Book excerpt: Coming of age in Heaven, what an exciting time! Especially since it’s every young angel’s dream to earn her wings by serving a tour in the Bureau of Angels. For everyone except Emmy Morrissey, it seems. It turns out, she and a couple of others are not quite like the rest. But Heaven has a plan for everyone—even misfits. After a bit of brief training, Emmy and her fellow oddballs are given a secret mission to run a beachside gift shop in scenic little Angel Bay. And maybe act as guardian angels for the town. Easy-peasy, right? They may even find time for their first forays into mortal romance, instead of just reading about it in steamy fiction. The hapless young angels soon find themselves up to their necks in supernatural mischief when they discover Angel Bay is ground zero for the paranormal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the warmest, funniest, and most delightful Christmas stories ever—from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dave Barry. With fond nostalgia, Dave Barry takes readers back to a simpler time: The year is 1960, and young Doug Barnes is playing a shepherd in the Christmas pageant at St. John’s Episcopal Church—which is a very big deal. But there are problems everywhere. His fellow shepherds are misbehaving, which makes their director, Mrs. Elkins, yell at all of them; the girl he likes is playing Mary opposite a Joseph who is depressingly smart, athletic, and cute; the family dog is doing very poorly, and they have no idea what they’re going to tell Doug’s little sister, Becky, who’s playing one of the Host of Angels and who loves the dog more than anything; and his dad’s just gotten a flat tire, which means they might not even get to the pageant after all. But Christmas is a time of miracles. And for Doug and his family, this will be the most miraculous Christmas of all.
Book Synopsis Angel on My Shoulder by : Harley H. Tuck, Sr.; Ann I. Clizer
Download or read book Angel on My Shoulder written by Harley H. Tuck, Sr.; Ann I. Clizer and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harley Hamilton Tuck decided when he was a teenager he wanted to leave the world a better place than it was when he got here. He flew combat during World War II as a radio operator aboard a B-17 bomber, completing twenty-seven missions before bailing out of a flaming ship over France to spend a year in Austria’s infamous Stalag 17B as a Prisoner of War. Tuck took the opportunity to begin educating himself in the field of agriculture, attended college when he returned to the States, and started teaching a few years later. Tuck took his skills around the world over the course of his career, training outreach workers among the remote Hill Tribes near the Laotian border for a decade, joining the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and relocating to Afghanistan in 1972, where he supervised a fleet of United Nations vehicles and farm equipment, working with Afghan mechanics who taught him as much as he taught them. When he accepted a UN position in Indonesia, Tuck continued training teachers, working through various programs in rural areas to improve and modernize agricultural practices. He eventually created his own Indonesian corporation to provide consulting services in his field, learning, growing, and teaching until his retirement in the late 1990s. Tuck credits the "Angel" on his shoulder for escorting him through the harrowing collection of hazards and close calls he encountered in his extensive travels. Hitch a ride from a fruit ranch in central Washington state through the fiery skies of the European War Theater, tour the back-country of Thailand, the noisy streets of Kabul and Java’s steamy jungles with Tuck for a first-class adventure with a generous-hearted and unusual man whose desire was to leave a positive mark on this world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we know about angels? Probably not as much as we think. And from the other side, what do angels know about us? They, too, are created, and work out of the Home Office, if you will. But when one of them decides he needs to know about being a child of God in a sinful world, he uses some R and R to talk to a totally surprised and skeptical human (his life-long assignment) with some surprising and imaginative results. Actually, they may talk about things we too wonder about. Remo, a Roman solider, is caught up in the crucifixion of Christ, and then witnesses His resurrection. Through his adventurous life, he seeks the reality and the meaning of the event, not sure of his experience nor its significance. His travels and battles and observations bring him to an ultimate confrontation with the truth, its eternity, and the cost.

Book Synopsis The Other End of the Leash by : Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Download or read book The Other Wes Moore written by Wes Moore and published by One World. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the governor of Maryland, the “compassionate” (People), “startling” (Baltimore Sun), “moving” (Chicago Tribune) true story of two kids with the same name: One went on to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison. The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his. In December 2000, the Baltimore Sun ran a small piece about Wes Moore, a local student who had just received a Rhodes Scholarship. The same paper also ran a series of articles about four young men who had allegedly killed a police officer in a spectacularly botched armed robbery. The police were still hunting for two of the suspects who had gone on the lam, a pair of brothers. One was named Wes Moore. Wes just couldn’t shake off the unsettling coincidence, or the inkling that the two shared much more than space in the same newspaper. After following the story of the robbery, the manhunt, and the trial to its conclusion, he wrote a letter to the other Wes, now a convicted murderer serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. His letter tentatively asked the questions that had been haunting him: Who are you? How did this happen? That letter led to a correspondence and relationship that have lasted for several years. Over dozens of letters and prison visits, Wes discovered that the other Wes had had a life not unlike his own: Both had had difficult childhoods, both were fatherless; they’d hung out on similar corners with similar crews, and both had run into trouble with the police. At each stage of their young lives they had come across similar moments of decision, yet their choices would lead them to astonishingly different destinies. Told in alternating dramatic narratives that take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a generation of boys trying to find their way in a hostile world.
