Book excerpt: Excerpt from Optical Measuring Instruments: Their Construction, Theory, and Use I accede with pleasure to the request that I should write a Foreword for the book of my colleague, Dr. Martin, on Optical Measuring Instruments. More especially do I do so, because it was at my invitation that he originally turned his attention to the subject, when the Department of Optical Engineering and Applied Optics was founded at the Imperial College. In Dr. Martin's book the student will find, brought together for the first time, descriptions of a number of well-selected typical instruments, which embody and exemplify in their design, construction, and use, optical principles and devices of great interest and of wide application - information which hitherto it has been very difficult if not impossible to obtain except by reference to the records of the Patent Office, or those of learned societies. This bringing together of cognate matter should be of great value and convenience to everyone interested in the application of optical measuring means to instruments of precision generally. The limitations, for measuring purposes, of the human eye were humorously brought out by a friend of mine - a famous inventor of range-finders - when, some years ago, he deplored the fact that nature had not seen fit to impress our retinas with stereoscopic scales, by means of which ranges could be accurately determined without any instrumental aid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Modern Optical Instruments: A Reference Book for Physicists, Manufacturers of Optical Instruments, and for Officers in the Army and Navy The committee of the Privy Council for scientific and industrial research realised at an early stage the necessity for rendering assistance to the optical instrument making industry, and it was suggested by their advisory council, assisted by the standing committee on glass and optical instruments, that one way of doing this lay in the translation and publication of certain foreign works. One of those recommended was Dr. Gleichen's "Die theories der modernen optischen instrumente," and the standing committee, in looking for a suitable translator, found that Messrs. Emsley and Swaine, two men of science associated with the firm of Messrs. Barr and Stroud, ahd already begun to translate this work. These gentlemen agreed to complete the English version for the Committee of Council, who were thus enabled to issue a work which, because of its special character, is likely to be of particular value to students of this subject. The volume was prepared under the direction of an editorial committee to whom, including especially the chairman, Mr. E. B. Knobel, F.R.A.S., the committee of council are much indebted. The committee were not asked to review the terminology and the use of symbols adopted by the translators, for this, by raising the whole question of nomenclature in optics, would not only have caused a serious delay in the appearance of the work, but would have raised difficult and far-reaching problems which could not at the moment receive attention they deserve. The text of the original was closely followed, with certain exceptions, to which reference is made in the Translator's preface. The first edition of this work included an appendix by the translators on the subject of rangefinders, which it is understood proved valuable. Further information has, however, now been obtained with regard to other optical instruments, and the committee of council have decided to publish it, with the appendix on rangefinders, in a separate volume. The committee of council are indebted to Messrs. Barr & Stroud for the loan of blocks representing views in Rangefinders. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the First Edition "Now a new laboratory bible for optics researchers has joined the list: it is Phil Hobbs's Building Electro-Optical Systems: Making It All Work." —Tony Siegman, Optics & Photonics News Building a modern electro-optical instrument may be the most interdisciplinary job in all of engineering. Be it a DVD player or a laboratory one-off, it involves physics, electrical engineering, optical engineering, and computer science interacting in complex ways. This book will help all kinds of technical people sort through the complexity and build electro-optical systems that just work, with maximum insight and minimum trial and error. Written in an engaging and conversational style, this Second Edition has been updated and expanded over the previous edition to reflect technical advances and a great many conversations with working designers. Key features of this new edition include: Expanded coverage of detectors, lasers, photon budgets, signal processing scheme planning, and front ends Coverage of everything from basic theory and measurement principles to design debugging and integration of optical and electronic systems Supplementary material is available on an ftp site, including an additional chapter on thermal Control and Chapter problems highly relevant to real-world design Extensive coverage of high performance optical detection and laser noise cancellation Each chapter is full of useful lore from the author's years of experience building advanced instruments. For more background, an appendix lists 100 good books in all relevant areas, introductory as well as advanced. Building Electro-Optical Systems: Making It All Work, Second Edition is essential reading for researchers, students, and professionals who have systems to build.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical devices are employed in an ever-increasing range of applications, from simple lenses to complex fibre-optic communication networks. This book provides a detailed introduction to modern optical engineering, covering the fundamental concepts as well as practical techniques and applications. Basic optical principles are presented, particularly reflection, refraction, aberrations, diffraction and interference. Building on this foundation, a wide variety of optical devices and processes are then discussed, including simple optical instruments, photodetectors, spatial light modulators, holography and lasers. Two chapters are devoted to linear system transforms and signal processing, and the book concludes with a chapter on fibre optics. The book contains many worked examples and over 250 problems (solutions manual for instructors available from the publishers). It will be invaluable to electrical engineering and physics undergraduates taking courses in optical engineering, photonics, and electro-optics.
