Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Angels Memorial Guide is a book of healing. It approaches healing, beginning from the loss of a loved one and then gradually exploring the many paths leading to the departed soul. If you read, meditate, and pray after reading each of the selections, you may discover a link to the beyond. The book shares with the reader how he or she can participate in bringing healing to themselves. By example, it explores the love between a father and a son who tragically died at the age of twenty-three years old. Father and son recognize each other in spiritual contexts and attempt to bridge the gap of mutual love and love of humanity. It presents a chain of thought of how in healing oneself one can add to the beauty of our world and the happiness of others. From a Reader: Wow, I can only read a few pages at a time because its so deep and the need to ponder/meditate takes more than a moment. The messages are beautiful and easy to comprehend. I read the Father poem on Sunday, and that night, my deceased father came to visit me in a dream. Awesome!

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK Named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, O, the Oprah Magazine, Esquire, Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, Good Housekeeping, Refinery29, Real Simple, Kirkus Reviews, Electric Literature, and Lit Hub “A masterpiece.” —NPR “No other novel this year captures so gracefully the full palette of America.” —The Washington Post “Wryly funny, gently devastating.” —Entertainment Weekly A funny and profound story about family in all its strange forms, joyful and hard-won vulnerability, becoming who you're supposed to be, and the limits of love. Benson and Mike are two young guys who live together in Houston. Mike is a Japanese American chef at a Mexican restaurant and Benson's a Black day care teacher, and they've been together for a few years—good years—but now they're not sure why they're still a couple. There's the sex, sure, and the meals Mike cooks for Benson, and, well, they love each other. But when Mike finds out his estranged father is dying in Osaka just as his acerbic Japanese mother, Mitsuko, arrives in Texas for a visit, Mike picks up and flies across the world to say goodbye. In Japan he undergoes an extraordinary transformation, discovering the truth about his family and his past. Back home, Mitsuko and Benson are stuck living together as unconventional roommates, an absurd domestic situation that ends up meaning more to each of them than they ever could have predicted. Without Mike's immediate pull, Benson begins to push outwards, realizing he might just know what he wants out of life and have the goods to get it. Both men will change in ways that will either make them stronger together, or fracture everything they've ever known. And just maybe they'll all be okay in the end.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The award-winning book that inspired an Apple Original series from Apple TV+ • A landmark investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital ravaged by Hurricane Katrina—and the suspenseful portrayal of the quest for truth and justice—from a Pulitzer Prize–winning physician and reporter “An amazing tale, as inexorable as a Greek tragedy and as gripping as a whodunit.”—Dallas Morning News After Hurricane Katrina struck and power failed, amid rising floodwaters and heat, exhausted staff at Memorial Medical Center designated certain patients last for rescue. Months later, a doctor and two nurses were arrested and accused of injecting some of those patients with life-ending drugs. Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting by Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink, unspools the mystery, bringing us inside a hospital fighting for its life and into the most charged questions in health care: which patients should be prioritized, and can health care professionals ever be excused for hastening death? Transforming our understanding of human nature in crisis, Five Days at Memorial exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life care and reveals how ill-prepared we are for large-scale disasters—and how we can do better. Anthony Lukas Book Prize, PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award, Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Ridenhour Book Prize, American Medical Writers Association Medical Book Award, National Association of Science Writers Science in Society Award

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11, this book emphasizes the highlights of the museum’s interpretation of this somber day. This book is the definitive, official companion volume to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. It provides visitors with a lasting record of their experience at the museum, and tells the story of September 11 through essays on and photographs of the installations and thoughtfully curated artifacts that serve as touchstones to the day and its aftermath. It also provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse—through photographs and planning concepts—into the evolution of the museum from idea to finished entity. By maximizing the visual impact through the innovative use of photography and design, the book immerses the reader in the visceral emotion of both the museum and the day—September 11—itself. No Day Shall Erase You offers an authoritative narrative of 9/11, as it is presented in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and as told by Alice M. Greenwald, the museum’s director, and other key staff who planned and built the museum. Focusing on the historic impact of the event, No Day Shall Erase You recognizes the central importance 9/11 has in America’s national memory, as well as putting the day into context fifteen years later.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twelve original essays by geographers and anthropologists offer a deep critical understanding of Allan Pred’s pathbreaking and eclectic cultural Marxist approach, with a focus on his concept of “situated ignorance”: the production and reproduction of power and inequality by regimes of truth through strategically deployed misinformation, diversions, and silences. As the essays expose the cultural and material circumstances in which situated ignorance persists, they also add a previously underexplored spatial dimension to Walter Benjamin’s idea of “moments of danger.” The volume invokes the aftermath of the July 2011 attacks by far-right activist Anders Breivik in Norway, who ambushed a Labor Party youth gathering and bombed a government building, killing and injuring many. Breivik had publicly and forthrightly declared war against an array of liberal attitudes he saw threatening Western civilization. However, as politicians and journalists interpreted these events for mass consumption, a narrative quickly emerged that painted Breivik as a lone madman and steered the discourse away from analysis of the resurgent right-wing racisms and nationalisms in which he was immersed. The Breivik case is merely one of the most visible recent examples, say editors Heather Merrill and Lisa Hoffman, of the unchallenged production of knowledge in the public sphere. In essays that range widely in topic and setting—for example, brownfield development in China, a Holocaust memorial in Germany, an art gallery exhibit in South Africa—this volume peels back layers of “situated practices and their associated meaning and power relations.” Spaces of Danger offers analytical and conceptual tools of a Predian approach to interrogate the taken-for-granted and make visible and legible that which is silenced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, contributors reflect on how to teach and mediate difficult history from the perspectives of guides. Too often, their activities are undervalued and taken for granted. Guides represent an important, often forgotten group of educators. This volume takes a global view on guiding at memorial sites and museums in Europe, North America, and South Africa. The contributors to this volume show from different research traditions that it is worth understanding more about the guides’ personal interests, their motivations, and their concept of guiding. Authors apply methodologies from the social sciences to describe the guides’ point of view. Complementing the various approaches in tour guide research, a detailed linguistic analysis sheds light on a survivor’s testimony echoed in the guides’ language. The studies gathered in this volume open up an orientation for further approaches to tour guiding based on and centered around “authentic” materials from guides.
