Nathaniel Greene: Major General in the Army of the United States, and Commander of the Southern Department, in the War of the Revolution Under these circumstances, if the enraptured' poet refused or neglected to celebrate them in verse, the sober historian supplied his place, while the painter or the statuary willingly aided, in recalling their images, and perpetuating their fame. To render the tribute the more complete, the labours of the four were oftentimes united. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Civil War Between the Northern and Southern Sections of the United States of America, 1861 to 1865 The intention of these memoirs is to fur nish my children and their descendants, in printed form, an account of the experience of the writer during the War waged from 1861 to 1865 by the Northern States of the Union against the Government set up by the South ern States, 'in order to force the latter to re turn to the Union. During its existence, the group of Southern States took the name of the Confederate States of America. My Great Grandfather was a Lieutenant serving with the Barrons in the Navy of the Colony of Virginia during the Revolutionary War of 1776 and his son, my paternal Grandfather, served with the Militia in the war with Eng land in 1812, both were named George Cham berlaine. Having often wished they had left an account of their experiences in the Serv ice, I determined that lif my descendants had a desire to know something of my Experience in the War of 1861 to 1865, they would have it in permanent form. I have now reached a ripe old age, but my memory of the events related is clear, and I have a few cotem poraries left, who served in the same Army and perhaps some of them may take an inter est in reading this account of scenes familiar to themselves. If they find the personal pro noun used very often, they should remember that this is a statement of my personal recol lections and excuse its frequent use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States, for Schools and Academies This work is designed as an introductory history. The plan of alternate questions and answers has been adopted, because considered the best arrangement for those pupils who are not sufficiently advanced to judge for themselves in all instances as to what is the correct answer to a question placed at the foot of the page. I have myself often felt the need of a work of this kind in my own school, and it is this need which has prompted me to prepare this history. Great pains have been taken to state accurately all the leading events in the history of our country. The authorities consulted in the preparation of this work are Stephens's History of the United Stat-es, Memoirs of the War in the Southern Department of the United States, by General Henry Lee, Holmes's History of the United States, John Esten Cooke's Life of R. E. Lee, mccabe's Life of Lee, General Joseph E. Johnston's Narrative of Military Greeley's American Conflict, Draper's History of the Civil War, and Swinton's Decisive Battles of the War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America Immediately after the surrender of the Confederate armies engaged in the war between the States, General Lee undertook to write of the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia while under his command, and asked such assistance as I could give in supplying reports, despatches, and letters of his, the originals of which had been lost or destroyed. Under the impression that they could not be put to better use, such as were in hand were packed and sent. He gave up the work, and after a few years his death made it impossible that the world should receive the story of the Confederate campaigns in Virginia from the noble mind that controlled them. Possibly, had I not expected our commander to write the history of those campaigns, I should have written myself a decade or so earlier than I have done. But, personally, I am not sorry that I write of the war thirty years after its close, instead of ten or twenty. While I am so constituted, temperamentally, that I could view then almost exactly as I do now the great struggle in which I bore a part, I do not know that others, in any considerable number, might have so regarded it at the earlier periods to which I refer. I believe that now, more fully than then, the public is ready to receive, in the spirit in which it is written, the story which I present. Johnston: Once the Quartermaster General of the Army of the United States, and a General in the Army of the Confederate States of America This sketch, written in a light-cavalry ga110p, does not pretend to give detail of his campaigns or his battles; it only seeks to give a general view of military operations, that can be taken in at a glance. The particular description of the movements of tr00ps, of the hour they started, of the route they took, of the minute of their arrival, is, I think, inexpressibly tedious and confusing, except to the technical and professional student. I have, therefore, only tried to present a picture, and a map, together with a photograph of the General, as we all knew him, and as we want posterity to appreciate him.
