Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minor Surgery: Or Hints on the Every-Day Duties of the Surgeon In the former editions of this volume, some of the points referred to seemed of such simplicity, that considerable doubt existed in my mind as to the propriety of their consideration, presuming that every student would be familiar with their details. Experience, however, has demonstrated that it is in the very simplest matters that the young practitioner soonest hesitates, his collegiate studies instructing him rather in the weightier matters of the law than in those of less importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Minor Surgery and Bandaging The Office of house-surgeon to a public hospital is one of the most responsible posts a young surgeon can occupy, and, at the same time, its value in giving him both experience and confidence can be scarcely too highly estimated. Before, however, entering upon the more purely surgical duties of the house-surgeon, it may be well to say a few words on his relation to the other Officials of the establishment, to the patients, and to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Minor Surgery and Bandaging for the Use of House-Surgeons, Dressers, and Junior Practitioners The relation of the house-surgeon to the visiting surgeon varies also in different institutions, and with different individuals. Some visiting-surgeons wish to do everything themselves, and are very wroth if a house surgeon has opened an abscess or tightened a bandage; while others allow their subordinates considerable liberty, provided the patients suffer no harm. Here, again, tradi tion and observation during student-life will enable the house-surgeon to keep clear of all collision with his superior officers and he is certainly bound to respect the reasonable prejudices of each surgeon with regard to the details of his practice, and not to attempt to bring the practices of two or three individual surgeons to one uniform level, by which all possibility of comparison would be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Talks on Minor Surgery To-day a majority of the surgeons in active practice have grown up with the antiseptic idea. In the course of their development, the antiseptic conscience has become part of their being. That intangible thing which we call surgical instinct includes and partakes Of that same conscience. There is no danger-of any man who has received his training in the past twenty years going far astray, with that con science to prompt him. Every source of surgi cal infection has been so thoroughly and univer sally studied that, with one Or two exceptions which I must speak Of later, our technique is now perfect, or as near perfection as it is likely to become. But there are those Other principles which were so important to the former generations. Are you students Of to-day aware of them? Is it not a fact that you have come to look upon asepsis as the one thing needful, and to feel that, asepsis being accomplished, there is noth ing more to be done? Are you to be as good clinicians as were your surgical forebears? That is a question which your teachers Often ask themselves; over which they hesitate in the answer. If I name some of those general principles to which I refer they seem commonplace enough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regional Minor Surgery: Describing the Treatment of Those Conditions Daily Encountered by General Practitioner In writing this little volume, it has been the aim to avoid subjects of a technical character as far as possible, for it was rather intended to describe the lesions coming under the heading of minor surgery and their treatment, than to give directions for procedures with which every advanced student is familiar. No bibliography has been given, and very few references to other writers, both for brevity's sake and because, with very few exceptions, these pages represent the result of personal Observation during eighteen years of considerable work in dis pensaries and private and hospital practice. During these years the writer has become more and more impressed with the importance of minor surgery. This term, While a useful one from the standpoint of a rough classification, must in other respects be considered an improper one. Minor surgery is minor in name only, since the most trivial injury may be followed by disastrous results, and the only way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Minor Surgery During the last decade while surgery has shared in the great advance made by all the sciences, one of its branches, minor surgery, has far outstripped the others. This has been caused by a great number of factors. The industrial clinic, the workers compensation insurance, the use of local anesthesia, and the realization of the far-reaching results and complications of poorly and improperly treated minor injuries have been responsible for the prodigious strides of this branch. The disfiguring scars of burns, the stiff fingers, due to neglected tendon sheath infections, and other such conditions so important to the individual both socially and economically have left their indelible imprint upon all surgeons, stimulating them to a keener interest in this formerly unimportant division of surgery. To give detailed description of the widely different methods of treating the same surgical condition would fill many volumes, and would fall far beyond the scope of this book. In the chapters which follow an attempt has been made to give those surgical procedures which are simple and efficient. In their selection it has always been borne in mind that while complicated treatments may yield better results in the hands of their originators, complete failure has often met the attempts of those not skilled in the involved technic. A work on Surgery has long since ceased to be the product of an individual. We, therefore, extend our heartiest thanks to other authors, our predecessors and teachers; and for much help to Doctors G. M. Phelps and Ralph Colp, and also to Grace Adams and Emma Renick. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Bandaging: And Other Operations of Minor Surgery The object which the author has had in view in the preparation of the following pages, has been, to present to the younger surgeon and to the student, information relative to the art of bandaging, and to some other points of importance in the practice of surgery. These are subjects which are but slightly alluded to in systematic courses of lectures, or in most of the published treatises on the science; yet the necessity of a familiar acquaintance with them will be readily acknowledged by every surgeon of experience. In the collection of the materials for this volume, the author has availed himself very freely of the knowledge of others, as exhibited in books, and of his own opportunities in hospitals and in private, of gaining practical acquaintance with the subjects of which he has treated. He trusts that he has not failed in his intention, always to give due credit to all from whom he has taken information. Originality can scarcely be expected, in a work of this kind, excepting perhaps in its composition. The book is divided into five parts. Of these, the first embraces a description of the implements, if such a term be admissible, with which the ordinary duties of the surgeon are accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Handicraft: A Manual of Surgical Manipulations, Minor Surgery, and Other Matters Connected With the Work of House Surgeons and Surgical Dressers This main idea I have wished to express in the title I have chosen, and it has been very far from my desire to write in any sense an elementary work on theoretical surgery. Still I am conscious of having been forced in some places to treat of abstract surgical questions, and to sacrifice absolute consistency if by so doing I could better explain necessary manipulations.
