Book Synopsis Migration of Freshwater Fishes by : Martyn Lucas
Download or read book Migration of Freshwater Fishes written by Martyn Lucas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies have increasingly demonstrated the widespread existence of spatio-temporal variations in the abundance and distribution of species of freshwater fishes, previously assumed not to move between habitats. These movements are often on a seasonal or ontogenetic basis, for spawning, feeding and refuge, and in many cases are fundamental for the successful completion of lifecycles. This important book provides a single source for a range of previously widely dispersed information on these movements of fish in fresh waters, covering potamodromous fishes as well as the more familiar diadromous species, worldwide. Contents include full descriptions of types of migration and spatial behaviour, the stimulus and capacity for fish to migrate, the effects of climate on patterns of migratory behaviour, a taxonomic analysis (mostly by family) of freshwater fish migration, methods for studying migration, and details of the impacts of man's activities on freshwater fish migration. Migration of Freshwater Fishes provides an excellent and comprehensive reference to which the river manager, biologist or student can now refer to obtain information, advice and current opinion on the migratory behaviour of most taxonomic groups of fishes occurring in fresh water. University libraries and aquatic research stations should also have copies of this essential reference book on their shelves. Well-known international authors. Of great commercial importance to fisheries and professional angling bodies. Draws together much new information in one place. Detailed review of world wide migratory behaviour for most groups of freshwater fishes. Pure and applied relevance, for academics, fisheries scientists, river managers and conservationists. This comprehensive book includes 67 tables and figures and over 1,400 references.

Book Synopsis The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia by : J. D. McPhail
Download or read book The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia written by J. D. McPhail and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2007-09-28 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of deteriorating habitats and a loss of biodiversity make this reference work on the freshwater fishes of British Columbia more necessary than ever before. Eighty-one comprehensive species accounts aid accurate identification and consist of an illustration, the scientific and common names of the fish, its distinguishing characteristics, taxonomic comments, geographic distribution, a life-history summary, a habitat-use summary, and conservation comments. The book is a critical resource for biologists, naturalists, management and conservation officers, anglers, and members of the public who are concerned about our natural heritage.
Book Synopsis The Ecology of River Systems by : Bryan R. Davies
Download or read book The Ecology of River Systems written by Bryan R. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.

Book Synopsis Indicators of Ecosystem Integrity by : David B. Donald
Download or read book Indicators of Ecosystem Integrity written by David B. Donald and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to identify potential ecological indicators that could be used in future monitoring programs assessing the health and integrity of the aquatic environment of the Peace-Athabasca delta, with a focus on the large, persistent delta lakes and channels. The identified indicators were developed from historical data and from a 1994 limnological survey of Mamawi and Claire lakes. The main criteria for selecting the indicators were: relevance to the public, cost of collecting data, and linkages with the food web which includes the people of the Fort Chipewyan area. The indicators include three physical/chemical and four structural indicators (species abundance and structure, fish harvest).

Book Synopsis Declines in Canadian Amphibian Populations by : Christine Annette Bishop
Download or read book Declines in Canadian Amphibian Populations written by Christine Annette Bishop and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, a workshop was held to examine the data related to declines in Canadian amphibian populations and associated causes and, in particular, to develop a protocol to address the issue. Participants were invited to present reports on the current status of knowledge on amphibians in Canada, particularly species that appear to be threatened. Summaries of this information are presented in this report, along with the factors that may be contributing to fluctuations in amphibian populations. Methodologies and tribulations involved in accurately assessing amphibian population size and recruitment are given. A framework for environmental monitoring was presented and the data needed, both intensive and extensive, was discussed.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Several wetland classification schemes have been devised to facilitate waterfowl management in North America. These schemes were developed primarily from vegetational, not hydrological, characteristics of wetlands and so do not consider annual changes in slough responses to climatic variability. Here we provide a hydrological scheme that proves to be consistent with Millar's (1976) ecological classification scheme"--Abstract.

Download or read book Wintering Populations of Lesser Snow Geese and Ross' Geese in the Northern Highlands of Mexico, 1988-1990 written by Bruce Calvert Turner and published by Environment Canada, Canadian Wildlife Service. This book was released on 1994 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northern Highlands of Mexico is an increasingly important wintering area for populations of Lesser Snow Geese and Ross" Geese that nest in the Western and Central Canadian Arctic. In Mexico, the growing importance of the Northern Highlands as a wintering area for Ross" Geese and the western Central Flyway population of Lesser Snow Geese underscored the need to conduct field observations in that area and prompted the development of a joint effort involving the Mexican Secretaria de Desarrolla Social, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Canadian Wildlife Service. Some of the objectives were: estimate the number of white geese on the principal wintering areas in the states of Durango and Chihuahua, determine the breeding ground origin of Lesser Snow Goose stocks overwinterin in Mexico, determint ehe incidence and number of Ross' Geese among flocks of white geese, assess the quality and security of white goose wintering habitat, and identify wetland habitats of critical importance to waterfowl.
