Book Synopsis Applications of Automata Theory and Algebra by : John L. Rhodes
Download or read book Applications of Automata Theory and Algebra written by John L. Rhodes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally written in 1969 by Berkeley mathematician John Rhodes. It is the founding work in what is now called algebraic engineering, an emerging field created by using the unifying scheme of finite state machine models and their complexity to tie together many fields: finite group theory, semigroup theory, automata and sequential machine theory, finite phase space physics, metabolic and evolutionary biology, epistemology, mathematical theory of psychoanalysis, philosophy, and game theory. The author thus introduced a completely original algebraic approach to complexity and the understanding of finite systems. The unpublished manuscript, often referred to as "The Wild Book," became an underground classic, continually requested in manuscript form, and read by many leading researchers in mathematics, complex systems, artificial intelligence, and systems biology. Yet it has never been available in print until now. This first published edition has been edited and updated by Chrystopher Nehaniv for the 21st century. Its novel and rigorous development of the mathematical theory of complexity via algebraic automata theory reveals deep and unexpected connections between algebra (semigroups) and areas of science and engineering. Co-founded by John Rhodes and Kenneth Krohn in 1962, algebraic automata theory has grown into a vibrant area of research, including the complexity of automata, and semigroups and machines from an algebraic viewpoint, and which also touches on infinite groups, and other areas of algebra. This book sets the stage for the application of algebraic automata theory to areas outside mathematics. The material and references have been brought up to date bythe editor as much as possible, yet the book retains its distinct character and the bold yet rigorous style of the author. Included are treatments of topics such as models of time as algebra via semigroup theory; evolution-complexity relations applicable to both ontogeny and evolution; an approach to classification of biological reactions and pathways; the relationships among coordinate systems, symmetry, and conservation principles in physics; discussion of "punctuated equilibrium" (prior to Stephen Jay Gould); games; and applications to psychology, psychoanalysis, epistemology, and the purpose of life. The approach and contents will be of interest to a variety of researchers and students in algebra as well as to the diverse, growing areas of applications of algebra in science and engineering. Moreover, many parts of the book will be intelligible to non-mathematicians, including students and experts from diverse backgrounds.
Book Synopsis Mathematics across the Iron Curtain by : Christopher Hollings
Download or read book Mathematics across the Iron Curtain written by Christopher Hollings and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of semigroups is a relatively young branch of mathematics, with most of the major results having appeared after the Second World War. This book describes the evolution of (algebraic) semigroup theory from its earliest origins to the establishment of a full-fledged theory. Semigroup theory might be termed `Cold War mathematics' because of the time during which it developed. There were thriving schools on both sides of the Iron Curtain, although the two sides were not always able to communicate with each other, or even gain access to the other's publications. A major theme of this book is the comparison of the approaches to the subject of mathematicians in East and West, and the study of the extent to which contact between the two sides was possible.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1989, more than 700 Soviet algebraists and more than 200 foreign mathematicians convened in Novosibirsk in what was then the Soviet Union for the International Conference on Algebra. Dedicated to the memory of A.I. Mal'cev, the Russian algebraist and logician, the conference marked the first time since the International Congress of Mathematicians was held in Moscow in 1966 that Soviet algebraists could meet with a large number of their foreign colleagues. This volume contains the proceedings from this historic conference. Some of the Soviet contributors to this volume are not easily available from other sources. Some of the major figures in the field, including P.M. Cohn, P. Gabriel, N. Jacobson, E.R. Kolchin, and V. Platonov, contributed to this volume. The papers span a broad range of areas including groups, Lie algebras, associative and nonassociative rings, fields and skew fields, differential algebra, universal algebra, categories, combinatorics, logic, algebraic geometry, topology, and mathematical physics.

Book excerpt: Semigroups, Formal Languages and Groups contains articles that provide introductory accounts of recent research in rational languages and their connections with finite semigroups, including the celebrated BG=PG theorem, infinite languages, free profinite monoids and their applications to pseudovarieties, parallel complexity classes related to automata, semigroups and logic, algebraic monoids, geometric methods in semigroup presentations, automatic groups and groups acting on Lambda-trees. There is also an extensive survey of algorithmic problems in groups, semigroups and inverse monoids. In addition, the book includes hitherto unpublished research on monoids of Lie type and their representations, free actions of groups on Lambda-trees and an extension to arbitrary semigroups of the famous Krohn-Rhodes theorem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions from leading experts in the rapidly developing field of semigroup theory. The subject, now some 60 years old, began by imitating group theory and ring theory, but quickly developed an impetus of its own, and the semigroup turned out to be the most useful algebraic object in theoretical computer science.

Book Synopsis Algorithmic Problems in Groups and Semigroups by : Jean-Camille Birget

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers which are based primarily on talks given at an inter national conference on Algorithmic Problems in Groups and Semigroups held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from May ll-May 16, 1998. The conference coincided with the Centennial Celebration of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on the occasion of the one hun dredth anniversary of the granting of the first Ph.D. by the department. Funding was provided by the US National Science Foundation, the Department of Math ematics and Statistics, and the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, through the College's focus program in Discrete, Experimental and Applied Mathematics. The purpose of the conference was to bring together researchers with interests in algorithmic problems in group theory, semigroup theory and computer science. A particularly useful feature of this conference was that it provided a framework for exchange of ideas between the research communities in semigroup theory and group theory, and several of the papers collected here reflect this interac tion of ideas. The papers collected in this volume represent a cross section of some of the results and ideas that were discussed in the conference. They reflect a synthesis of overlapping ideas and techniques stimulated by problems concerning finite monoids, finitely presented mono ids, finitely presented groups and free groups.
