Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book one of the world's leading Hellenists brings together his many contributions over four decades to our understanding of early Greek literature, above all of elegiac poetry and its relation to fifth-century prose historiography, but also of early Greek epic, iambic, melic and epigrammatic poetry. Many chapters have become seminal, e.g. that which first proposed the importance of now-lost long narrative elegies, and others exploring their performance contexts when papyri published in 1992 and 2005 yielded fragments of such long poems by Simonides and Archilochus. Another chapter argues against the widespread view that Sappho composed and performed chiefly for audiences of young girls, suggesting instead that she was a virtuoso singer and lyre-player, entertaining men in the elite symposia whose verbal and musical components are explored in several other chapters of the book. Two more volumes of collected papers will follow devoted to later Greek literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book contains the most significant essays written by John Gould over the last thirty years (some now regarded as classics), including several not previously published. Newly revised, with reference both to corroborative material and to subsequent treatments and discussion of significantly different approaches to the same topics, these papers offer a marked coherence of focus and argument which informs the whole volume. Most of the essays arise out of the experience of teaching and address problems, puzzles, and misunderstandings encountered by students. The heart of the book is a concern with the interaction between the cultural assumptions and world-view of ancient (and often of modern) Greeks and their literature. An overriding interest in anthropological fieldwork runs through the book and helps to shape its argument."-- book jacket.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Greek Literature I harboured for many years the project of producing these five Essays on Greek together with others on Latin and English Literature; but I have been advised on good authority that such a collection would be incongruous and unacceptable. I had thought of endeavouring to bring the studies more up-to-date; but in some cases there seemed little to add, and in others such an attempt would have run counter to the original design. In reference to the first Essay I venture to think that Professor Bury's arguments against the nomic basis of Pindar's Odes of Victory, ' though brilliant like all the work of that most versatile and eminent scholar, are not convincing. The Essay has to a great extent dealt with them in anticipation; while. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The essays collected in Modern Greek Literature represent the work of young scholars as they expand the range of approaches to modern Greek literature. The contributors vary in their focus from comparative studies to the study of religion or the literature of diaspora. The theoretical questions that the essays raise address both classic and contemporary debates, from genre explorations to the relationship between literature and national identity. Each contribution to this volume represents a fresh look at Greek literature and opens a distinct pathway for further research and consideration. From this collection will arise innumerable opportunities to gain a newer and deeper understanding of a great literary tradition.

Book excerpt: The Professor Emeritus of Greek at Berkeley offers six original papers, the titles of which are indicative of the contents: - The Alleged Battle of Oinoa. - The General's Exhortations in Greek Warfare. - The General on the Battlefield. - Thucydides and Pylos. - The Roads of Akarnania. - Circumventions of the Thermopylai Pass. These studies are a by-product of Pritchett's studies on Greek military practices and Greek topography, and will be of interest to students of Greek historiography, since all involve problems of text and the veracity of the historians. The three topographical chapters, which are based on extensive autopsy and include some new discoveries, are accompanied with photographs and sketchmaps.

The past, for all its alienness, affects and changes the present.'The focus of this book - its new perspective - is on the 'receivers' of literature: readers, spectators, and audiences. Six contributors, drawn from both sides of the Atlantic, explore the various and changing interactions between the makers of literature and their audiences or readers from theearliest Greek poetry through to the drama, history, and philosophy of Greece under Roman rule. The contributors deploy fresh insights to map out lively and provocative, yet accessible, surveys. They cover the kinds of literature which have shaped western culture - epic, lyric, tragedy, comedy, history, philosophy, rhetoric, epigram, elegy, pastoral, satire, biography, epistle, declamation, and panegyric. Who were the audiences, and why did they regard their literature as so important?
