Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary History of Sierra Leone During the five years that it was my privilege to labour as Deputation Secretary of the Church Missionary Society in Ireland, I was frequently asked whether there existed any book in which a complete, and yet concise account of the Society's labours amongst the heathen was given. I was obliged to reply that no such book existed; that, in fact, the history of the Society's work was scattered through a large number of books, tracts, pamphlets, and periodicals, inaccessible to many persons who feel a real interest in missionary work. I have endeavoured in the following pages to supply the want that undoubtedly exists. Whether I have succeeded in doing so, it will be for those who read what I have written to say. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A United Brethren memorial edition published in 1898 of United Brethren missionaries who lost their lives in West Africa serving the church. The book includes biographies (and photos of several) of Isaac Newton Cain, Mary Elizabeth Mutch Cain, Mary C. Archer, Marietta Hatfield, Ella Schenck, Lowry A. and Clara B. Mcgrew, and others. Chapters describe the history and geography of West Africa and Sierra Leone, including details of West African tribal life and native society practices and customs, all written from the perspective of 1898 United Brethren Christian leaders. Missionary endeavors are described. An interesting, historic book reflecting missionary intentions, beliefs in the conversion of native peoples in Africa, and narratives on the lives and deaths of the missionaries. The book is written from the viewpoint of 1898 knowledge of Africa. There are some maps of the era, of interest to a researcher seeking knowledge of how things were in those years and times.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mission Work in Sierra Leona, West Africa For over forty years a band of devoted men and women have been toiling in an obscure field on the west coast of Africa. In their schools they have trained for usefulness several hundred of the youth, and have gathered over six thousand converts into native churches. Early in May, 1898, a heathen mob, displeased at the rapid progress of Christian civilization, and angry over the just requirements of the British Government, swept like a fierce hurricane over this mission field and the surrounding country, murdering seven American missionaries, many native pastors, and several hundred converts, and burning the mission property. This little volume tells the story by those personally familiar with it It also gives assurance that neither the burning fevers of the climate nor the blazing fagots and fiercer fury of the "war boys" shall prevent our completing the divinely appointed task in Sierra Leone. Rather will this baptism of fire and blood lead our people to a nobler consecration, and prepare the way among the heathen for a more fruitful harvest to be gathered into the Master's garner. As I have passed through these pages I have lived over again happy days spent in this mission field. Once more, I have enjoyed the courtesies of the gentlemanly British officers - in the governor's palace and in the police captain's mud hut - so refreshing in this dark land; again, I have renewed the joys of the glorious friendships of this heroic baud of missionaries, American and native, all dear to me as my own kindred. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1874 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter ix. the victory of faith. "From all Thy saints in warfare, for all Thy saints at rest, To Thee, O blessed Jesu, all praises be addressed. Thou, Lord, didst win the battle, that they might conquerors be; Their crowns of living glory are lit with rays from Thee." Nelson. "the social advancement of Sierra Leone," says the Sixty-Seventh Annual Report of the Church Missionary Society, "is the triumph of' a great philanthropic and religious enterprize." The facts related in the preceding pages go far to prove the correctness of the foregoing statement. There are, it is true, some who have visited Sierra Leone, who have denied the success of the experiment, so far as the religious and social elevation of the people is concerned. The accounts given by missionaries, or those interested in missionary societies, are objected to by some parties as being partial and exaggerated reports of their achievements; although all who know the truth of the case bear testimony that missionaries far oftener understate than exaggerate the result of their labours. It is therefore satisfactory to be able to say that there is ample evidence of the truth of the statements made in the foregoing chapters to be found in the report of a Parliamentary Select Committee, which sat during the session of 1865, to investigate the condition of the West African colonies. That Committee was eminently impartial in its composition, and examined witnesses notoriously hostile to the negro race and to Christian missions, as well as those who were favourable. The Committee, at the close of its investigations, presented to the House the evidence they had received, together with a few recommendations. These documents have been printed in a Blue Book. They are too voluminous to...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corisco Days: The First Thirty Years of the West Africa Mission I have not tried to make this a history of the West Africa Mission down 'to present date. Purposely, I have confined these sketches to the extreme limits of the fifty years from 1842, the beginning of the old Gaboon Mission, to about 1892. I preferred to include the records of only the thirty years from 18219, the beginning of the old Corisco Mis sion, to about 1879, when Corisco ceased to be under white control, the management of its ecclesiastical and educational affairs being placed in efficient native hands. More especially, I have confined myself to the days of the ten years, 1861 to 1871, during which I was personally located at Corisco and Benita. Book excerpt: From the Founding Fathers through the present, Christianity has exercised powerful influence in the United States—from its role in shaping politics and social institutions to its hand in inspiring art and culture. The Encyclopedia of Christianity in the United States outlines the myriad roles Christianity has played and continues to play. This masterful five-volume reference work includes biographies of major figures in the Christian church in the United States, influential religious documents and Supreme Court decisions, and information on theology and theologians, denominations, faith-based organizations, immigration, art—from decorative arts and film to music and literature—evangelism and crusades, the significant role of women, racial issues, civil religion, and more. The first volume opens with introductory essays that provide snapshots of Christianity in the U.S. from pre-colonial times to the present, as well as a statistical profile and a timeline of key dates and events. Entries are organized from A to Z. The final volume closes with essays exploring impressions of Christianity in the United States from other faiths and other parts of the world, as well as a select yet comprehensive bibliography. Appendices help readers locate entries by thematic section and author, and a comprehensive index further aids navigation.
