Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Grade and Teach a Country School The question, "What can be done to improve the condition of the country school, has been ably discussed from the platform of our educational gatherings for many years; school journals have devoted pages to this important question, teachers have labored from the first to improve the system of instruction as found in these schools of the people; legislation has been invoked in innumerable instances to satisfy the demands of a practical constituency; superintendents, of both county and state, have recommended plans for the solution of the problem; and National Bureaus of Education have issued circulars attempting to solve it. For a time these discussions and suggestions recommended special helps and aids; they were all good so far as they proposed to improve the rural schools, and aided very materially in giving teachers better methods of classification, and instruction; thus was the question answered in part; many of the country schools were improved by these discussions, but not all of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching the Common Branches: A Textbook for Teachers of Rural and Graded Schools This book represents an attempt to Write a simple text on the theory of teaching for students of teaching and for inexperienced teachers, particularly in the rural schools. Most of the Would-be teachers Who take an elementary course in methods of teaching are destined to begin in country schools. But most of the methods found in books on teaching have been Worked out for graded schools, Where there is more time, and Where there are, on the Whole, better teachers. The author has faced this problem by Writing the present text primarily for rural teachers. The most practical assistance to him in the task has been several years' experience of his own as a country school teacher, several years more spent in training country teachers in a County Model School, and, very recently, some experience in teaching peda gogy to a group of young students in the University, High School. This equipment has been supplemented by an examination of all the books used in the high school normal training classes Of those states that have them, and by submitting the manuscript to certain experts who know country schools and the capacities of their teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management Besides school management, the rural teacher needs to know better methods, especially in primary subjects. Realizing this deficiency, a few chapters in primary methods, by Miss Stone, have been added, which are adapted to the work of country schools. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. This may be the need for the country school. If so, some one better fitted must undertake the task of its preparation. This little volume is not even a book on agriculture. It may be fairly questioned whether or not the country school teacher needs something else before a text-book on the science and practice of farming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Teaching in Rural Schools IF our American public school system is to provide adequately for the education of all boys and girls, the rural schools of the United States must be improved. It is important in the consideration of this problem that we discuss methods of finance and of administration. It is even more important that well-trained teachers be placed in every classroom, and that those already at work in rural schools grow increasingly more efficient. In this volume the author has presented to rural school teachers a record of achievement by a group of rural school-teachers which is not only enlightening but in spiring. The book could not have been written by one who approached the problem as a theorist. It is out of a rich experience in achieving the ideals set forth, that Dr. Pittman has written to the rural school-teachers of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods in Teaching: Being the Stockton Methods in Elementary Schools Among the exhibits at the St. Louis and Portland Expositions was one from the Stockton Schools. It was so arranged as to show in the smallest possible compass as complete a picture of the development of the course of study as could be presented in written form. The work in all bound volumes was shown in the following sequence: 1. A typewritten monograph, or method sheet, treating of the subject illustrated in the volume. 2. The course of study in the subject in printed form. 3. The teacher's daily program. 4. Work from the pupils, showing all the written lessons given in the subject from the first lesson in September to the last lesson in June. Under this arrangement the methods followed, the course of study to be carried out, the time value of every subject, the results secured, were shown in every volume. There were ninety-two monographs, or method sheets, illustrating fully the methods followed in the different subjects taught. In all cases these monographs were written by the principals or teachers. These volumes of method sheets, illustrated as they were with the results secured from pupils, met with a generous commendation from the teachers of America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management and Methods for Rural and Village Teachers Teachers in rural and village schools have problems of their own. They often have all grades to teach, and many times have a crowded room with few facilities for teaching. Most books on School Management and on Methods of Teaching have been written from the view point of the model school or the city system, and contain much that is impractical in the rural or the village school where ideal conditions do not exist. Management and Methods was written to help rural and village teachers. It embraces nine years' experience in these schools, corrected and modified by several years of deeper study and broader experience. It will, we believe, be found at all times pleading for good common sense in the school room, and for work and study and planning on the part of the teacher. The suggestions will be found helpful, we trust, to teachers, both old and young; and if they are, the author will be satisfied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Education Method and Other Papers on Education The publication, in a collected form, of the papers included in this volume may not be without value at the present critical juncture of educational affairs when so many serious attempts are being made to bring our school system into harmony with the times and'to improve the methods of teaching. The earlier articles are didactic: in these I have sought to give reasons for the introduction of scientific method into all schools. The later articles are con structive: they contain the suggestions which, from time to time, I have ventured to make for the improve ment of the methods of teaching elementary physical science. Whilst the former may be of interest to the general reader, the latter will appeal more to the specialist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1000 Ways of 1000 Teachers: Being a Compilation of Methods of Instruction and Discipline Practiced by Prominent Public School Teachers of the Country This volume is not the expression of the peculiar views of one person, but rather a collection of the ways of many. The author has aimed to include in it such suggestions on school management and discipline as the teacher, occupied and perhaps worried with the every-day duties of the schoolroom, would not think of; such a variety of exercises as will renew the interest of pupils in their school work, and such methods of instruction as will give a restful change to both teacher and pupils in class recitations. It is therefore not intended for consecutive reading. The ideas contained therein have been gathered from experience, reading, and an extensive correspondence with those who are acknowledged now to be successful workers in the schoolroom. The author does not claim that these methods and maxims are the only perfect ones. To set up such a claim would be absurd. The book is not designed for instructors in the high-school studies, but for the great number of teachers of the common English branches who have a desire for the right accomplishment of their work, and are willing to profit by the experience of others. In short, the book is a volume of experiences, and suggestions gleaned from experience. If it meets the approbation of the working teacher, the credit will be due more to those whose ideas are embodied in it than to him who collected and compiled them.
