The fictitious hero of this 1984 installation is a lonely dreamer who develops an impossible project: to fly alone in cosmic space. But this dream is also an individual appropriation of a collective Soviet project and the official Soviet propaganda connected to it. Having built a makeshift slingshot, the hero apparently flies through the ceiling of his shabby room and vanishes into space. The miserable room and the primitive slingshot suggest the reality behind the Soviet utopia, in which where cosmic vision and the political project of the Communist revolution are seen as indissoluble. The Man who Flew into Space from His Apartment also raises questions of authorship in modernity. All of Kabakov's work is made in the name of other, fictitious artists. This reveals a hidden rule of the modern art system: only an artist who doesn't want to be an artist or who doesn't even know that he is an artist is a real artist—just as only an artwork that does not look like an artwork is a real artwork. Book excerpt: During the 1960s and 1970s, the Russian conceptual artist Ilya Kabakov was a galvanizing figure in Moscow's underground art community, ultimately gaining international prominence as the “leader” of a band of artists known as the Moscow Conceptual Circle. Throughout this time, he created texts that he would distribute among his friends, and by the late 1990s his written production amounted to hundreds of pages. Devoted to themes that range from the “cosmism” of pre-Revolutionary Russian modernism to the philosophical implications of Moscow’s garbage, Kabakov’s handmade booklets were typed out on paper, then stapled or sewn together using rough butcher paper for their covers. Among these writings are faux Socialist Realist verses, theoretical explorations, art historical analyses, accompaniments to installation projects, and transcripts of dialogues between the artist and literary theorists, critics, journalists, and other artists. This volume offers for the first time in English the most significant texts written by Kabakov. The writings have been expressly selected for this English-language volume and there exists no equivalent work in any language.

Book excerpt: Late Soviet underground art evolved without access to public exhibition spaces, public audience or independent criticism. Those roles were played by the artists themselves, while the spaces were commonly provided by their private apartments. It was often there that art was produced, displayed, discussed and stored. This dissertation examines the stakes of such commingling of art and domestic space. In particular, it focuses on the role of materiality (in this case, domestic materiality) in Moscow Conceptualism by examining its many forms and aspects, such as the materials of artworks, the material context in which they operated, and the bodily aspect of art interaction. By doing so, this dissertation attempts to introduce Moscow Conceptualism to the scholarly debates about the role of materiality in Conceptual art. The study argues that Moscow Conceptualism reveals an original model of dealing with material objects grounded in socialist materiality, and therefore provides us with new lenses for looking at the presumably "dematerialized" world of conceptualism. The dissertation focuses on the case study of Andrei Monastyrski, one of the leaders of Moscow Conceptualism, whose art, as this study claims, demonstrates a particular interest in the material aspect of late Soviet everyday life. The discussion presents three art projects produced by Monastyrski in 1975-1985, that is a series of artist's books, a series of interactive art objects, and a series of actions conducted in his private apartment. Rather than assuming an artist's apartment as a necessary escape place which confers on it a problematic nature of an independent island of freedom, this study approaches the late Soviet private apartment and its domestic materiality as both a part of the ideological discourse and an integral component of unofficial art making. By employing an interdisciplinary approach, the study analyzes Monastyrski's art series in relation to the normative practices of late Soviet everyday life, such as reading at home, writing a diary, engaging in routine domestic activities, gathering with friends and talking. Such contextualization allows to bring forward Monastyrski's strategies of dismantling the official narratives about the ideal Soviet person. By focusing on the interactivity of Monastyrski's art projects, the dissertation brings forward the viewers' emotional, sensory and cognitive responses to artworks which tested the affective power of socialist things and spaces, developed already in the early Soviet discourse on art and material culture.

Using archival research, interviews with major artists and publishers, and close readings of several works, Komiks: Comic Art in Russia provides heretofore unavailable access to the country's rich—but unknown—comics heritage. The study examines the dizzying experimental comics of the late Czarist and early revolutionary era, caricature from the satirical journal Krokodil, and the postwar series Petia Ryzhik (the “Russian Tintin”). Detailed case studies include the Perestroika-era KOM studio, the first devoted to comics in the Soviet Union; post-Soviet comics in contemporary art; autobiography and the work of Nikolai Maslov; and women's comics by such artists as Lena Uzhinova, Namida, and Re-I. Alaniz examines such issues as anti-Americanism, censorship, the rise of consumerism, globalization (e.g., in Russian manga), the impact of the internet, and the hard-won establishment of a comics subculture in Russia Komiks have often borne the brunt of ideological change—thriving in summers of relative freedom, freezing in hard winters of official disdain. This volume covers the art form's origins in religious icon-making and book illustration, and later the immensely popular lubok or woodblock print. Alaniz reveals comics' vilification and marginalization under the Communists, the art form's economic struggles, and its eventual internet “migration” in the post-Soviet era. This book shows that Russian comics, as with the people who made them, never had a “normal life.”
