Much of the publics awareness is due solely to wars, and during the decade of the 1980s many scholars shifted focus away from the region. Southeast Asian Studies, Pacific Perspectives thoughtfully examines how the study of Southeast Asia has changed, and where it is heading. The sixteen papers examine Southeast Asian studies from historical, global, Asian, and American perspectives. The book suggests that the future of a different Southeast Asian studies is a bright one.

This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Goscha resituates the Vietnamese revolution and war against the French into its Asian context. Breaking with nationalist and colonial historiographies which have largely locked Vietnam into 'Indochinese' or 'Nation-state' straightjackets, Goscha takes Thailand as his point of departure for exploring how the Vietnamese revolution was intimately linked to Asia between the birth of the 'Save the King Movement' in 1885 and the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. But his study is more than just a political history. Goscha brings geography to bear on his subject with a passion. While he considers the little-known political movements of such well-known faces as Phan Boi Chau and Ho Chi Minh across Southeast Asia, the author takes us into the complex Asian networks stretching from northeastern Thailand and the port of Bangkok to southern China and Hong Kong - and beyond. There, we see how Ho and Chau drew upon an invisible army of Vietnamese and Chinese traders, criminals, prostitutes, sailors and above all the thousands of emigres living in Vietnamese communities in Thailand.

Book excerpt: Many documents have been written about the U.S. Air Force operations in Southeast Asia (SEA). However, none have given the critical in-depth coverage commensurate with our level of involvement. This volume, the first in a USAF Southeast Asia Monograph series, is an attempt to document the story or AIR POWER and the people behind it - in our nation's longest armed conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Courteous Power seeks to provide a nuanced view of the current relationship between Japan and Southeast Asia. Much of the current scholarship on East–Southeast Asian engagement has focused on the multidimensional chess game playing out between China and Japan, as the dominant post-imperialist powers. Alternatively, there has been renewed attention on ASEAN and other Southeast Asian–centered initiatives, explicitly minimizing the influence of East Asia in the region. Given the urgency of understanding the careful balance in the Indo-Pacific region, this volume brings together scholars to examine the history and current engagement from a variety of perspectives, ranging from economic and political, to the cultural and technological, while also focusing more clearly on the specific relationship between the region and Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Southeast Asian region, various communities have been closely associated with the sea. Many have, over the years, acquired special memory and, sometimes, intimate knowledge of the sea. Even as much of this information and knowledge was passed from generation to generation, it provided maritime communities with a sense of identity and social cohesiveness as well as a sense of belonging. It was in this light that the papers in this volume set out to investigate the human association with the sea in Southeast Asia through the interrogation of memory and knowledge preserved through various genres including oral tradition, travellers' tales and diaries, official accounts as well as rituals.
