fortunes of states, empires and civilizations. In his book Jimmy Teng claims that to understand the impacts of these military technological changes is in fact to understand the causes behind the following major historical puzzles or important facts: the leading position of the Near East during the dawn of civilization; the splendid achievements of Greece, India and China during the axial era; the classical golden age of India under the Gupta Empire; the Abbasid Golden Age of the Islamic world and the Sung Puzzle of China during the medieval era; and the rise of the West during the early modern and modern era.

Book excerpt: “An eye-opening and riveting account of how guns make it into the black market and into the hands of criminals and drug lords.”--Adam Winkler From the author of El Narco and winner of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize, a searing investigation into the enormous black market for firearms, essential to cartels and gangs in the drug trade and contributing to the epidemic of mass shootings. The gun control debate is revived with every mass shooting. But far more people die from gun deaths on the street corners of inner city America and across the border as Mexico's powerful cartels battle to control the drug trade. Guns and drugs aren't often connected in our heated discussions of gun control-but they should be. In Ioan Grillo's groundbreaking new work of investigative journalism, he shows us this connection by following the market for guns in the Americas and how it has made the continent the most murderous on earth. Grillo travels to gun manufacturers, strolls the aisles of gun shows and gun shops, talks to federal agents who have infiltrated biker gangs, hangs out on Baltimore street corners, and visits the ATF gun tracing center in West Virginia. Along the way, he details the many ways that legal guns can cross over into the black market and into the hands of criminals, fueling violence here and south of the border. Simple legislative measures would help close these loopholes, but America's powerful gun lobby is uncompromising in its defense of the hallowed Second Amendment. Perhaps, however, if guns were seen not as symbols of freedom, but as key accessories in our epidemics of addiction, the conversation would shift. Blood Gun Money is that conversation shifter.

Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the most significant and challenging problems we face today, and many organisations have recognised their responsibility in reducing emissions and environmental degradation and regenerating biodiversity. However, conventional leadership has failed to respond adequately to the magnitude of the threat, and a profound change in corporate leadership is required to substantively cut emissions and change climate policy to minimise further destructive environmental impact. This book sets out the qualities and approaches needed by leaders to successfully develop and implement climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. Bringing together the foremost experts in climate change leadership from business, leadership, psychology and coaching backgrounds, this book addresses the failures of current leadership practice and proposes a variety of models of how climate change leadership capabilities can be effectively developed in organisations. It is structured around four concepts: foundations, which includes models of environmental, ecological and evolutionary leadership; transitions, which looks at transformational and ethical models that are being repurposed for the age of sustainability; progressions, which explores innovative models that are being developed for the current age including systems, adaptation and maturity-based models of leadership; and actions, which includes models of sustainable goal setting and climate leadership coaching and development. The book is written for corporate leaders, researchers and educators and will be an invaluable addition to the leadership curriculum and executive development programmes to help the next generation of leaders respond to global challenges.

'Classic suspenseful noir' The Times Dany Longo is blonde, beautiful — and thoroughly unpredictable. After doing a favour for her boss, she finds herself behind the wheel of his exquisite Thunderbird on a sun-kissed Parisian morning. On impulse she decides to head south. What started as an impromptu joy-ride rapidly takes a turn for the chilling when strangers all along the unfamiliar route swear they recognise Dany from the previous day. But that’s impossible: she was at work, she was in Paris, she was miles away... wasn’t she? From the author of A Very Long Engagement comes a tangled, terrifying psychological thriller worthy of Georges Simenon, Paula Hawkins or Patricia Highsmith.

Book excerpt: With the spate of mass shootings in schools and crowded public venues in recent decades, gun control in the United States has become a perennial topic in the national conversation. Conflicts in the debate on gun control include the Second Amendment, the NRA, common sense gun laws, public safety, and more. Through this collection of articles, readers will witness how the discussion of gun control has evolved from the 1960s through today, from the political assassinations of significant figures such as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Orlando nightclub massacre and the school shooting in Parkland, Florida in 2018.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal and public policies concerning youth gun violence tend to rely heavily on crime reports, survey data, and statistical methods. Rarely is attention given to the young voices belonging to those who carry high-powered semiautomatic handguns. In Language of the Gun, Bernard E. Harcourt recounts in-depth interviews with youths detained at an all-malecorrectional facility, exploring how they talk about guns and what meanings they ascribe to them in a broader attempt to understand some of the assumptions implicit in current handgun policies. In the process, Harcourt redraws the relationships among empirical research, law, and public policy. Home to over 150 repeat offenders ranging in age from twelve to seventeen, the Catalina Mountain School is made up of a particular stratum of boys—those who have committed the most offenses but will still be released upon reaching adulthood. In an effort to understand the symbolic and emotional language of guns and gun carrying, Harcourt interviewed dozens of these incarcerated Catalina boys. What do these youths see in guns? What draws them to handguns? Why do some of them carry and others not? For Harcourt, their often surprising answers unveil many of the presuppositions that influence our laws and policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concealment of any kind by our government to keep secrets of their criminal activities must not be tolerated especially when the government, in this case the municipality of the City of Atlanta trespasses on private properties and illegally dumps for years their hazardous waste. If they will do this, how can we the public, trust them with our drinking water?? 100% transparency is required! I've inscribed these pages after a number of alarming experiences dating back to the mid-1960s through present day. Imagine, all three levels of government have been and are allowing the ongoing concealment of a deeply massive hazardous illegal dumpsite. This site created by a dominant municipality, whose authoritative power extends throughout the entire Southeastern section of the USA. From 1960s through 2000, this city's illegal trespassed entirely upon private properties of low-income blacks who lived adjacent the notorious all-black Perry Homes Housing Project. This city disposed more than three hundred thousand cubic yards of hazardous waste there. To make matters worse, the city zealously concealed and deceived every effort to expose their illegal activities for more than two decades to present day. My efforts and litigation's have been relentlessly thwarted for years, due to the city's predominant goal to obtain the last parcel of land they disposed waste thereon, which unfortunately I still own. The City of Atlanta's law department and Public Works department deceptive method of condemning only my four properties has left me no other choice but to write this book. Public safety and health concerns have yet to be considered by any government, concerning this illegal dumpsite, consistently releases contamination into the air and directly into state and national waterways. My eight years of investigations reveal extensive ongoing damage to the public and environment. The publication of these facts will give insight into the evidence that our government doesn't want revealed. Ultimately, there is no such law on the books that address a rogue government agency; therefore, we as citizens in the USA, are left helpless to concealment consequences of a never-ending contamination source affecting a minimum of three states and the Gulf of Mexico. This book aspired me to create the movement called Our Public Trust (OurPublictrust.com). We must unite globally to speak up and DEMAND TRANSPARENCY WHEN IT COMES TO OUR PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY! May God protect us!
