Book excerpt: The region of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado holds a unique place in the world of Spanish folk literature. Isolated from the rest of the Spanish-speaking world for most of its history since its first settlement in 1598, it has retained, even into our own time, much of its Hispanic folkloric heritage from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries-ballads, songs, poems, folktales, sayings, anecdotes, proverbs, riddles, and folk drama. In this book, written in the late 1930s and never before published, Aurelio M. Espinosa, New Mexico’s pioneer folklorist, presents the first comprehensive, authoritative account of the relict folklore, bringing together the results of his collecting during the first third of this century, in the Southwest and in Spain, and his many ground-breaking scholarly studies.

This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish language and Hispanic culture have left indelible impressions on the landscape of the southwestern United States. The role of cultural and geographical influence has had dramatic effects on the sustainability of the Spanish language and also its development and change. In a linguistic exploration that delves into a language as it is spoken by the Hispanic population of New Mexico and southern Colorado, historical substantiation shows the condition of New Mexican Spanish and what the future holds for its speakers. With two major dialect regions, one in the north and one in the south, detailed maps illustrate the geography of linguistic variation for the Spanish spoken in the region, whose generations of speakers were not only influenced by other languages, but also developed their own variations of words and structure out of need or innovation. This diverse language has evolved since its origin in Spain with influences that include Native American languages, exposure to English, and Mexican immigration in the twentieth century. Snippets of New Mexican folklore and folk etymology give voice to that evolution. Though this work doesn't attempt to save the New Mexican Spanish language, Bills and Vigil detail the effects of inevitable encroachment that intensified during the twentieth century and seriously threaten the continued viability of this unique dialect.

Download or read book Lenguaje written by Richard Griego and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lenguaje: A Cultural History of the Spanish Language of New Mexico" explores the complex evolution of the Spanish language of a small corner of the Spanish-speaking world: New Mexico and southern Colorado. "Lenguaje" recounts the dramatic history of the Spanish language from its vulgar Latin roots in Spain to present-day New Mexico. The themes of conquest and settler colonialism are common threads that unite the differing phases of the evolution of the Spanish language of New Mexico. In this in-depth study, Dr. Richard Griego gives an engaging historical outline of the various cultures that have contributed to the evolution of the region's unique traditional language. Unfortunately, this variety of Spanish is disappearing. The book details efforts to save the Spanish language in the face of cultural and political forces since American colonization. The current effort of dual-language immersion education is giving hope to many that Spanish can be maintained, even if in a more modern and universal form. Griego invites Hispanic New Mexicans to ponder their identity and the role of the Spanish language in this identity. *** "'Lenguaje' is impressively researched. Dr. Griego interprets the historical trajectory of Spanish in New Mexico and analyzes the role of Nuevomexicanos in keeping their ancestral language alive and as a major asset of their Mexicanidad. The text will provide a great service to scholars as well as the general public interested in Chicano culture." - Dr. David Maciel, historian, "Culture Across Borders," "El Bandolero, el Pocho y la Raza" *** "'Lenguaje: A Cultural History of the Spanish of New Mexico' is an excellent analysis and exploration of the historical roots of how Spanish evolved from the earliest days of the written word to the current manifestation of the language in New Mexico. Dr. Griego offers a comprehensive narrative that explores the intimate interaction of human/social history with the spoken language. This is a must-read for those interested in studying the evolution of language within the context of national evolution at the global level. "Dr. Griego presents a remarkable study of human history and language through the lenses of colonialism. The author demonstrates how language played a key role in global colonial expansion and conquest. The language of the powerful has always been dominant, yet, the language of the colonized survives. Spanish has been the language of colonizers as well as the colonized. This text is an important contribution to a deeper and integrative comprehension of human history."- Dr. David Maldonado, Jr., retired Methodist minister, "Crossing Guadalupe Street" *** Richard Griego is a native Nuevomexicano and retired Presidential Professor of Mathematics from the University of New Mexico. His academic field is probability theory, and he is recognized as one of the initiators of the theory of random evolutions. Dr. Griego has published in many journals, including "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences," "Transactions of the American Mathematical Society," and "Scientific American." He has also published "Conceptos de Probabilidad," Fondo de Cultura Económica, México. He has been a director of many science and other programs for enhancing the educational opportunities of underrepresented groups.

This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides state of the art research on developing areas of Spanish in contact with other languages. This manuscript is unique in its broad yet coherent approach to the study of Spanish in bilingual contexts by investigating current issues in the field through well-designed research and innovative analyses. In addition, this book concludes with research on how languages in contact are reflected in individuals in educational settings as well as insights on how to teach bilinguals raised in contact with English and Spanish. This manuscript is divided into three major themes that focus on the overall issues of Spanish in bilingual contexts: 1. The first section, titled "Language and Identity," is composed of four chapters that focus on the connection between language and identity in unique settings. 2. The second section of the manuscript is titled "Language and Dialectal Contact" and is composed of six chapters that analyze the dialectal and linguistic changes in languages in contact in a variety of settings. 3. The final section is titled "Language in Educational Settings" and consists of four chapters with a focus on heritage speakers and second language students of Spanish in different classroom settings as well as abroad. This volume contributes original research in these areas in a way so as to fill valuable gaps in the current knowledge in the field especially in the innovative ways of approaching areas such as teaching heritage learners, understanding diachronic and synchronic dialectal and linguistic changes as well as innovations in language use, and how language contributes to the formation of identity.
