Adsorption-based AWH uses adsorbent materials to collect water vapor from the air, the advantage being that the adsorbents can be regenerated by low-grade thermal sources, and condensation can occur at ambient temperatures. It has the potential to be more widely applicable to areas which are facing water scarcity because it can operate in areas with consistently low relative humidity (RH), where traditional approaches such as dewing and fog harvesting aren't feasible. Previous work in this area has demonstrated AWH driven by direct solar heating in low RH conditions (10 - 40%). However, water harvesting productivity, LMD (liters of water harvested per square meter solar receiver area per day), of these devices is limited by vapor transport in packed adsorbent layers, which severely limits adsorbent layer thickness. Additionally, the heat flux which must be rejected at the condenser is significant and consists of both heat conducted through the device and the latent heat of condensation. In this thesis, we present a new configuration for a solar-thermal adsorption-based AWH device which uses two stages (TS-AWH) to increase the LMD over single-stage devices. The TS-AWH device uses the latent heat of condensation from the top stage as well as a temperature gradient between the stages to drive desorption of the bottom stage. This configuration provides greater utilization of the solar energy received at the absorber, recycling of the latent heat, and takes full advantage of the temperature difference between the solar absorber and the condenser. We present our framework for modeling heat and mass transport in adsorbent layers and use this model to design layers which can be incorporated in AWH systems for passive operation on a daily cycle. We developed a model of the TS-AWH system which predicts that both layers can be desorbed under unconcentrated sunlight. We used AQSOA zeolites ZO1 and Z02 for the adsorbents and our characterizations showed that they exhibit favorable properties for AWH, including fast intracrystalline kinetics. Based on insight gained from parametric studies of the effect of geometric parameters on LMD, we built and tested a prototype using ZO1 in outdoor water harvesting experiments on the MIT roof, where we showed solar-driven regeneration using unconcentrated sunlight. We demonstrated the validity of the TS-AWH concept by achieving a higher LMD than the maximum performance of a single-stage device, showing the promise of using TS-AWH to increase the performance of solar-thermal adsorption-based AWH systems. Our device demonstrates progress towards scaling up solar-thermal AWHs, as we harvested 80x more water than our previous device under similar, unconcentrated solar flux conditions.

Book excerpt: Water scarcity is a grand global challenge since more than two-thirds of world's population is experiencing water shortage. Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) addresses this challenge by enabling decentralized freshwater supply in water-stressed and infrastructure-limited areas. Adsorption-based AWH, in particular, overcomes the climate limitations of conventional AWH technologies and has the potential to further expand clean water access to extremely arid regions. Despite innovations in adsorbent materials, however, fundamental understanding of the physical processes involved in the AWH cycle and how material properties impact the theoretical limits of AWH are lacking. In this thesis, we develop a generalized thermodynamic framework to elucidate the interplay between adsorbent properties and operating conditions for optimal AWH performance. Our analysis considers the temperature-dependence of adsorption, which is critical but has been largely overlooked in past work. Using metal-organic framework (MOF) as an example, we show that the peak energy efficiencies of single-stage and dual-stage AWH devices, after considering temperature-dependent adsorption, increased by 30% and 100% compared with previous work. Moreover, in contrast to common understanding, we show that the adsorption enthalpy of MOFs can also be optimized and further improve the peak energy efficiency by 40%. To guide the practical design of next-generation adsorption-based AWH devices, we also perform initial modeling and characterization of select subcomponents for enhanced device performance. For atmospheric air delivery, we show that both the Dyson V9 motor fan and miniature drone propellers are powerful and compact solutions. However, after taking the power consumption into account, we identify the Noctua industrial DC fan as the best candidate overall for air supply. In addition, we show that significant heat sink enhancement is needed to maintain the condenser at close to ambient temperature and sustain the high flux of vapor condensation prescribed by high water productivity. This work bridges important knowledge gaps between adsorbent materials development and device design, providing insights toward high-performance adsorption-based AWH technologies.

Conventional vapor compression, thermoelectric cooling, dew, and fog water harvesting based systems/technologies possess some limits in terms of energy requirements, less efficiency, and high cost. However, the adsorption based AWH technology is relatively cheaper, environment friendly, and can be operated by a low-grade thermal energy source. The limited availability of commercial instruments to harvest atmospheric water using adsorbents indicates a lack of fundamental studies. The fundamental research on water adsorption, adsorption kinetics, regeneration conditions, and water collecting surface designs has not gained as much interest as required in the field of atmospheric water harvesting. Recent analyses found that deploying NETs may be less expensive and less disruptive than reducing some emissions, such as a substantial portion of agricultural and land-use emissions and some transportation emissions. In 2015, the National Academies published Climate Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration, which described and initially assessed NETs and sequestration technologies. This report acknowledged the relative paucity of research on NETs and recommended development of a research agenda that covers all aspects of NETs from fundamental science to full-scale deployment. Recent advances in porous adsorbents such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with high sorption capacity and low regeneration temperature requirements, allow us to efficiently utilize them for these applications. However, detailed experimental and theoretical frameworks for the use of advanced sorbents have not considered several important aspects (e.g., inter/intracrystalline diffusion kinetics). This thesis provides a generalized framework to select the materials, design, and develop sorption-based energy and water systems. First, this thesis presents the design and demonstration of a device based on porous MOF-801 [Zr 6O4(OH) 4(fumarate)6] powered by natural sunlight (solar-thermal) that captures water from the atmosphere at ambient conditions, down to 20% RH. Under these conditions, operation of competing technologies, such as dew-based atmospheric water generators (AWGs), is infeasible. Laboratory experiments and computational simulations were used to optimize the device based on this MOF to maximize water delivery capacity in arid climates. We subsequently tested an optimized device in an exceptionally arid climate with 10-40% RH and sub-zero dew points. With a solar flux with 1.8x concentration for desorption, we demonstrated the operation of our device with a thermal efficiency ~14%. Finally, we quantitatively analyzed the water quality and showed that the MOF compound was stable to water, and the metal ions and organic linkers did not leach from the framework into the harvested water. Our demonstration indicates that passive operation of sorption-based AWGs with high efficiencies (> 20%) is possible and can be operated with abundant low-grade heat sources (~100°C) under exceptionally dry climates of RH

In this review, we summarize the types of porous adsorbents used in psaAWH and provide an overview of their states of development. The water adsorption mechanism and the processes associated with each material are analyzed, and the application prospects of the adsorbents are evaluated. The effect of the inherent properties (pore size, functional group, etc.) of the adsorbent on the water harvesting performance is also discussed. Further, we focus on the water adsorption/desorption kinetics of the adsorbents and outline various methods to improve the kinetics. At this stage, there are many strategies for improving the kinetics of the adsorbent, which in turn influences the adsorption process and intra/inter-crystalline diffusion. However, there is still limited research on the transport of water molecules in microporous adsorbents for psaAWH. Thus, this aspect is re-examined herein from a new perspective (superfluidity) in the review. Based on the discussion, we can reasonably infer that water molecule superfluidity can exist in nanoconfined channels, thus promoting the rapid transport of water molecules. The formation of water superfluidity is a feasible strategy for improving the intracrystalline diffusion of the psaAWH adsorbent. Finally, we consider the future developments and challenges of psaAWH in detail. We think this review can serve as a guide for further research in this ever-expanding field.

With the growth in the number of industries, the waste generated is also growing exponentially. The various chemical processes operating in the manufacturing industry generate a large number of by-products, which are largely harmful and toxic pollutants and are generally discharged into the natural water bodies. Once the pollutants enter the environment, they are taken up by different life forms, and because of bio-magnification, they affect the entire food chain and have severe adverse effects on all life forms, including on human health. Although, various physico-chemical and biological approaches are available for the removal of toxic pollutants, unfortunately these are often ineffective and traditional clean up practices are inefficient. Biological approaches utilizing microorganisms (bacterial/fungi/algae), green plants or their enzymes to degrade or detoxify environmental pollutants such as endocrine disruptors, toxic metals, pesticides, dyes, petroleum hydrocarbons and phenolic compounds, offer eco- friendly approaches.
