This book was released on 2016 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased concerns over the limited sources of energy and environmental impact of the petroleum-based transportation infrastructure have led to increasing interest in an electric transportation infrastructure. Thus, electrical vehicles (including electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)) and related issues have gained a great deal of attention. Battery technology and battery management is a key component in this regard and has indeed remained as a central challenge in vehicle electrification. This thesis deals with monitoring and control of Lithium ion batteries. The objective is to provide novel solutions to some of the challenging issues from a control theoretic perspective. The research stream in this thesis is headed towards three general directions, i.e. monitoring, diagnostics, and control. The proposed monitoring approaches are introduced as model-based and data-based approaches. The main objective in model-based approaches is to employ the high-fidelity physics-based models of the battery for monitoring. In this thesis, two particle-filtering methods are proposed for state, and joint state and parameter estimation of such models. The data based approaches try to come up with new ideas to monitor the battery accurately but with minimum computational load. In this regard, two different approaches are considered. A Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model is developed for Li-ion battery where by the virtue of multiple-model structure of T-S model, the non-linearities of battery dynamics and corresponding parameters can appropriately be accounted for, while keeping the local models linear and easy-to-implement control/estimation algorithms. As a completely different alternative, the "Dynamic Resistance" concept is introduced that is sensitive to the battery state of charge and aging. This parameter considers changes in states of active materials in the cell during charge and discharge as well as overall interface resistances that may develop during cell aging. It can bring a new dimension to battery monitoring by providing a new easy-to-monitor parameter where the aging of the battery is also taken into account. This parameter is modeled versus the state of charge and total power throughput of the battery using a Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) neural network and the model is used to monitor the state of charge and state of health of the battery. A reliable fault diagnosis system for batteries can play an important role in enhanced performance and reliability of electric-based transportation. In this thesis, the physics of the problem is rather comprehensively reviewed, and some of the proposed models for failure mechanism are presented and some fault-detection algorithms for some common failure mechanism are developed. Finally, over-charge/discharge of the cells within a battery pack can affect the battery's health significantly, and would pose serious safety concerns as well. Thus, a cell balancing circuit is usually employed in battery packs in order to keep all the cells in balance. In this thesis, the control problem of a cell-balancing circuit, which is essentially a switched hybrid system, is addressed in a model-based framework by proposing a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) strategy.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on developing and experimentally validating model based control techniques to enhance the operation of lithium ion batteries, safely. An overview of the contributions to address the challenges that arise are provided below. Chapter 1: This chapter provides an introduction to battery fundamentals, models, and control and estimation techniques. Additionally, it provides motivation for the contributions of this dissertation. Chapter 2: This chapter examines reference governor (RG) methods for satisfying state constraints in Li-ion batteries. Mathematically, these constraints are formulated from a first principles electrochemical model. Consequently, the constraints explicitly model specific degradation mechanisms, such as lithium plating, lithium depletion, and overheating. This contrasts with the present paradigm of limiting measured voltage, current, and/or temperature. The critical challenges, however, are that (i) the electrochemical states evolve according to a system of nonlinear partial differential equations, and (ii) the states are not physically measurable. Assuming available state and parameter estimates, this chapter develops RGs for electrochemical battery models. The results demonstrate how electrochemical model state information can be utilized to ensure safe operation, while simultaneously enhancing energy capacity, power, and charge speeds in Li-ion batteries. Chapter 3: Complex multi-partial differential equation (PDE) electrochemical battery models are characterized by parameters that are often difficult to measure or identify. This parametric uncertainty influences the state estimates of electrochemical model-based observers for applications such as state-of-charge (SOC) estimation. This chapter develops two sensitivity-based interval observers that map bounded parameter uncertainty to state estimation intervals, within the context of electrochemical PDE models and SOC estimation. Theoretically, this chapter extends the notion of interval observers to PDE models using a sensitivity-based approach. Practically, this chapter quantifies the sensitivity of battery state estimates to parameter variations, enabling robust battery management schemes. The effectiveness of the proposed sensitivity-based interval observers is verified via a numerical study for the range of uncertain parameters. Chapter 4: This chapter seeks to derive insight on battery charging control using electrochemistry models. Directly using full order complex multi-partial differential equation (PDE) electrochemical battery models is difficult and sometimes impossible to implement. This chapter develops an approach for obtaining optimal charge control schemes, while ensuring safety through constraint satisfaction. An optimal charge control problem is mathematically formulated via a coupled reduced order electrochemical-thermal model which conserves key electrochemical and thermal state information. The Legendre-Gauss-Radau (LGR) pseudo-spectral method with adaptive multi-mesh-interval collocation is employed to solve the resulting nonlinear multi-state optimal control problem. Minimum time charge protocols are analyzed in detail subject to solid and electrolyte phase concentration constraints, as well as temperature constraints. The optimization scheme is examined using different input current bounds, and an insight on battery design for fast charging is provided. Experimental results are provided to compare the tradeoffs between an electrochemical-thermal model based optimal charge protocol and a traditional charge protocol. Chapter 5: Fast and safe charging protocols are crucial for enhancing the practicality of batteries, especially for mobile applications such as smartphones and electric vehicles. This chapter proposes an innovative approach to devising optimally health-conscious fast-safe charge protocols. A multi-objective optimal control problem is mathematically formulated via a coupled electro-thermal-aging battery model, where electrical and aging sub-models depend upon the core temperature captured by a two-state thermal sub-model. The Legendre-Gauss-Radau (LGR) pseudo-spectral method with adaptive multi-mesh-interval collocation is employed to solve the resulting highly nonlinear six-state optimal control problem. Charge time and health degradation are therefore optimally traded off, subject to both electrical and thermal constraints. Minimum-time, minimum-aging, and balanced charge scenarios are examined in detail. Sensitivities to the upper voltage bound, ambient temperature, and cooling convection resistance are investigated as well. Experimental results are provided to compare the tradeoffs between a balanced and traditional charge protocol. Chapter 6: This chapter provides concluding remarks on the findings of this dissertation and a discussion of future work.

Accurate knowledge and control of cell temperatures in a pack helps the battery management system (BMS) to maximize cell utilization and ensure pack safety and service life. In a pack with arrays of cells, a cells temperature is not only affected by its own thermal characteristics but also by its neighbors, the cooling system and pack configuration, which increase the noise level and the complexity of cell temperatures prediction. This work proposes to model lithium ion packs thermal behavior using a multi-node thermal network model, which predicts the cell temperatures by zones. The model was parametrized and validated using commercial lithium-ion battery packs. neighbors, the cooling system and pack configuration, which increase the noise level and the complexity of cell temperatures prediction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Technology Development Program is currently evaluating the performance of the second generation of lithium-ion cells (i.e., Gen 2 cells). Both the Gen 2 Baseline and Variant C cells are tested in accordance with the cell-specific test plan, and are removed at roughly equal power fade increments and sent for destructive diagnostic analysis. The diagnostic laboratories did not need all test cells for analysis, and returned five spare cells to the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). INEEL used these cells for special pulse testing at various duty cycles, amplitudes, and durations to investigate the usefulness of the lumped parameter model (LPM) as a predictive tool in a battery status monitor (BSM). The LPM is a simplified linear model that accurately predicts the voltage response during certain pulse conditions. A database of parameter trends should enable dynamic predictions of state-of-charge and state-of-health conditions during in-vehicle pulsing. This information could be used by the BSM to provide accurate information to the vehicle control system.
