Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Montana's ranger stations spans most of the 20th century. From small isolated cabins to larger facilities with residences, bunkhouses, cookhouses and offices these were the Forest Service's bases of operation. As the work of the Forest Service expanded in location and complexity, ranger stations were developed to meet the needs of the workforce. Sometimes off the beaten path and sometimes an integral part of rural communities these facilities are a part of Montana's heritage. Some are long gone, some forgotten, and others are still in use. Their architecture is functional and mostly rustic. Many Forest Service retirees worked at these remote locations with out running water, electricity or regular mail service. This book will hopefully provide a bit of history about Montana's ranger stations and the people who lived and worked there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North, Middle, and South Forks of the Flathead River drain some of the wildest country in Montana, including Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. In Rangers, Trappers, and Trailblazers, John Fraley recounts the true adventures of people who earned their living among the mountains and along the cold, clear rivers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Here are the stories of the intrepid Glacier Park Ranger Clyde Fauley and his young family using a cable bucket to reach their isolated cabin across the Middle Fork, trapper Slim Link’s fateful meeting with a grizzly bear in the deep woods of the North Fork, and the life and times of Henry Thol, “the ranger’s ranger,” who happily snowshoed hundreds of miles through deep snows and minus-40 cold to patrol the South Fork wilderness. Tragedies and near-misses abound: a fatal shootout, tangles with bears and packrats, a devastating train wreck, and a missing airplane. But these are balanced with tales of courage, endurance, and remarkable personal achievement. Fraley tells all in intriguing detail wrested from primary sources.

Having sustained a shrapnel wound to the leg, his continued military service is up before a medical review board. A chance meeting in the airport with the woman he’d seduced on his last trip home makes him want to launch a mission to rekindle their desire. But if the military boots him out, he’ll be jobless and unable to support himself or anyone else that comes along. Fiona Guthrie left Eagle Rock, Montana after a short-lived love affair with the one guy she’d never stopped loving. Relegated to the friend-zone in high school, she’d given up hope on Duncan McKinnon until one fateful night when he’d been home on leave. Their one-night stand only reinforced the fact Duncan was the only man for her and the baby created from their short union. Now she’s back in Eagle Rock, running for her life and the life of their baby girl. She needs his help to save herself and their daughter from someone who wants them dead. When Duncan learns Fiona and her little girl are in trouble, he vows to protect them with his life, not quite understanding the incredible connection he has to the little girl who looks nothing like Fiona and more like him. The threat plaguing Fiona might just expose a connection to the McKinnon brothers’ missing father.

Book excerpt: Home In The Woods: Montana's Westside Ranger StationsThe second of two volumes, A Home in the Woods: Montana's Westside Ranger Stations covers the history of Forest Service ranger stations west of the Continental Divide on the Kootenai, Flathead, Lolo, and Bitterroot National Forests. These facilities range from small backcountry guard stations in the Bob Marshall Wilderness to small district headquarters to extensive facilities such as the Spotted Bear Ranger Station, with housing for staff as well as seasonal crews and about 80 head of pack stock for use in the backcountry. Isolated Forest Service facilities often served as the center of civilization for remote areas such as the North Fork of the Flathead or the Yaak River Valley. The Forest Service provided employment, and the timber industry was the base of the local economy for many of these areas. Many of these facilities are long gone and forgotten, some have been preserved and are in the Forest Service cabin rental program, while others are still in use as district headquarters and backcountry guard stations. This book provides information about Forest Service facilities and will help preserve information that all too often gets thrown out during an office cleanup day.

Rangers managed the public forests and ranges with the cattlemen, sheepmen, lumbermen, miners, homesteaders, and others who used--and, in many cases, still use-- the lands to build and sustain economies and ways of life. The early rangers are no longer around. But some of the stations from which they protected the West's national forests to secure "the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run," as decreed by the first chief of the US Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot, remain to tell their stories and inspire their successors.
