Book excerpt: Successor to Twain's first collection of travel memoirs takes a second look at Europe. In "A Tramp Abroad," Twain's abundant humor waxes as freely as ever; this time, however, his amusement bears a more cynical cast, as he regards the grand tourist sights of Innocents through his now older and more experienced eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second of two hardcover volumes collecting the major nonfiction by the "father of American literature," including excerpts from The Innocents Abroad, Roughing It, A Tramp Abroad, and Life on the Mississippi. Twain’s playful exuberance and remarkable storytelling gifts are on full display as he regales readers with real-life adventures in these rollicking, shrewd, and hilarious autobiographical works. In these pages, we follow him through his stint as a fledgling reporter out West to his attempt to navigate a steamboat on the Mississippi River, and all during his experiences as an irreverent and skeptical traveler through Europe and the Holy Land. Gleefully iconoclastic, whether he is puncturing the pretensions of others or aiming his satirical barbs squarely at himself, Twain also proves to be deeply compassionate, as fierce in his condemnation of injustice as he is skillful in mining the humor in human folly. Long hailed as “the Lincoln of our literature,” Twain harbored as rich and fertile a blend of contradictions as the dynamic nation he came to embody—and define.

This book will inspire kids to love the skin they're in, build self-esteem, especially "skin-esteem" and encourage self-acceptance. As parents we are our children's first role models. We need to teach our children to love and embrace who they are no matter the color of their skin. Children need to be reassured they are unique and to celebrate and accept their uniqueness - this includes everything about themselves from top to bottom and inside out. Children should be told it's okay to be different. Being different is what makes children so magnificent and amazing!

Book excerpt: Heart of Gold, this historical novel is Book Two, in Under the Canyon Sky: about the early Grand Canyon pioneers. It is the story of gold discovery, copper mines, rockslides, outlaws, beer-drinking burros, a railway on the brink, conflicting federal regulations, and badgering by a flourishing commercial tourist industry that fiercely opposes independents. Monte Bridgestone – miner, trail-builder, guide, hotel manager, and homesteader on the South Rim. He becomes emotionally attached to the Grand Canyon and advocates its protection for future generations to behold, experience and cherish. Kirby and Sabrina O’Brien – their romance springs from below the rim and their life together evolves from prospecting to ranching. They work to preserve the legacy of the canyon pioneers by planning and financing a Canyon Pioneers Museum. Clint McCarty – Monte’s mining partner until a falling out over his rampant abuse of mining laws. He opposes making the Canyon a national park and wants it all for himself. His proliferation of mining claims hinders administrative control of the Canyon. Teddy Roosevelt – in his notorious address on the South Rim, he asks that the Canyon remain void of anything manmade. He establishes Grand Canyon National Monument, and twice returns for adventurous canyon mule trips. “Follow the twists and turns of mining, politics and romance in Heart of Gold, Dick Brown's well-written continuing saga of pioneer life at the Grand Canyon. A definite page turner!” —Dr. Gary Fogel, Author and Adjunct Professor at San Diego State University The Grand Canyon’s long journey from unexplored wilderness to a great American national park involves tangled bureaucracy, greedy schemes, fraudulent mining claims, and competition between favored commercial operators and private entrepreneurs. The government’s rough start in managing this natural wonder and the pioneers conducting their own tourism enterprises create bitter conflicts that last for decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Complete Travel Writings of Mark Twain” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. It is a complete collection of Mark Twain’s travel writings – including ‘The Innocents Abroad’, ‘Roughing It’, ‘A Tramp Abroad’, ‘Following the Equator’ and ‘Some Rambling Notes of an Idle Excursion‘ - presented in a single volume. Based on a series of letters Mark Twain wrote from Europe for San Francisco and New York newspapers as a roving correspondent, The Innocents Abroad, published in 1869, is a caricature of the sentimental travel books popular in the mid-nineteenth century. Mark Twain's fresh and humorous perspective on hallowed European landmarks lacked reverence for the past, and was as mocking about American manners as it was about European attitudes. Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Clemens (1835–1910), the American author whose classic works of fiction are notable for their narrative voice, humour and social criticism.

Book excerpt: This Excellent Collection brings together Mark Twain's longer, major books and a fine selection of shorter pieces and Science-Fiction Books. This Books created and collected in Mark Twain's Most important Works illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of the XX century - a man who elevated political writing to an art. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name "Mark Twain", was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise.[5] His humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into French.[6] His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—such as the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but in time overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He eventually paid all his creditors in full, even though his bankruptcy relieved him of having to do so. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet made its closest approach to the Earth.
