Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Joseph Hardcastle, Esq., First Treasurer of the London Missionary Society: A Record of the Past for His Descendants In a letter of her own, addressed to one of the few friends beyond the precincts of her family whom she presented with a copy of her book, she thus tells its history in a few simple words This volume is a little enlargement of the Memoir which my dear husband prepared in 1839 for Dr. Morrison's Fathers and Founders of the London Missionary Society.' The time then allowed was too short for the family to examine all our materials, and it was therefore our intention at once to reprint With addi tions the Memoir so hastily supplied. But very speedily one of our number followed after another to join the family in heaven, and the design was never fulfilled. 'what has now been done is in tended only for my father's descendants and a few old friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Fourth Generation takes its title from a family memoir by Eva O’Malley written in 1954. In it she vividly captured the characters of earlier and contemporary members of her family, and recalled her own childhood at Denton House in Oxfordshire. Her father, Sir Edward O’Malley, who had a distinguished career as a colonial judge, had married Winifred Hardcastle, one of the four daughters of Joseph Alfred Hardcastle, a brewer and politician. The second part of For the Fourth Generation contains eight other items on family members and houses. Joseph Alfred Hardcastle MP (1815-1899), born in extraordinary circumstances, in 1840 married a brewing heiress from Writtle worth £180,000 and managed to spend almost all of it. Peter Frederic O’Malley (1804-1874), born in Mayo, was the founder of the family in England. He made a highly successful career as a barrister in East Anglia, though a less successful one as a politician. His son, Sir Edward, wrote a poignant account of his own childhood, shared with his brother George, in the 1850s; while Winifred O’Malley wrote a short biography of the most talented artist in the family, her brother-in-law St Clair. The book ends with portraits of two houses, Monkswell House, on Chelsea Embankment, the home of another of Joseph Alfred Hardcastle’s daughters, Mary, Lady Monkswell, a prolific and mordant diarist; and Denton, where Eva O’Malley and her brother, the diplomat Sir Owen O’Malley, grew up together. Both the Hardcastle and O’Malley families left extensive and revealing personal records, including letters, diaries, memoirs and photographs, published and unpublished books, houses and paintings. These allow the lives and personalities of members of both families to come to life with remarkable immediacy. All those who are descended from Joseph Alfred Hardcastle or Peter Frederic O’Malley will find this book compelling.

Book excerpt: In the wake of the navigators who finally opened up the Pacific came missionaries, traders and finally administrators. In the early decades of the 19th century Polynesia was a rich field for the curious and the calculating, for writers and adventurers. The pioneer European settlers in Eastern Polynesia were ministers and mechanics sent out on the crest of an Evangelical wave the merged with the currents and eddies of trade and whaling to break down the isolation of the islands and their inhabitants. Among the pioneers was Welshman John Davies (1772-1855) who spent just over 50 years of his life on Tahiti and neighbouring islands. He witnessed the rise of the Pomare dynasty, conversion to Christianity, reaction to attempts at theocratic government, and the gradual encroachment of alien commerce and European rule. His colleagues have made their contribution to the history and anthropology of Polynesia. Davies himself, teacher, linguist and careful observer, wrote his own story of the Mission, its personalities and their contact with the Polynesians, from the early phase of disillusionment through three decades of political and economic change, destruction and reconstruction. From this contact there emerged the uneasy compromise of missionary and indigenous beliefs and institutions that characterized Tahiti and its neighbours before and after the advent of French administration. Davies's manuscript History is here edited and annotated, supplemented by the writings of other missionaries and presented as a contribution to the literature of the Pacific. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1961.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F.D. Maurice (1805-72) was one of Victorian Britain's most controversial thinkers. Although he came from a Unitarian family and counted leading Unitarians as his friends, their influence on his work has never been seriously examined. The purpose of this new book is to look at his life and teaching in the light of Unitarianism. Maurice's faith had a distinctly Christological emphasis, but he continued to value his Unitarian heritage. His concern with the Fatherhood of God and the dignity of the human race owes much to his family background. Young's study opens with a compact history of Unitarianism during the lifetimes of Maurice and his father, a Unitarian minister. A series of biographical sketches draws on hitherto unpublished material to set Maurice's work in its historic context. Final chapters compare the central themes of his theology with the teaching of his Unitarian contemporaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the life of Robert Lyall, surgeon, botanist, voyager, British Agent to the court of Madagascar. Born the year of the French Revolution, Lyall grew up in politically radical Paisley, Scotland, before studying medicine, in Edinburgh, Manchester, and subsequently St. Petersburg, Russia. His criticism of the Tsar and Russian aristocracy led to an abrupt departure for London where Lyall became the voice of liberalism and calls for political reform, before appointed British Resident Agent in Madagascar in 1827, representing the interests of the Tory establishment that he had hitherto so roundly castigated. However, Lyall discovered that the Malagasy crown had turned against the British alliance of 1820, his scientific pursuits alienated the local elite, and his efforts to re-establish British influence antagonized the queen, Ranavalona I, who accused Lyall of sorcery and forced him and his burgeoning family to leave for Mauritius where he died an untimely death, of malaria, in 1831.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealanders know Samuel Marsden as the founder of the CMS missions that brought Christianity (and perhaps sheep) to New Zealand. Australians know him as &‘the flogging parson' who established large landholdings and was dismissed from his position as magistrate for exceeding his jurisdiction. English readers know of Marsden for his key role in the history of missions and empire. In this major biography spanning research, and the subject's life, across England, New South Wales and New Zealand, Andrew Sharp tells the story of Marsden's life from the inside. Sharp focuses on revealing to modern readers the powerful evangelical lens through which Marsden understood the world. By diving deeply into key moments &– the voyage out, the disputes with Macquarie, the founding of missions &– Sharp gets us to reimagine the world as Marsden saw it: always under threat from the Prince of Darkness, in need of &‘a bold reprover of vice', a world written in the words of the King James Bible. Andrew Sharp takes us back into the nineteenth-century world, and an evangelical mind, to reveal the past as truly a foreign country.
