Book excerpt: Monk in the Marketplace is the autobiography of Ray Simpson, founding guardian of the Community of Aidan and Hilda, much-loved author of books on Celtic spirituality, and a major influence on the new monastic movement across the world. Ray's memoir charts human pain and God incidents in his childhood and college, baptisms of fire in industrial heartlands and multi-racial London, pioneering a Village of God at Bowthorpe, Norwich, the call to be a contemplative in the market-place and to live without a salary, his co- founding of the Community of Aidan and Hilda, and twenty years as founder of the Celtic Christianity library and Open Gate Retreat House on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne ('the spiritual capital of England'). This could become a classic 'diary of a soul' and his excursions into the Simpsons are hilarious.

Book excerpt: The compelling need for modern leaders is not more breadth but more depth. Christian men and women setting the course in today's marketplace are often seduced by the do-more, do-it-faster culture that pervades our world in general and the business sector in particular...crippling their most important contribution as people of faith: spiritual authority. With compassion and insight, this book will equip modern leaders with ancient tools for knowing God deeply and extending God's rule in the marketplace and in ministry. Contemporary culture measures leadership relevance in size and charisma. The buzz shifts by the month, riding the latest book or talking head. It's not that these nuggets are without merit so much as they lack staying power. More to the point, today's Christian leaders often lack spiritual substance. I know: I was one. And what we're crying out for is a more vital connection with God, a rhythm of practice that prioritizes the secret arena over the public so as to bring deeper meaning, wisdom, and character to contemporary challenges. This "pocket edition" captures the heart of Monk in the Marketplace in a convenient size you can keep with you. For a deeper dive, go to the full version of Monk in the Marketplace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Tibetan Buddhist scriptures forbid the selling of Buddhist objects, and yet there is today a thriving market for Buddhist statues, paintings, and texts. In Buddha in the Marketplace, Alex John Catanese investigates this practice, which continues to be viewed as a form of "wrong livelihood" by modern Tibetan Buddhist scholars. Drawing on textual and historical sources, as well as ethnographic research conducted in the region of Amdo, Tibet, Catanese follows the trajectory of Buddhist objects from their status as noncommodities prior to the Cultural Revolution to their emergence as commodities on the open market in the modern period. The book examines why Tibetans have more recently begun to sell such objects for their personal livelihoods when their religious tradition condemns such business activities in the strongest possible terms. Addressing the various societal and religious ramifications of these commercial practices, Catanese illustrates how such activity is leading to significant cultural and economic changes, transforming the "moral economy" associated with Buddhist objects, and contributing to a reinterpretation of Tibetan Buddhist identity.

Book excerpt: Are you feeling weary? Overwhelmed by the scope of your leadership? Do you wonder where your work is taking you or what it’s all for? You’re not alone. Every generation reaches a point of rude awakening where what is demanded of us is more than what is given us. What we’ve been prepared for isn’t what we’re facing. What we’ve been taught is the good life really isn’t. Jerome Daley points us to ancient wisdom that long ago exposed the limits of celebrity and achievement cults: the monastic tradition. It offers not only meaning and a critique of values antithetical to a good life, but also ways of living and leading that will fill you up and dramatically increase your impact. Your leadership is meant for more; Gravitas will help you find the path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of pilgrimage often centres itself around miracles and spontaneous populist activities. While some of these activities and stories may play an important role in the emergence of potential pilgrimage sites and in helping create wider interest in them, this book demonstrates that the dynamics of the marketplace, including marketing and promotional activities by priests and secular interest groups, create the very consumerist markets through which pilgrimages become established and successful – and through which the ‘sacred’ as a category can be sustained. By drawing on examples from several contexts, including Japan, India, China, Vietnam, Europe, and the Muslim world, author Ian Reader evaluates how pilgrimages may be invented, shaped, and promoted by various interest groups. In so doing he draws attention to the competitive nature of the pilgrimage market, revealing that there are rivalries, borrowed ideas, and alliances with commercial and civil agencies to promote pilgrimages. The importance of consumerism is demonstrated, both in terms of consumer goods/souvenirs and pilgrimage site selection, rather than the usual depictions of consumerism as tawdry disjunctions on the ‘sacred.’ As such this book reorients studies of pilgrimage by highlighting not just the pilgrims who so often dominate the literature, but also the various other interest groups and agencies without whom pilgrimage as a phenomenon would not exist.

Book excerpt: A special edition of The Way of a Pilgrim and its sequel, two spiritual classics that demonstrate the profound power of the Jesus prayer This classic of world spiritual literature is the firsthand account of a pilgrim's journey as he endeavors to live out Saint Paul's instruction to “pray without ceasing.” The narrator, an unnamed nineteenth-century peasant, sets out on his pilgrimage with nothing but a Bible, a rosary, and some dried bread. As he walks, he recites the Jesus prayer (“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”)—a prayer that is said to quiet anxiety and fill the heart with love for all creation. With this prayer constantly on his lips, the pilgrim undergoes a profound spiritual education. This edition includes the sequel to The Way of a Pilgrim, entitled A Pilgrim Continues His Way, which contains a lengthy appendix reviewing the teachings of the Holy Fathers on the Jesus prayer.
