Book Synopsis Microstructure and Wear of Materials by : K.-H. Zum Gahr
Download or read book Microstructure and Wear of Materials written by K.-H. Zum Gahr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-03-01 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book will be useful not only to practising engineers and scientists, but also to advanced students interested in wear. It reviews our current understanding of the influence of microstructural elements and physical properties of materials (metals, polymers, ceramics and composites) on wear. The introductory chapters describe the relation between microstructure and mechanical properties of materials, surfaces in contact and the classification of wear processes. The following chapters are concerned with wear modes of great practical interest such as grooving wear, sliding wear, rolling-sliding wear and erosive wear. Our present understanding of abrasion, adhesion, surface fatigue and tribochemical reactions as the relevant wear mechanisms is discussed, and new wear models are presented. In addition to extensive experimental results, sketches have been widely used for clarifying the physical events.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology by : Robert W. Bruce
Download or read book Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology written by Robert W. Bruce and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 1173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the best-selling first edition, the growing price and environmental cost of energy have increased the significance of tribology. Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology, Volume II: Theory and Design, Second Edition demonstrates how the principles of tribology can address cost savings, energy conservation, and environmental protection. This second edition provides a thorough treatment of established knowledge and practices, along with detailed references for further study. Written by the foremost experts in the field, the book is divided into four sections. The first reviews the basic principles of tribology, wear mechanisms, and modes of lubrication. The second section covers the full range of lubricants/coolants, including mineral oil, synthetic fluids, and water-based fluids. In the third section, the contributors describe many wear- and friction-reducing materials and treatments, which are currently the fastest growing areas of tribology, with announcements of new coatings, better performance, and new vendors being made every month. The final section presents components, equipment, and designs commonly found in tribological systems. It also examines specific industrial areas and their processes. Sponsored by the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, this handbook incorporates up-to-date, peer-reviewed information for tackling tribological problems and improving lubricants and tribological systems. The book shows how the proper use of generally accepted tribological practices can save money, conserve energy, and protect the environment.

Book Synopsis Laser Surface Engineering by : Jonathan R. Lawrence
Download or read book Laser Surface Engineering written by Jonathan R. Lawrence and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers can alter the surface composition and properties of materials in a highly controllable way, which makes them efficient and cost-effective tools for surface engineering. This book provides an overview of the different techniques, the laser-material interactions and the advantages and disadvantages for different applications. Part one looks at laser heat treatment, part two covers laser additive manufacturing such as laser-enhanced electroplating, and part three discusses laser micromachining, structuring and surface modification. Chemical and biological applications of laser surface engineering are explored in part four, including ways to improve the surface corrosion properties of metals. - Provides an overview of thermal surface treatments using lasers, including the treatment of steels, light metal alloys, polycrystalline silicon and technical ceramics - Addresses the development of new metallic materials, innovations in laser cladding and direct metal deposition, and the fabrication of tuneable micro- and nano-scale surface structures - Chapters also cover laser structuring, surface modification, and the chemical and biological applications of laser surface engineering

Book Synopsis Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures by : M. Nastasi
Download or read book Mechanical Properties and Deformation Behavior of Materials Having Ultra-Fine Microstructures written by M. Nastasi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to meet the demand for new ultra-high strength materials, the processing of novel material configurations with unique microstructure is being explored in systems which are further and further from equilibrium. One such class of emerging materials is the so-called nanophased or nanostructured materials. This class of materials includes metals and alloys, ceramics, and polymers characterized by controlled ultra-fine microstructural features in the form oflayered, fibrous, or phase and grain distribution. While it is clear that these materials are in an early stage of development, there is now a sufficient body of literature to fuel discussion of how the mechanical properties and deformation behavior can be controlled through control of the microstructure. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in the field of mechanical properties and deformation behavior in materials with ultra fine microstructure, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential for technological applications. The Institute was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Included in these discussions were the topics of superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Lectures were also presented which covered a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties.
