Book excerpt: The only way to cultivate a taste for good reading is to read--and to enjoy while reading. It is upon this principle that the present texts are based. It provides pupils with a wide variety of literature, of many types, chosen primarily from library records, lists made by children, and teachers observations. The editors guiding question has been, "Does this passage provide a clear window through which boys and girls can look out upon an interesting phase of life?" The stories and poems in each volume are followed by a study section with exercises for vocabulary, comprehension, oral reading proficiency, or essays. These tasks increase in difficulty as the pupil ascends through the levels, and are given as the minimum essentials for pupil guidance. Teachers are free to adapt as necessary to meet the needs of their pupils.

Book Synopsis The Refugee-Diplomat by : Diego Pirillo
Download or read book The Refugee-Diplomat written by Diego Pirillo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of permanent embassies in fifteenth-century Italy has traditionally been regarded as the moment of transition between medieval and modern diplomacy. In The Refugee-Diplomat, Diego Pirillo offers an alternative history of early modern diplomacy, centered not on states and their official representatives but around the figure of "the refugee-diplomat" and, more specifically, Italian religious dissidents who forged ties with English and northern European Protestants in the hope of inspiring an Italian Reformation. Pirillo reconsiders how diplomacy worked, not only within but also outside of formal state channels, through underground networks of individuals who were able to move across confessional and linguistic borders, often adapting their own identities to the changing political conditions they encountered. Through a trove of diplomatic and mercantile letters, inquisitorial records, literary texts, marginalia, and visual material, The Refugee-Diplomat recovers the agency of religious refugees in international affairs, revealing their profound impact on the emergence of early modern diplomatic culture and practice.
Book Synopsis Representing Imperial Rivalry in the Early Modern Mediterranean by : Barbara Fuchs
Download or read book Representing Imperial Rivalry in the Early Modern Mediterranean written by Barbara Fuchs and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing Imperial Rivalry in the Early Modern Mediterranean explores representations of national, racial, and religious identities within a region dominated by the clash of empires. Bringing together studies of English, Spanish, Italian, and Ottoman literature and cultural artifacts, the volume moves from the broadest issues of representation in the Mediterranean to a case study early modern England where the Mediterranean turn has radically changed the field. The essays in this wide-ranging literary and cultural study examine the rhetoric which surrounds imperial competition in this era, ranging from poems commemorating the battle of Lepanto to elaborately adorned maps of contested frontiers. They will be of interest to scholars in fields such as history, comparative literary studies, and religious studies.
Book Synopsis International Relations, Music and Diplomacy by : Frédéric Ramel
Download or read book International Relations, Music and Diplomacy written by Frédéric Ramel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the interrelation of international relations, music, and diplomacy from a multidisciplinary perspective. Throughout history, diplomats have gathered for musical events, and musicians have served as national representatives. Whatever political unit is under consideration (city-states, empires, nation-states), music has proven to be a component of diplomacy, its ceremonies, and its strategies. Following the recent acoustic turn in IR theory, the authors explore the notion of “musical diplomacies” and ask whether and how it differs from other types of cultural diplomacy. Accordingly, sounds and voices are dealt with in acoustic terms but are not restricted to music per se, also taking into consideration the voices (speech) of musicians in the international arena.
