Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment may surround us, but when that environment is a natural wonder like Yosemite National Park, it also reaches what’s inside us. For Mark Liebenow, Yosemite did just that, and did so when he needed it most. In Mountains of Light, winner of the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize, Liebenow takes us deep into the heart of this wilderness, introducing us to its grand and subtle marvels—and to the observations, reflections, and insights its scenery evokes. Acting as our guide, Liebenow calls on the spirit and legacy of naturalist John Muir to rediscover nature and recover his own exuberance for life. Whether celebrating the giant sequoias, massive granite mountains, and wild, untamed rivers, or losing himself on an unmarked trail, Liebenow is always accompanied by thoughts of his wife of eighteen years, whose recent and sudden death tempers and informs his journey. Interwoven with his experiences are the stories of the Native Americans who lived in the valley for thousands of years and of the early settlers who followed. Melding documentary with introspection, environmental reportage with a search for meaning, Liebenow’s work draws on the lore of geology, botany, biology, and history to show how each aspect of the environment is connected to the rest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains is a travel book, by Isabella Bird, describing her 1873 trip to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The book is a compilation of letters that Isabella Bird wrote to her sister, Henrietta. In 1872, Isabella left Britain, going first to Australia, then to Hawaii, which she refers to as the Sandwich Islands. In 1873 she travelled to Colorado, then the Colorado Territory. After living a time in Hawaii, she takes a boat, to San Francisco. She passed the area of Lake Tahoe, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to ultimate Estes Park, Colorado, also elsewhere in and near the Rocky Mountains of the Colorado Territory. Early in Colorado, she met Rocky Mountain Jim, described as a desperado, but with whom she got along quite well. She described him as, "He is a man whom any woman might love but no sane woman would marry." She was the first white woman to stand atop Longs Peak, Colorado, pointing out that Jim "dragged me up, like a bale of goods, by sheer force of muscle." Rocky Mountain Jim treated her quite well, and it is sad to note, he was shot to death, seven months later. After many other adventures, Isabella Bird ultimately took a train, east. Upon publication, A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains proved an "instant bestseller" and is still considered to be her best work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James called John Burroughs (1837–1921) "a more humorous, more available, and more sociable Thoreau." Walt Whitman in turn extolled Burroughs as "a child of the woods, fields, hills—native to them in a rare sense (in a sense almost a miracle)." Throughout his many books and essays, Burroughs was never more eloquent on nature themes than when writing about his native countryside: the woods, streams, and mountains of the Catskills in New York. In the Catskills collects the very best of Burroughs's writings about his birthplace in a book that is sure to be treasured by all lovers of the region as well as lovers of the literature of nature. This new edition includes an introduction by Burroughs biographer Edward Renehan and an additional work not included in previous editions, entitled My Boyhood.

Book excerpt: The story of ‘The Mountains Within’ is prototypical of the people who grew into first-ever consciousness of their own identities from the obscurity of innumerable socio-cultural microcosms that had existed at the subterranean level for centuries and millennia over the length and breadth of India before the Independence. The story moves from present to past to future with the main protagonist’s grand-daughter setting out to reconstruct the life story of her grand-father she admires. The story is contemporary and relevant to a whole lot of Indians who finished their journeys of existence at the beginning of the new millennium. As they sit back, vacuous and dazed after the ‘retirement’, they cannot help ruminating over the past vis-à-vis their own lives. No matter how objective their self-appraisal, they cannot escape being dubbed a generation of ineffectual crusaders who fell from grace by succumbing to hypocrisies both personal and collective. They cannot exonerate themselves from the stigma of making a mess of a newly liberated country through moral turpitude and lack of individual will. They cannot face up to the younger generation of today and convince them they had no role to play in the fabrication of myths such ‘Mera Bharat Mahaan’. There are no Nuremberg Trials for the crimes we commit within our minds and souls. However, if history is continuity between the past and the present, then ‘The Mountains Within’ does leave some doors open for Nuremberg Trials of the mind and the souls for these Indians.
