Book excerpt: Generally accepted reasons for the failure of most of the 'gold bubble' companies include over-optimism, insufficient capital, poor management, fraud and unfavourable colonial circumstances. Gold stealing and continued litigation were perhaps less obvious factors, as was the British Government's attitude. Prior to the gold rushes of the early 1850s, it appeared reluctant to regard Australia's eastern colonies as a potential source of gold, as well as pastoral wealth, despite evidence to the contrary. This official inertia contributed to the chaotic gold rushes of 1851-3, an environment that was anathema to company operations and the most common cause of their failure. The demise of virtually all of the 'gold bubble' companies discouraged further British investment in Australian gold mining until the 1880s. As a consequence, the expansion of the Victorian quartz mining industry in the early 1860s was hampered by a shortage of development capital from external colonial or overseas sources.
