Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: In these pages, laymen will find themselves and their condition of life the center of attention at all times. Consequently they will not find a specifically spiritual vocabulary or an alien pious rhetoric. They will not find a long list of prayers, practices and penances. They will not find a list of things to be given up. Patiently and gently, these souls will open up to God. They will see that true peace comes from true love, and that love means an entire giving, and that giving means some changes. Such transitions are sometimes easy, sometimes not. But in the end what was once unwisely loved is now put aside, and what was once foolishly despised is now embraced with gratitude. Every man who has gone even a part of the way knows this. The purpose of the book, then, is to open the soul to the grace of God and to show some practical consequences of the love of God in a life that wants to find love and peace. --from the Introduction

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writings of Alexander Campbell: Selections Chiefly From the Millennial Harbinger Another book has been floated upon the tide of Time; its value must be determined alone by an examination of its contents. The thoughts contained within its pages have not proceeded from our brain, but from that of one of the greatest thinkers of this or any other age. The work is a compilation from the writings of Alexander Campbell, chiefly from the Millennial Harbinger, embracing most of the theological questions, which have divided the religious world into sects and factions. A few articles may appear which were written by others, but only such as had his unqualified endorsement. Since the light of the gospel of Christ was obscured, we have had many reformers - Luther, Knox, Calvin, Wesley, and others. Each one contributed something to the cause of truth, but none succeeded in freeing themselves fully from the dogmas and superstitions of the dark ages. We cherish the name of every man who has contributed his part to the amelioration and elevation of the human race. We contemplate with admiration the men who have added one stone to the great temple of science. We view with astonishment the genius of an Alexander, a Bonaparte, the Caesars, and other great chieftains who have crimsoned the world with blood, only to gratify their lust for power and ambition for fame. How much more, then, should we venerate and honor the man whose whole life has been dedicated and devoted to the good of man and the salvation of souls. In prehistoric times there lay buried in the tombs and debris of past ages, the history of generations gone by, written upon their monuments in unknown characters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is viewed here as the great cultural force which introduced and preserved civilization in the era of westward expansion from 1776 to the eve of the Civil War. In this first major study of religion in the South, Mr. Posey surveys the work of the seven chief denominations—Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, Cumberland Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Episcopal—as they developed in the frontier region that now comprises the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. The great challenges faced by the churches, Mr. Posey believes, were, first, the barbarism continually threatening a people isolated in a savage wilderness and, second, the materialism likely to engross minds preoccupied with the hard necessities of frontier survival. Many frontiersmen who had wandered across the mountains to escape the trammels and restrictions of an established society were distrustful of traditional religion, and some forgot their inherited beliefs entirely. To overcome these attitudes demanded new approaches. As organizations the churches faced great obstacles in attempting to minister to the folk on the moving frontier. One early answer was the camp meeting, and many of its features—an emphasis upon fervid emotion and individualism and the active participation and use of untrained people in religious services—continued as dominant elements in frontier religion. Indeed, those churches flexible enough to make use of these appeals were the most successful in spreading their beliefs. But inherent in the emotion and individualism was the danger of fragmentation, a danger most tragically evident when the slavery controversy split most southern denominations from their northern brethren. In education the churches fared better; even those that were at first skeptical of its benefits were by the time of the Civil War actively engaged in its support. But overall, the southern churches were hampered by too little money for the support of priests and preachers, too little communication between isolated congregations, and too little regard for service to the community. At the center of the churches' work—the care of congregations, the missions to the Indians and the Negroes, and the founding of educational institutions—were the frontier ministers. Mr. Posey pictures these men—stern and hard but full of zeal—as performing a stupendous task in their efforts to build and maintain spiritual life on the southern frontier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lexington, Kentucky, has the honor of being the birthplace of one of the first genuinely homegrown American Christian faiths: the Disciples of Christ. Established in 1832 by the union of two Christian groups led by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone, their descendent churches are now referred to by religious scholars as the Stone-Campbell movement. In the state’s best tradition, this historic movement soon acquired its own larger-than-life legend: Raccoon John Smith, the flamboyant frontier preacher of the southern Kentucky mountains. Smith moved to the lowland Bluegrass and braved considerable odds to preach and establish the self-described “pure, nondenominational” Christianity of Stone and Campbell throughout the state and beyond. The 1832 union of Stone and Campbell’s churches was in fact formalized not by Stone and Campbell, but by Stone together with Smith, who represented Campbell’s constituency in Kentucky. Raccoon John Smith occupies a well-deserved place both in Kentucky and Stone-Campbell history. All previous biographical studies have been colored by the religious faith he embraced and the legends that evolved around him, however, rather than giving an accurate account of Smith’s life. In Raccoon John Smith, Elder John Sparks fills this void in the literature about Smith, using historical sources to present a faithful portrait of a seminal frontier preacher and colorful figure in early Kentucky history.

Opposed, and always Opposed our union, unless we would worship'the Philadelphia idol, the little book drawn up by a few English Baptists in 1689 against Arminianism, and adopted in Philadelphia in 1742 by an Association of Baptists. We then regarded, and still regard the Baptist denomination as nighest the old platform in the New Testa ment, of any of the sects into which the christian world has been rent under the influence of the 'man of sin but not on account of the doctrinal Views of that sect: for it would be yet impossible to say what they are in any one latitude in this union. They vary like the soil of the country from Georgia to Maine; but in the general views of the kingdom of grace and of admission into it, in abhorrence of councils, synods, and authoritative tribunals, and in the necessity of faith, repentance, baptism, a new creature, and in many other items then sacred, but now lost sight of by many of that sect, we cordially united with them not for. Our benefit, but for theirs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
