Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book one of the world's leading Hellenists brings together his many contributions over four decades to our understanding of early Greek literature, above all of elegiac poetry and its relation to fifth-century prose historiography, but also of early Greek epic, iambic, melic and epigrammatic poetry. Many chapters have become seminal, e.g. that which first proposed the importance of now-lost long narrative elegies, and others exploring their performance contexts when papyri published in 1992 and 2005 yielded fragments of such long poems by Simonides and Archilochus. Another chapter argues against the widespread view that Sappho composed and performed chiefly for audiences of young girls, suggesting instead that she was a virtuoso singer and lyre-player, entertaining men in the elite symposia whose verbal and musical components are explored in several other chapters of the book. Two more volumes of collected papers will follow devoted to later Greek literature and culture.

Book Synopsis Literature in the Greek and Roman Worlds by : Oliver Taplin
Download or read book Literature in the Greek and Roman Worlds written by Oliver Taplin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book--its new perspective--is on the 'receivers' of literature: readers, spectators, and audiences. Twelve contributors, drawn from both sides of the Atlantic, explore the various and changing interactions between the makers of literature and their audiences or readers from the earliest Greek poetry to the end of the Roman empires in the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. From the heights of Athens to the hellenistic Greek diaspora, from the great Augustans to the irresistible tide of Christianity, the contributors deploy fresh insights to map out lively and provocative, yet accessible, surveys. They cover the kinds of literature which have shaped western culture--epic, lyric, tragedy, comedy, history, philosophy, rhetoric, epigram, elegy, pastoral, satire, biography, epistle, declamation, and panegyric. Who were the audiences, and why did they regard their literature as so important? --jacket.

Download or read book Logoi and Muthoi written by William Wians and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Logoi and Muthoi, William Wians builds on his earlier volume Logos and Muthos, highlighting the richness and complexity of these terms that were once set firmly in opposition to one another as reason versus myth or rationality versus irrationality. It was once common to think of intellectual history representing a straightforward progression from mythology to rationality. These volumes, however, demonstrate the value of taking the two together, opening up and analyzing a range of interactions, reactions, tensions, and ambiguities arising between literary and philosophical forms of discourse, including philosophical themes in works not ordinarily considered in the canon of Greek philosophical texts. This new volume considers such topics as the pre-philosophical origins of Anaximander's calendar, the philosophical significance of public performance and claims of poetic inspiration, and the complex role of mythic figures (including perhaps Socrates) in Plato. Taken together, the essays offer new approaches to familiar texts and open up new possibilities for understanding the roles and relationships between muthos and logos in ancient Greek thought.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Greek Literature I harboured for many years the project of producing these five Essays on Greek together with others on Latin and English Literature; but I have been advised on good authority that such a collection would be incongruous and unacceptable. I had thought of endeavouring to bring the studies more up-to-date; but in some cases there seemed little to add, and in others such an attempt would have run counter to the original design. In reference to the first Essay I venture to think that Professor Bury's arguments against the nomic basis of Pindar's Odes of Victory, ' though brilliant like all the work of that most versatile and eminent scholar, are not convincing. The Essay has to a great extent dealt with them in anticipation; while. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Greek Studies written by Walter Pater and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Studies: A Series of Essays The present volume consists of a collections of essays by the late Mr. Pater, all of which have already been given to the public in various Magazines; and it is owing to the kindness of the several proprietors of those Magazines that they can now be brought together in a collected shape. It will, it is believed, be felt, that their value is considerably enhanced by their appearance in a single volume, where they can throw light upon one another, and exhibit by their connexion a more complete view of the scope and purpose of Mr. Pater in dealing with the art and literature of the ancient world. The essays fall into two distinct groups, one dealing with the subjects of Greek mythology and Greek poetry, the other with the history of Greek sculpture and Greek architecture.
