Book excerpt: A critical examination of the Encyclopedia Britannic. "Misinforming a Nation," by S. S. Van Dine, is a muckraking critique of the Encyclopedia Britannica, a book so radical and dynamic in its intellectual and progressive views that it is bound to create widespread discussion wherever it goes. The author's aim is to prove that the Encyclopedia does not at all line up to the merits claimed for it in regard to its advertised qualifications as a supreme, unbiased and international reference library'- In summarizing its incapacity he says of its main departments of culture that they are "characterized by misstatements, inexcusable omissions, rabid and patriotic prejudices, personal animosities, blatant errors of fact, scholastic ignorance, gross neglect, non-British culture, an astounding egotism, and an undisguised contempt for American progress." The contents include disputations on The Novel, The Drama, Poetry, Non-British Painting, Music, Science, Philosophy, etc., together with a list of two hundred omissions of more or less important celebrities denied biographies in the Britannica.

Book excerpt: How rumors, lies, and misrepresentations shaped American history After the election of Donald Trump as president, people in the United States and across large swaths of Europe, Latin America, and Asia engaged in the most intensive discussion in modern times about falsehoods pronounced by public officials. Fake facts in their various forms have long been present in American life, particularly in its politics, public discourse, and business activities – going back to the time when the country was formed. This book explores the long tradition of fake facts, in their various guises, in American history. It is one of the first historical studies to place the long history of lies and misrepresentation squarely in the middle of American political, business, and science policy rhetoric. In Fake News Nation, James Cortada and William Aspray present a series of case studies that describe how lies and fake facts were used over the past two centuries in important instances in American history. Cortada and Aspray give readers a perspective on fake facts as they appear today and as they are likely to appear in the future.

Book excerpt: Fundamentally reshapes our understanding of the causes of the American Revolution and the pivotal role foreign news and misinformation played in driving colonists to revolt. Runner-up of the Journal of The American Revolution Book of the Year Award by the Journal of The American Revolution "Fake news" is not new. Just like millions of Americans today, the revolutionaries of the eighteenth century worried that they were entering a "post-truth" era. Their fears, however, were not fixated on social media or clickbait, but rather on peoples' increasing reliance on reading news gathered from foreign newspapers. In Misinformation Nation, Jordan E. Taylor reveals how foreign news defined the boundaries of American politics and ultimately drove colonists to revolt against Britain and create a new nation. News was the lifeblood of early American politics, but newspaper printers had few reliable sources to report on events from abroad. Accounts of battles and beheadings, as well as declarations and constitutions, often arrived alongside contradictory intelligence. Though frequently false, the information that Americans encountered in newspapers, letters, and conversations framed their sense of reality, leading them to respond with protests, boycotts, violence, and the creation of new political institutions. Fearing that their enemies were spreading fake news, American colonists fought for control of the news media. As their basic perceptions of reality diverged, Loyalists separated from Patriots and, in the new nation created by the revolution, Republicans inhabited a political reality quite distinct from that of their Federalist rivals. The American Revolution was not only a political contest for liberty, equality, and independence (for white men, at least); it was also a contest to define certain accounts of reality to be truthful while defining others as false and dangerous. Misinformation Nation argues that we must also conceive of the American Revolution as a series of misperceptions, misunderstandings, and uninformed overreactions. In addition to making a striking and original argument about the founding of the United States, Misinformation Nation will be a valuable prehistory to our current political moment.

Book excerpt: The intellectual colonization of America by England has been going on for generations. Taking advantage of her position of authority-a position built on centuries of æsthetic tradition-England has let pass few opportunities to ridicule and disparage our activities in all lines of creative effort, and to impress upon us her own assumed cultural superiority. Americans, lacking that sense of security which long-established institutions would give them, have been influenced by the insular judgments of England, and, in an effort to pose as au courant of the achievements of the older world, have adopted in large degree the viewpoint of Great Britain.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Misinforming a Nation Even our educational Institutions disseminate the English superstition and neglect the great men of America; for nowhere in the United States will you find the Spll'lt of narrow snobbery so highly developed as in our colleges and universi ties. Recently an inferior British poet came here, and, for no other reason apparently save that he was English, he was made a professor in one of our large universities! Certainly his talents did not warrant this appointment, for there are at least a score of American poets who are undeniably superior to this young Englishman. Nor has he shown any evidences of scholarship which would justify the honor paid him. But an Englishman, if he'seek favors, needs little more than proof of his nationality, whereas an American must give evidence of his worth. Book excerpt: "To understand the American Revolution and the early republic, the author argues that we must attend to the descriptive truths--statements about the nature of the world and its politics--that the revolutionaries believed. The author draws on a large set of US and Canadian newspapers to show how Americans used information, and misinformation, from foreign newspapers to frame their political realities"--
