Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Problems The recent triumph of the Liberal or Popular Party in Mexico, after almost 4 years of struggle, presents a unique opportunity for the carrying of certain economic changes which will destroy forever the dangerous political power of those egotistical groups composed of big landowners, who up to now have maintained the working classes in a state of slavery and ignorance. It is only recently that the conspiracy of si lence in regard to the monopoly of the land, - the censurable policy of Porfirio Diaz and; of Huerta - was broken; and as there are still many educated people in the Mexican Federation who are not acquainted with the facts in the case, 1 shall dedicate this chapter to the his tory of the land. When the smoke shall have cleared away, there will be a new day for the whole world, and a new meaning to Christian brotherhood, as there will be a brotherhood of nations for the first time in human history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Near Side of the Mexican Question There are two sides to nearly every matter and the ever-present Mexican question offers no exception to this general rule. The side of this question of which we hear least is that lying north of the international line, yet this aspect of the situation is of Vital concern to every citizen in the United States. The future of our country is unalterably and inextricably bound up with the future of Mexico and the Mexicans. Every passing year but adds emphasis to this fact. The multitude of Mexicans, who have found refuge within our borders during the last decade, added to the not inconsiderable spanish-american element resident for a much longer period here, forms a group which has become well-nigh indispensable to our national life and one with which we must reckon in the days to come. It is to help the reader understand something of the intimacy of our relationship to Mexico and the large contribution which Mexicans and spanish-americans are already making to our national life that this book is written. If it helps at all toward a sympathetic ap proach to the common problems which Mexicans and Americans must work out side by side in the days ahead, it will have accomplished its purpose. Of all literature, that is the most useful which is the result of sympathetic and close personal relations. The writer has had the privi lege of travelling a little in Mexico with Dr. Case, particularly in those regions ofgiihughua which were most recently his home, and can give personal testi mony to the intimate friendship existing between Dr. Case and the Mexican people, and to the heroism with which he went on about his accustomed life in Mexico during years when the northern states were overrun with disorganized bands of soldiers and outlaws and life there was full of danger. His book presents a series of views of Mexican life, the veracity of which is apparent to any one who has visited Mexico, and his conclusions with respect to the Mexican people and their future are the thoughts of a man of close powers of observation, sympathetic insight, and long experi ence in analyzing the characters of men of another race and heritage from ourselves. They have faced these issues alone or with others through politics, security (the military, police, or even public health squads), religion, family, and popular groups. This unique reader collects documents—texts, visuals, videos, and sounds—from organizational reports, popular expressions, and ephemeral creations to express these concerns, reveal responses, and measure successes. They allow readers to consider and discuss how these documents enabled Mexicans to evaluate their history and culture from 1810 to the present. Offering a wide variety of materials that can be tailored to the needs of individual instructors, these rich sources will stimulate critical thinking and give students new insights and often surprising respect and understanding for the ways Mexicans have managed to find humor, even magic, in their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico and Its Reconstruction No state in our day lives unto itself alone. It must be in touch with the outside world and especially with the nations upon which it borders. It is for this reason that the relations of the United States to Mexico have become so important and are sure in the future to be of even greater moment. What affects one cannot fail to affect the other. Already the more obvious of international relationships between the two are em phasized in an unusual degree. American investments in Mex ico far exceed those of any other foreign country. The for eign trade of Mexico with the United States is more important for Mexico than that with all the rest of the world combined, a condition which the developments during the World War have accentuated. The foreign relations of the two countries have an intimate connection - neither can feel itself safe without the friendship of the other. Failure to realize their political unity of interest might endanger the foreign policy which the United States has for a century defended, to assure the free develop ment of all the American republics. N 0 single volume can glve a detailed picture of such complex elements as those cited in the preceding paragraphs. It may, however, help to indicate the various factors that must be taken into consideration by the individual and by the state of which he forms a part in arriving at a judgment of what may fairly be expected of a government working under such conditions as will confront Mexico during its trying period of reconstruction. It is hoped that this book may assist its readers in forming such a judgment and may stimulate them to further study of the problems which it outlines. How important an intelligent understanding of these problems is for both Mexico and the United States is realized by only a small portion of the peoples of the two republics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican People: Their Struggle for Freedom This book is deliberately given the title of "The Mexican People: Their Struggle for Freedom." We know that to the average mind Mexico and freedom seem almost antithetical terms; that is why we wrote this book. The Mexican people have democratic traditions as grand, pure, and sane as those of any race in the world. Like all peoples, they have suffered bitter oppression at the hands of their own master class, but unlike the majority of peoples their weakness has made of them the peculiar prey of the foreign exploiter as well. For a hundred years they have maintained the bloodiest, most heroically abandoned fight for their liberties, not only against their own master class but against that master class leagued with Spain, with the United States, with France, and with England. We have long wished to tell of this struggle. It constitutes one of the most exalted dramas of the social process. If by this book, wrought out amidst many difficulties, we shall awaken the spirit of brotherhood and understanding in the hearts of some, for the battling proletariat of Mexico, our work will not have been without reward. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico's Dilemma Mexico's Dilemma has three horns. They are: 1. Financial ruin of Mexico and internal disorders unless a loan is obtained. 2. The possibility of subjugation to German influence with all of its liability for external strife. 3. Co-operation with the United States, England, France and America. What will Mexico do? The answer is one which future events will determine. In this book the author has tried to tell what forces and influences are sharpening each of the three horns. There are bandits, disloyal Mexicans, ambitious officials, patriotic citizens, honest business men, Teutonic intriguers, spies, propagandists, diplomats, millionaires, army officers and I. W. W. firebrands at work. Is it any wonder, then, that Mexico finds herself in such a Dilemma? Mexico has always been a home and workshop for foreigners. Several thousand years ago the Chinese settled in that country and, judging from the relics which are found to-day, in and about Mexico City, Chinese civilisation flourished there for a few hundred years. Therefore men who might serve God and man become cowards in advance and fear to do the thing which high heaven and the world would extol. Even now, men say to me: "Don't try to reveal the facts relating to Mexico, for if it be necessary to involve political potentialities, you may get into trouble." So timid souls seek to warn me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whole Truth About Mexico: President Wilson's Responsibility Passion is the mainspring of every drama; and every great, international political problem sets the passion of patriotism in motion, as well as the passion to secure well being in the future at the expense of the present. Socialism in its practical application is a compelling force, destructive of traditional civilization, especially when it champions the cause of the poor in their struggle against the rich.
