Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive synthesis of all aspects of the geology of South-east Asia, a region extending from Tibet and Taiwan southward through the Malay Peninsula into the Indonesian archipelago. The region is significant as the eastern extremity of Tethyan geology and the type locality of the Triassic Indonesian Orogeny. It is also the world's foremost field laboratory for convergent and "escape" tectonics. The active plate margins are described in detail, and the past history of drifting of microcontinents from Gondwanaland is traced to their eventual collision to form Eurasia.

Book excerpt: This volume features a set of distinct, compelling, and intentionally disparate case studies that shed much needed attention on the varied ways in which local cultural, social, and political dynamics inform and mitigate the veritable roadmap toward palpable and meaningful progress with respect to enabling the goals of environmental sustainability. The volume includes contributions from notable academics – including some based in Southeast Asia - with ‘on the ground experience,’ and thus they bring a much more nuanced and locally informed orientation to their respective contributions.

Book excerpt: Southeast Asia contains some of the world's busiest shipping waters, particularly the Indonesian archipelago, the Straits of Malacca and South China Sea. The natural geography and human ecology of maritime Southeast Asia makes the area particularly apt for piracy. It is perhaps no surprise, then, that these waters are also the world's most pirate-infested, accounting for over a third of the total number of pirate attacks world-wide. The figures have increased in recent years, as transnationally organized crime syndicates have extended their activities in the area. Meanwhile, the capacity of the state authorities in the region to suppress piracy appears to have declined, fuelling suspicions that sections of the maritime authorities are colluding with some of the organized pirate gangs that they are supposed to be combating. Not surprisingly, piracy has a long history in the region, and in several instances during the last 250 years, pirates have disrupted peaceful trade and communications. This text traces the shifting character and development of Southeast Asian piracy from the 18th century to the present day, demonstrating how political, economic, social and technological factors have contributed to change - but have by no means exterminated - the phenomenon. -- Description from http://www.amazon.co.uk (Oct. 19, 2011).

Book excerpt: This book explores the reliability of official statistical data in the ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and the benefits of a better vocabulary to discuss the quality of publicly available data to address the needs of all users. It introduces a rigorous method to disaggregate and rate data quality into principal factors containing a total of ten dimensions, which serves as the basis for a discussion on the opportunities and challenges for data quality, capacity building programs and data policy in Southeast Asia. Tools to standardize and monitor statistical capacity and data quality are presented, as well as methods and data sources to analyse data quality. The book analyses data quality in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar, before concluding with thoughts on Open Data and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive introduction to the social and cultural anthropology of South-East Asia. It provides an overview of the major theoretical issues and themes which have emerged from the engagement of anthropologists with South-East Asian communities; a succinct historical survey and analysis of the peoples and cultures of the region. Most importantly the volume reveals the vitally important role which the study of the area has occupied in the development of the concepts and methods of anthropology: from the perspectives of Edmund Leach to Clifford Geertz, Maurice Freedman to Claude Levi-Strauss; Lauriston Sharp to Melford Spiro.
