For the purpose of the study on the psychoanalytical concept of the uncanny in connection with linguistic theory, the most important theories have been evaluated in the first chapter of the dissertation, titled “The Concept of the Uncanny and its Relation to Language”. Afterwards the chapter “The Uncanny and Language in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass” applies the acquired theoretical framework to the two selected texts in order to understand the different ways in which Carroll manipulates language in order to create an uncanny atmosphere.

It will focus on the differences in the general storyline and narrative events, on different characters and what makes them seem mad or insane, as well as the visual aspects of the ‘Wonderland'. In order to have a more similar storyline in terms of certain events and descriptions of characters, the author will also use arguments and examples regarding the prequel to ‘Alice Through the Looking-Glass’ (2016), namely ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (2010) directed by Tim Burton, and at some points may refer to scenes from the original first novel ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ (1865) by Lewis Carroll, which marks one of the first fantasy novels written for children and “were among the first to offer [...] Victorians stories for children with a purpose other than to educate them in how to behave” (Beckman 7). By doing so, the author will proof the thesis, that madness and insanity do not always have to be bad. Moreover they seem to be a great way to deal with unpleasing or traumatic events in order to make the seemingly impossible possible by believing in its possibility, as well as an opportunity to build up a resistance against society’s cruelty and moral norms and ideals. In addition the author will show why Alice and the Mad Hatter are the heroes based on their madness and what makes Alice a role model for feminism.

Alice tells Kitty a story about "Looking-Glass House," a magical world on the other side of the mirror where everything is backwards. Suddenly, Alice finds herself on the mantel piece. She walks through the mirror and she is in Looking-Glass House.She sees that she is in a room quite like her own, but slightly different. There are chessmen standing in pairs on the fireplace and Alice comes to the aid of the White Queen's daughter, Lily, but the chessmen seem to be unable to see her. She finds a poem called "Jabberwocky" which is complete nonsense and this frustrates her, and he decides to explore the rest of the house.She finds a magnificent garden and follows the path into the garden. Strangely, every time she follows the path through the garden, she ends up back at the door to the house. In her frustration, she wonders aloud about how to make her way through the garden and to her surprise, a Tiger-lily responds.The other flowers begin to speak, and a few of them are rude to Alice. She learns from the flowers the Red Queen is near and Alice goes to find her. When Alice meets the Red Queen she engages in a conversation. The Red Queen keeps correcting Alice's etiquette.Alice then notices a chess game being played and tells the Red Queen she would like to play. The Red Queen tells her she can be a White Pawn and if she makes it to the end of the game, Alice will become a queen.
