Book excerpt: Minnesotans are a highly skilled bunch, whether pursuing traditional activities like wild ricing and pickling, or tastefully displaying taxidermy, or selecting the right fishing bait. Skills particularly appropriate to Minnesota-- such as creating seed art or baking a Bundt cake--may be fully on display at the state fair, a prime opportunity to join with neighbors in celebrating our many talents. The Minnesota Book of Skills brings to life the basic know-how that makes us uniquely Minnesotan. Seasonal tips like how to gracefully exit a ski lift mingle with skills your grandparents knew well, such as what to forage for while on a hike. How soon is too soon to bring a child to the Boundary Waters or set her up on hockey skates? The answers are here. Maybe you'll never carve an ice sculpture or build your own coffin--but isn't it comforting to know that one handy book offers just the guidance you'll need?

Book excerpt: Due to popular demand, these classic guides to the highways and back roads of Minnesota and Wisconsin are back in print. The unique purpose behind these previously hard-to-find travel companions is to explore the history of towns along the most well-traveled highways in both states. The reader will learn the stories behind the road signs -- not only why towns formed where they did and how they were named, but also local anecdotes, historical accounts, and personal glimpses. Each volume is enlivened by maps, illustrations, and historical photographs. Among the fascinating stories is that of Hibbing, Minnesota, which at one point had to be moved several miles because of its location atop rich deposits of iron ore; later this same town gave birth to the Greyhound Bus Line. Another story describes how the young Jefferson Davis fell in love with Zachary Taylor's daughter, Sarah Taylor, on Pine Island in Wisconsin. Sarah died of malaria three months after their marriage, leaving Davis heartbroken. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the South, where he later gained lasting fame as president of the Confederate Army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota: A State Guide An avalanche of facts, actual and near, began to pour into the State office. Even after each had been tested we still had enough to make a series rather than one volume. The weeding out was a long and often painful process. Had not Dr. Folwell required four large volumes for the history of Minnesota? We must tell the story, and tell it fairly, in a single essay. Communities that merited a chapter at least, must be squeezed into a, few lines. Local pride, however justified, must be sternly repressed. From sins of commission we h0pe to have guarded ourselves fairly well with the help of consulting authorities. But for our sins of omission we have no defense other than the imposed space limitations. If, despite its shortcomings, the book has merit - and we may as well admit we think it has some - credit is due largely to the generous co operation we have received on all sides. To the many volunteers who sent us local stories and photographs we offer our profound thanks, and beg their forgiveness and leniency for our enforced treatment of their material. Outstanding was the help given us by the University of Minnesota, whose department heads not only read our manuscripts and proffered invaluable suggestions, but permitted us to turn to them again and again as our court of last appeal; by the Minnesota Historical Society, its head and staff, who gave so generously of their knowledge and records; by the State Depart ment of Education, whose commissioner rescued us in one of our darkest moments; by all those librarians to whom we fear we were a persistent trial; by the unfailing confidence and support we received from our State Administrator. We hope that in the Minnesota Guide they will find something to justify the time and sympathy they gave so freely.
