The special volume in the series Glaube und Denken contains papers presented by 26 theologians from 12 different countries. The authors convened at the university of Regensburg for a week-long International Summer School. They pondered how mission and peaceful co-existence can be achieved under newly emerging conditions. They observed a rise of nationalistic and fundamentalist currents in many Asian countries in which Christians are often a minority. Furthermore, developments in Germany, such as secularization and the increasing number of believers of other religions through the influx of immigrants, show the urgency to reflect on this new situation. The collected papers touch topics such as education, ecumenism, and history. Most of the participants are students of the Regensburg systematic theologian Hans Schwarz whose special fields of interest are mirrored in these topics.

Book excerpt: The book is the first major study to bring together the two early twentieth-century theologians Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German Lutheran pastor, and Simone Weil, French philosopher and convert to Christianity. Both were victims of Nazi oppression, and neither survived the war. The book explores the two theologians' reflections on Christian responsiveness to God and neighbour, being the interdependence of the two great commandments of the Jewish Law reiterated by Jesus. It sets out the common ground and the differing emphases in their interpretations. For Bonhoeffer, responsiveness was the transformation of the whole person effected by faith (Gestaltung), and the responsibility (Verantwortung) for one's actions which it implies. For Weil, responsiveness was the hope and expectation of grace (attente) reflected in attention, the capacity to listen to, understand and help others. Both Bonhoeffer and Weil faced a world dominated by aggression and horrendous suffering. Both endeavoured to articulate their responses, as Christians, to that world. The relevance of their thought to the twenty-first century is explored, in relation to perspectives on grace and freedom, on aggression, suffering, and forgiveness, and on the role of the church in society. Conclusions are illustrated by reference to contemporary theologians including Rowan Williams, Daniel Hardy, Frances Young and David Tracy.

Book excerpt: From the beginning of the nineteenth century through to 1960, Protestant missionaries were the most important intermediaries between South Africa’s ruling white minority and its black majority. The Equality of Believers reconfigures the narrative of race in South Africa by exploring the pivotal role played by these missionaries and their teachings in shaping that nation’s history. The missionaries articulated a universalist and egalitarian ideology derived from New Testament teachings that rebuked the racial hierarchies endemic to South African society. Yet white settlers, the churches closely tied to them, and even many missionaries evaded or subverted these ideas. In the early years of settlement, the white minority justified its supremacy by equating Christianity with white racial identity. Later, they adopted segregated churches for blacks and whites, followed by segregationist laws blocking blacks’ access to prosperity and citizenship—and, eventually, by the ambitious plan of social engineering that was apartheid. Providing historical context reaching back to 1652, Elphick concentrates on the era of industrialization, segregation, and the beginnings of apartheid in the first half of the twentieth century. The most ambitious work yet from this renowned historian, Elphick’s book reveals the deep religious roots of racial ideas and initiatives that have so profoundly shaped the history of South Africa.

Book excerpt: Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995) was a Talmud scholar as well as Jewish philosopher trained in phenomenology.In his conversations and writings, he spoke at times directly to Christians, challenging them to probe more deeply into the ethical nuances of responsibility. Levinas was constantly in search of an ideal of holiness, one that would become an "absolute value (in) the human possibility of giving the other priority over oneself." This priority became real whenever the search for God was focused into a concern for the other, a concern Levinas shared with Christians: "When I speak to a Christian, I always quote Matthew 25; the relation to God is presented there as a relation to another person. It is not a metaphor: in the other, there is a real presence of God. In my relation to the other, I hear the Word of God." Levinas mentions how he was led to this same passage in the Gospel "where the people are astonished to hear that they have abandoned and persecuted God. They eventually find out that while they were sending the poor away, they were actually sending God himself away." Later commenting on the theological motif reflecting God's descent to earth, and how this movement is commensurable with helping the poor and feeding the hungry, Levinas brings one's attention to "the authentic Eucharist . . . when the other comes to face me." Drawing from Levinas's essays and works, this book focuses on themes and concepts and ways they convolve with responsibility. Peripheral to the presentation in this book is the steady question of how Levinas's analyses of responsibility address Christians.

Slave redemption and prisoner redemption characterised the Mediterranean region from antiquity to the early modern age. Closely connected with the history of slavery, these phenomena not only represent different facets of the efforts to end slavery but are also in themselves a decisive part of various histories of conflict and relationships. The fourteen essays in this volume, originally presented at an international conference in Paderborn sponsored by the DFG in September 2013, examine the theme for the first time in terms of the fundamental question of the significance of religion. Taking a broad chronological sweep they examine, from Jewish, Christian and Muslim perspectives, the practice and justification of redeeming slaves from the hands of those of other faiths. Thus the theological and historical discourses in each of the three Abrahamic religions are analysed and the links between them established where possible. The approach also adds the perspective of religious history to the previously dominant social and economic approaches to slave redemption, opening up a new and greatly promising field of research.
