Book excerpt: An unexpected collection from Norman Mailer—a book of his selected poems and more than one hundred of his drawings, most of them never before published. Modest Gifts is full of what the author calls “casual pleasures”—witty, naughty, and surprisingly tender verse and art. Lust, seduction, betrayal, jealousy, and even the banality of cocktail party chatter are depicted with humor, affection, and, above all, honesty. Here is an aspect of Norman Mailer unknown to many: lighthearted, prankish, whimsical, and often gentle, playfully sketching the intimate urban world that surrounds us. Modest, funny, and true, each poem and drawing shows a new side of one of the greatest writers of our time.

Book excerpt: Gifts: A Study in Comparative Law is the first broad-based study of the law governing the giving and revocation of gifts ever attempted. Gift-giving is everywhere governed by social and customary norms before it encounters the law and the giving of gifts takes place largely outside of the marketplace. As a result of these two characteristics, the law of gifts provides an optimal lens through which to examine how different legal systems engage with social practice. The law of gifts is well-developed both in the civil and the common laws. Richard Hyland's study provides an excellent view of the ways in which different civil and common law jurisdictions confront common issues. The legal systems discussed include principally, in the common law, those of Great Britain, the United States, and India, and, in the civil law, the private law systems of Belgium and France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Professor Hyland also serves a critique of the dominant method in the field, which is a form of functionalism based on what is called the praesumptio similitudinis, namely the axiom that, once legal doctrine is stripped away, developed legal systems tend to reach similar practical results. His study demonstrates, to the contrary, that legal systems actually differ, not only in their approach and conceptual structure, but just as much in the results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthropological theorization of the unity and diversity of Christianity, this book focuses on Christian communities in Nanping, a small city in China. It applies methodological insights from Actor-Network Theory to investigate how the Christian God is made part of local social networks. The study examines how Christians interact with and re-define material objects, such as buildings, pews, offerings, and blood, in order to identify the kind of networks and non-human actors that they collectively design. By comparing local Christian traditions with other practices informing the Nanping religious landscape, the study points out potential cohesion via the centralizing presence of the Christian God, the governing nature of the pastoral clergy, and the semi-transcendent being of the Church.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BBC spends over £500 million each year on goods and services ranging from broadcast specific products to more generic items. It has a centralised procurement function and manages spending along category, enabling it to control its spending more effectively than in the past. The BBC was aiming to deliver £75 million savings from procurement in the three years to April 2008, and is on course to achieve those. But savings have varied widely between categories and it has achieved least from those where it has spent most, Production Resources and Technology and Broadcast Equipment. In recent years the BBC has used fewer suppliers and has established central contracts for a greater proportion of its goods and services, but in 2006-07 it still used over 17,000 suppliers. That year the BBC spent more than £200 million through local deals and made nearly 38,000 individual purchases from suppliers with which it had no central contract. During 2006-07 the BBC introduced an upgraded electronic purchasing system, but 2,000 of the 4,500 licences it had paid for to give staff access to the system were not being used. The average cost of processing a purchase using the system is £6, although the cost is more than six times greater when buyers do not use a central contract. The BBC uses technology across all of its procurement activities, including letting tenders through eAuctions. The BBC has made estimated annual savings of £3 million (14 per cent) from the 19 eAuctions it ran between April 2005 and March 2007, but since then had let only five more contracts in this way.

Book excerpt: This “fascinating historical account” of a Christian mission in Niger offers a personal and richly detailed look at religious institutions in the region (Religious Studies Review). Barbara M. Cooper looks closely at the Sudan Interior Mission, an evangelical Christian mission that has taken a tenuous hold in a predominantly Hausa Muslim area on the southern fringe of Niger. Based on sustained fieldwork, personal interviews, and archival research, this vibrant, sensitive, compelling, and candid book gives a unique glimpse into an important dimension of religious life in Africa. Cooper’s involvement in a violent religious riot provides a useful backdrop for introducing other themes and concerns such as Bible translation, medical outreach, public preaching, tensions between English-speaking and French-speaking missionaries, and the Christian mission’s changing views of Islam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth is, child rearing is not complicated. Therefore, it is not hard. There will be difficult moments, of course, . . . but if a parent is experiencing the rearing of a child or children as generally difficult--as emotionally, intellectually, and even physically exhausting, then the parent is doing something wrong. --John Rosemond, Family Building Trusted family psychologist John Rosemond has a revolutionary message for today's parents: Your grandparents' generation knew a lot more about raising children than all of today's experts. The experts have turned child rearing into a complicated, exhausting chore rather than the simple, straightforward task it should be. In Family Building: The Five Fundamentals of Effective Parenting, Rosemond outlines the five key principles of traditional parenting that are crucial to raising well-behaved children today. * It's about the family, not the children. * Where discipline is concerned, it's about communication, not consequences; leadership not relationship. * It's about respecting others, not high self-esteem. * It's about manners and morals, not skills. * It's about responsibility, not high achievement. Each chapter includes questions from real parents faced with real-life parenting challenges, and in his typical no-nonsense style, Rosemond provides practical solutions. Family Building restores common sense to parenting and puts the parents back in charge. Once again, John Rosemond delivers child-rearing wisdom that no parent should miss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The song “The 12 Days of Christmas” is a mainstay of the holiday season, but the practice of celebrating Christmas as a twelve-day festival fell out of fashion long ago in most cultures. In Celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas, author Chris Marchand explores the history behind the season and individual feast days from December 25 to January 6, and then offers suggestions for how you can celebrate it with your family, church, or community. Along with this, he provides answers to many of the nagging questions surrounding the holiday, such as the history behind the twelve-days song, why December 25 was chosen as the date, and what to do about its supposedly pagan origins. The challenge before us is to first help people see Christmas as a holiday that begins, rather than ends, on December 25, and then to together figure out how to reinvent Christmas in the present by learning how it was celebrated in the past.
