Book excerpt: The Asia Simulation Conference 2006 (JSST 2006) was aimed at exploring challenges in methodologies for modeling, control and computation in simu lation, and their applications in social, economic, and financial fields as well as established scientific and engineering solutions. The conference was held in Tokyo from October 30 to November 1, 2006, and included keynote speeches presented by technology and industry leaders, technical sessions, organized sessions, poster sessions, and vendor exhibits. It was the seventh annual inter national conference on system simulation and scientific computing, which is organized by the Japan Society for Simulation Technology (JSST), the Chi nese Association for System Simulation (CASS), and the Korea Society for Simulation (KSS). For the conference, all submitted papers were refereed by the international technical program committee, each paper receiving at least two independent reviews. After careful reviews by the committee, 65 papers from 143 submis sions were selected for oral presentation. This volume includes the keynote speakers' papers along with the papers presented at the oral sessions and the organized sessions. As a result, we are publishing 87 papers for the conference in this volume. In addition to the scientific tracts presented, the conference featured keynote presentations by five invited speakers. We are grateful to them for accepting our invitation and for their presentations. We also would like to express our gratitude to all contributors, reviewers, technical program conmiittee members, and organizing committee members who made the conference very successful.

Book excerpt: One critical barrier leading to successful implementation of flexible manufacturing and related automated systems is the ever-increasing complexity of their modeling, analysis, simulation, and control. Research and development over the last three decades has provided new theory and graphical tools based on Petri nets and related concepts for the design of such systems. The purpose of this book is to introduce a set of Petri-net-based tools and methods to address a variety of problems associated with the design and implementation of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), with several implementation examples. There are three ways this book will directly benefit readers. First, the book will allow engineers and managers who are responsible for the design and implementation of modern manufacturing systems to evaluate Petri nets for applications in their work. Second, it will provide sufficient breadth and depth to allow development of Petri-net-based industrial applications. Third, it will allow the basic Petri net material to be taught to industrial practitioners, students, and academic researchers much more efficiently. This will foster further research and applications of Petri nets in aiding the successful implementation of advanced manufacturing systems.

Book excerpt: This monograph opens up new horizons for engineers and researchers in academia and in industry dealing with or interested in new developments in the field of system identification and control. It emphasizes guidelines for working solutions and practical advice for their implementation rather than the theoretical background of Gaussian process (GP) models. The book demonstrates the potential of this recent development in probabilistic machine-learning methods and gives the reader an intuitive understanding of the topic. The current state of the art is treated along with possible future directions for research. Systems control design relies on mathematical models and these may be developed from measurement data. This process of system identification, when based on GP models, can play an integral part of control design in data-based control and its description as such is an essential aspect of the text. The background of GP regression is introduced first with system identification and incorporation of prior knowledge then leading into full-blown control. The book is illustrated by extensive use of examples, line drawings, and graphical presentation of computer-simulation results and plant measurements. The research results presented are applied in real-life case studies drawn from successful applications including: a gas–liquid separator control; urban-traffic signal modelling and reconstruction; and prediction of atmospheric ozone concentration. A MATLAB® toolbox, for identification and simulation of dynamic GP models is provided for download.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Automatic Control focuses on the theory of automatic control, including controllers, models, control processes, and analysis of systems. The book first offers information on the general introduction to automatic controllers and the construction of a linear model control system and the initial material for its analysis. Discussions focus on astatic controllers of indirect action, floating feedback, controllers of discontinuous action, static characteristics of elements and of systems, and frequency characteristics of a linear element and of the linear model of a system. The text then ponders on the stability of the linear model of an automatic control system and the construction and evaluation of the processes in the linear model of a system of automatic control. Topics include construction of the process from the transfer function of the system; construction of the control process from the frequency characteristics of the system; and analysis of systems with random disturbances given statistically. The publication takes a look at auto- and forced oscillation in non-linear systems, including approximate determination of forced oscillations in the presence of an external periodic action and determination of the auto-oscillations in the case of auto-resonance. The manuscript is a dependable reference for readers interested in the theory of automatic control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatic Street Light Control System is a simple yet powerful concept, which uses transistor as a switch. By using this system manual works are 100% removed. It automatically switches ON lights when the sunlight goes below the visible region of our eyes. This is done by a sensor called Light Dependant Resistor (LDR) which senses the light actually like our eyes. It automatically switches OFF lights whenever the sunlight comes, visible to our eyes. By using this system energy consumption is also reduced because nowadays the manually operated street lights are not switched off even the sunlight comes and also switched on earlier before sunset. In this project, no need of manual operation like ON time and OFF time setting. This project clearly demonstrates the working of transistor in saturation region and cut-off region. Keywords:-Automatically, Consumption, Demonstrates, Saturation, Dependent, Visible.
