Book excerpt: This volume examines issues of public relations as experienced by a multinational corporation subsidiary in the actual day-to-day context of China. By taking into account influential organizational members from non-public relations areas, their viewpoints about good public relations, and their interface with local public relations workers in public relations situations, this study puts into perspective the intricacy of local public relations workers' working conditions and its impact. The study also grants attention to behavioral frameworks in operation in public relations situations and reveals their informing and regulating effects on local public relations workers' decision-making and actions. In this sense, the study allows the chance for researchers to get closer to the real-world nuances and consequences of the internal processes involved in an multinational corporation subsidiary's public relations.

Book excerpt: This Open-Access book investigates corporate diplomacy as a legitimation strategy of multinational companies in the United Arab Emirates. The author applies a neo-institutional public relations perspective, according to which societal expectations significantly shape corporate diplomacy communication. Using a multi-method research design, the author shows how corporate diplomacy is used in the host country, what role local media coverage and relationship management fulfill, and what effects corporate diplomacy has on corporate legitimacy in the host country community, i.e., UAE residents. The findings provide substantial insights into how multinational corporations seek legitimacy through corporate diplomacy and demonstrate how these efforts and the legitimation of corporations are affected by the media and the host country's public.

Book excerpt: International Public Relations: Negotiating Culture, Identity, and Power offers the first critical-cultural approach to international public relations theory and practice. Authors Patricia A. Curtin and T. Kenn Gaither introduce students to a cultural-economic model and to the accompanying practice matrix to explain public relations techniques and practices in a variety of regulatory, political, and cultural climates. Key Features: Illustrates how theory informs practice: The cultural-economic model is built around the circuit-of-culture theory, and the associated practice matrix shows students how to apply this theory to any particular problem or issue. Offers a truly international scope: Going beyond the Western, democratic, corporate perspective, this book critically examines the global diversity of public relations practice with examples from countries around the world. Represents a paradigm shift in international public relations scholarship: Extending well beyond regional and case study approaches, the integrated critical-cultural technique of this book extends current theory. Emphasizes values and ethics: Guidelines for ethical practice are provided to more effectively negotiate the international terrain. Intended Audience: This text is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in International Public Relations. In addition, it is an excellent supplemental text for courses such as Public Relations Theory, Public Relations Campaigns, Public Relations Planning and Management, and Public Relations Case Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no longer the case that it’s only society which benefits from CSR actions. A corporation actually helps itself when operating sustainably and does well because of its triple bottom line actions. The editors of People, Planet and Profit believe that whilst Corporate Social Responsibility is by now a familiar concept to academics or practitioners, insufficient attention has been paid to the end product of CSR in practice, which they define in terms of social and economic developmental effect. The contributions in this edited volume explain the developmental aspect of CSR from a conceptual perspective and provide empirical evidence of the impact of CSR delivery on stakeholders in different corners of the World. The emphasis is on what corporations take from and give back to their stakeholders whilst trying to behave in a corporately responsible fashion. Stakeholders, including employees, customers, host communities, governments and NGOs have diverse interests and expectations of CSR. This gives rise to questions about whether the activities corporations support are the ones today’s stakeholders need; whether the CSR programmes being delivered are adequate; and about the relationship between the corporations’ view of what constitutes CSR and that of the supposed beneficiaries. This book offers thoughtful answers to these questions and assesses the outcomes of corporate activities both in developed and developing countries and regions, in terms of economic progress and social and political advancement.

Book excerpt: Huawei Goes Global provides a much-needed, comprehensive, and scholarly examination of the business environment and the striving global operations of China’s technology giant. With theoretical research, case studies, data analysis, and empirical studies, this two-volume work tells a fascinating story of internationalization in an emerging economy. As one of the most powerful Chinese companies in the global economy, the largest global telecommunications-equipment producer and a leading consumer-electronics manufacturer, Huawei is a great example of the globalization of the Chinese enterprises in the twenty-first century. In Volume I, scholars critically examine the rise of Huawei as a Chinese global enterprise from the political economy and public policy perspectives, as well as Huawei’s development strategies, innovations, and talent management. In Volume II, multiple authors carefully study the growth of Huawei from regional and geopolitical perspectives, and its corporate communication and crisis management. Within the framework of the trade conflicts between China and the US, controversies over economic sanctions, intellectual-property disputes, and espionage and cyber security concerns, this groundbreaking work makes an important contribution to both academic literature and the ongoing public discourse on Huawei. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Economic developments of the last several decades have changed the economic and social structures of industrialized and developing countries, leading to new business opportunities but also to terrifying social dangers and rising ecological catastrophes worldwide. Multinationals are increasingly expected by their stakeholders to find strategies and ways to respond to these international challenges, to play a more active role in addressing social issues, and to take responsibility for their actions in developing countries. It is the task of public relations practitioners to balance these societal demands and stakeholders expectations with the goals of their company and to communicate in an effective manner by developing socially responsible strategies. The effectiveness of strategies and communication programs depends on how public relations practitioners communicate with their stakeholders and on how much effort they make to build and maintain good relationships. To guarantee good relations and effective campaigns, the public relations function must be involved in the overall strategic management process where public relations strategies can be managed by objectives. Furthermore, public relations practitioners have to employ two-way symmetrical communication, to facilitate mutual understanding and relationship-building between their corporation and its stakeholders. Corporations can react to societal demands by using corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a public relations strategy. CSR can be considered either as an opportunity to improve a corporation s image and financial success or as a response to arising conflicts and crises. Both strategic approaches are discussed in this study, as, in practice, corporations respond to issues (proactive) but also have to deal with crises (reactive). Today, many corporations use CSR proactively, as they are aware of its various positive outcomes and valuable contributions for both society and its business success. Corporations can act with altruistic or self-interested motives, but, whichever motivation establishes the basis for CSR, both require the employment of issues management, a strategic planning process that analyses the impact of societal issues and gives corporations the chance to invest effectively and proactively. Corporations can contribute to societal demands in three ways: first, by making cash and in-kind donations to public charities; secondly they can support [...]
